Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site Fort Union Trading Post was built near the confl uence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers in 1828 by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company, and until 1867, it dominated the fur trade on the upper Missouri River. It was the headquarters for trading with the Assiniboine, Cree, Crow, Blackfeet, Ojibwa, Hidatsa, Mandan and Arikara Indians.
