That would lower the cost from $108 to $72 for each permit. James Evans, director of natu- ral resources, says this is an effort to improve compliance with the city’s man- grove trimming and preservation program to encourage more property owners to obtain permits or exemption letters prior to trimming. Also, it better reflects staff time needed to process mangrove trim- ming permits. “The permitting process provides staff an opportunity to meet with property owners and/or contractors prior to trim- ming to educate them on the (program) and to discuss proper trimming tech- niques and the value of mangroves to Sanibel’s ecology,” said Evans. The public hearing is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2.

Pizza was provided by the school, chicken fingers were provided by the Lazy Flamingo and several parents and the three-year-old class made brownies. The grandparents were presented with cards made by the preschoolers with their hand print on the outside and a poem about grandparents on the inside. National Grandparents Day was proclaimed a national holiday in 1978. Congress passed legislation that year stating the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day and then President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. The statute cites the day’s pur- pose as “...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.” The Children’s Education Center of the Islands strives to include Nina and Steve Kotel Pete Leonardi and Cristian Batke continued on page 20 OPE We have the NFL Ticket Package GRAND NING & the BIG TEN Network

But that wasn’t all George got me involved with concerning gators. Meet The Author! In 1977, there was still very little real knowledge about the maternal behav- ior of crocodilians. It had always been assumed that these reptilian creatures behaved in a similar fashion to most reptiles and laid their eggs in a nest and walked away to let the young fend for themselves. But a fascinating discovery had only recently been made about croc- odiles in Africa when it was discovered that after the eggs were laid, the female guarded the nest throughout incubation and, eventually, helped the young hatch, carried the babies down to the water and protected the newborn crocs from preda- tors. Well, George Weymouth and George Campbell (another well-known naturalist on Sanibel) wanted to find out if the same was true about our very own American alligator. Of course, the two George’s knew where there were a few gator nests on the island and they put together a plan to document what happened at hatching time. Their proposal was to build a blind close to an alligator nest, schedule vol- unteers to sit in the blind mostly at night (because it was expected that the young would hatch out under the cover of dark- ness), and capture the mother’s behavior on camera utilizing night-vision lenses. Night-vision capability was a relatively new technology and not readily available to the general public at the time. But Mike Klein, a recent resident and future Fish Tacos! Mayor of Sanibel, had helped the military in developing this technology for their purposes and loaned George Campbell one of his personal lenses for this project. Needless to say, I became one of the volunteers and was scheduled to sit in Rated by:
