Looking for a holistic understanding of the urban environment and its complex and multi-layered interaction with people, I am currently completing my Master’s degree at Copenhagen University MR XLI ½IPH SJ 0ERHWGETI %VGLMXIGXYVI and Urban Design. Through a realization that people are the key in developing regenerative neighbourhoods, I am now venturing into co-creative urbanism.’’

The Story of Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems explores co-creative urbanism Sandra B. Helgason Alexandra Chairetaki through the process analysis of a temporary intervention, Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems, that took place on Kong Georgs Vej and on Friday the 31st of May 2013 and was realised together with local citizens, Frederiksberg Experience (the union of Frederiksberg’s local businesses), different departments of the Municipality of Frederiksberg and the student association, Creative Roots. The intervention had multi-layered purposes: to create synergies between the existing networks, to reveal the qualities of the neighbourhood, its residents and activities, and to engage the locals into a meaningful transformation of their neighbourhood. Before becoming the initiator and coordinator of Frederikbserg’s Hidden Gems, I founded the association Creative Roots in August 2012. After building up the association network through other projects, I used it as a tool to navigate between Lucia De Luca The Co|Urbanists the different stakeholders in order to create the necessary synergies that brought this thesis project to life.

This book offers an overview of the background setting, the realization process, the local people, their activities and networks. I relate here details on the co-creative process, its successes and failures, its synchronicities and challenges, while drawing out local knowledge of the area’s social networks and activities, practical learning on civic engagement tools and recommendations for co-creation applied to starting a local urban renewal program. The Supervisors Trine Agervig Carstensen 45 ECTS MSc Thesis The Story of Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems reports my individual thesis project, Student Anaïs Lora - pfh904 which takes its roots in a thesis group work of preliminary analysis that is presented in the book Common Ground, realized by the four ‘Co|Urbanists’. 3 SPECIFYING Specifying how I could contribute the best to the urban renewal have A PERSONAL been a long process. I had been splitting my resources between Creative CONTRIBUTION Roots, where I was exploring co-creation through practice and the thesis project, where I was developing a theoritical background, until a day in 1EVGL8LEXHE]XLIX[STVSNIGXW½REPP]QIXHYVMRKE[EPOMRXLI Creative Villa Environment, and it became clear that I would participate in the urban renewal by revealing some existing potentials of the area, fostering social connections and creating useful synergies for the coming urban renewal through a co-creative urban intervention, putting into play the network and opportunities I had built up with Creative Roots. Considering the two strategical points of civic engagement and temporary use, the relatively short timeframe of the thesis project and its location MRXMQIFIJSVIXLISJ½GMEPFIKMRRMRKSJOmerådefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret(5), it seemed as if the best way to contribute to the toolbox for co-creation in the Nordre Fasanvej area was to explore how temporary use could be developed as a method for co-creation.

CREATIVE VILLA ENVIRONMENT AN INTERESTING The Creative Villa Environement standed out as an interesting starting STARTING POINT point for a project on social connections and existing potentials. Indeed, the welcoming atmosphere of the streets and the complex environement offered by the mixed-used atypical urban fabric captured my attention as a place where a neighborhood spirit could easily grow.

A MEANGINGFUL The area is located in the South part of Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret, between LOCATION /VSRTVMRWIWWI7S½IW:INERH4VMRW'SRWXERXMRW:INERHEPSRK/SRK+ISVKW Vej, Dronning Olgas Vej(10). It is also in direct vicinity with the social housing, Stjernen, and therefore offers the possibility to create new connections (10) Focus Site Location through a common intervention along Kong Georgs Vej and Dronning The Creative Villa Environment is located Olgas Vej and as a long-term perspective to forster exchange between in the South part of Nordre Fasanvej /ZEVXIVIX FIX[IIR /VSRTVMRWIWWI 7S½IW the two areas. A BONDING During my exploration of the neighbourhood, I enjoyed the inspiring HISTORY street names full of kings, queens, princes and princesses and their names did inspire later on the title of the intervention. But there was more behind the names that I could expected. There was a common history, a story learned from Jens Degerbøl, an enthusiast local resident of the Smedekollektivet on Kong Georgs Vej 10 during a walk we took on the afternoon of April the 4th. Here follows an short extract of the story adapted from Jens’ talk.

HIDDEN TREASURES What seems to be a quiet dwelling neighbourhood is in reality a complex- mixed-used urban fabric(13), which consists in front villas, mainly dwellings, with industrial buildings in their backyards, which hosts services and industries(14).

When you walk in the street you can see a collection of signs, that invites you to take a look in the backyards. If you are lucky enough, you are there welcome to by passionate people, residents or workers that are happy to show you what they do from teaching to building, from painting to sewing. All this rich creativity is like hidden treasures you do not expect to meet when wandering in a villa environment. 1 Creative Media 2 Body & Spirit 3 Enthusiast Collective The villas varies in architectural styles, size of front garden and back gardens. Some are twin houses. Most of the villas are splited into smaller dwelling units. However, not all of them are dwellings. Six villas are institutions: either schools (VIKASKU and FDKC) or daycare. The backyards hide an unexpexted range of activities from creative industries to service buisinesses. There are services such as lawyers, doctors, electricians, plumbers as well as acupunture, and yoga centre. There is also creative industries, including creative media, architects, costume makers, wood furniture designers and builders and comic drawers.

ENTHUSIASTS AT Who could have predicted that a random encounter of Henning, a resident SMEDEKOLLEKTIVET from the Smedekollectivet, would provide me some of the core actors of the co-design process. PLANTING A SEED At the community event organised by the Områdefornylse, I had the chance to ‘‘plant a seed’’, without knowing it at the time. I asked the Mayor about his opinion of the concept of Open Streets. PERSONAL vs. LOCAL Among the 11 activities of Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems, I initiated and INVESTMENT realised mainly myself 2 of them (portrait gallery, ourdoor games), I initiated and co-realised another two (the walks). Four activities were initiated and realised (open house, summerfest planning meeting...) by locals and 2 were following my suggestions, but realised by enthusiastic locals (yoga classes and the music from Stjernekoret). Most of the spontaneous surprises came out of the activities initiated and realised by the locals, maybe due to a stronger feeling of ownship and investment in the activity. The locals that offered an activity were already in touch with me in April. May, that- MWXSWE]XLIQSRXLSJXLIIZIRX[EWHI½RMXIP]XSSPEXIXSXV]XSIRKEKI more people unless they already know someone who is involve (Bente).

With a longer timeframe, it seems possible to get the street full of activities, while keeping mainly the role of a facilitator of the projects of the local community and not realisator/main host of the activities.

This exceptional practical experience offered me the possibility to challenge myself every day and do things I would not have imagined to do. There are several elements of the When I strated my project, I wanted to connect people together CONNECT BOND design that I initiated myself. For example, the open street was my input through action, through a temporary intervention. However, as a because I saw the opportunity to actually enlarge the perspective, bring result, it is not only connections between locals, between locals and attention to the area and create more networks.
