15 – 19 July 2011 Souvenir Programme The Tall Ships Races 2011 CRUISE IN COMPANY ORKNEY Four Days of Action-Packed Activities & Events Details of events available in local press 7 July and at: www.orkneyharbours.com www.tallshipsraceslerwick.com Welcome to The Tall Ships Races 2011 Cruise in Company Orkney This Souvenir Programme is the culmination of many months of planning to welcome the majestic Tall Ships to Orkney. When Orkney was first selected as a guest port for The Tall Ships Races 2011, it became immediately apparent that there was a high level of interest in the event from both people living in Orkney and tourists alike. The Tall Ships Races are rightly regarded as one of the most sought after events in the global maritime calendar. It is a great accolade for Orkney to have not just one but two ‘Cruise in Company’ ports – Kirkwall and Stromness - taking part, and I am delighted to welcome participants and visitors to this great event. Since we began looking at bringing the Tall Ships to Orkney, the event has grown more than we could have possibly imagined. The number of ships calling in has increased from six to 19, the number of Orkney sail trainees from 10 to 30, and nearly 1000 people have expressed an interest in taking part in a day sailing challenge on July 16 from Kirkwall to Stromness. In addition, there are many more on board events available for the public to participate in. This programme is tailored to provide something for everyone, whether on board a Tall Ship or on the quayside.

I declare that this submission is my own work and has not been submitted for any other academic award. Andrew Ross The Innovation School, The Glasgow School of Art January 2021 2 Acknowledgements It was with trepidation that I embarked on this Master’s Degree with Glasgow School of Art in 2019. It is with no little sense of accomplishment and pride that the research has been finished in this, its eVentful second year. Through it I haVe learned much. The project has been a life-saving task at a time of upheaVal and chaos in a pandemic-hit world, offering discovery, peace, routine and serenity when it was needed. For that I am grateful, as I am to many people, some of whom are no longer with us. All are remembered in this work. Thank you to Glasgow School of Art for leadership and clarity, adapting so quickly to changed circumstances and keeping the research on track. I would like especially to thank Dr Marianne McAra and Dr Cara Broadley for thoughtful organisation and support throughout. Thank you to CreatiVe Futures Partnership (Glasgow School of Art and HIE) for covering the fees for this project.
