William Lee Miller, a historian and ethicist whose work examined the rocky landscape where religion, morality and American political leadership meet, died on May 27 in Manhattan. He was 86 and lived in Brooklyn. The cause was congestive heart failure, his wife, Linda, said. Professor Miller, who had taught for many years at the University of Virginia, was known in particular for his books, written for a general readership, about the roiling national debate over slavery. “Lincoln’s Virtues,” perhaps Professor Miller’s best-known book, traces the roots of its subject’s storied moral character. Those roots, Professor Miller argued, were evident early on: as a youth, Lincoln eschewed many of the rituals of frontier manhood, including drinking, gambling, smoking, hunting and swearing. A brilliant autodidact — he had little formal education — Lincoln augmented his innate moral code through vast book learning, as Professor Miller showed through a painstaking analysis of Lincoln’s better- and lesser-known writings. The volume, which follows Lincoln through law practice, his single term as an Illinois congressman and his growing acumen as a politician of national stature, ends in 1861 as he assumes the presidency. (In Professor Miller’s sequel, “President Lincoln,” he continued his examination of his subject’s moral fiber through the Civil War and Lincoln’s assassination.) Reviewing “Lincoln’s Virtues” in The Washington Post, the journalist Edwin M. Yoder Jr. called it a “marvelous ‘ethical biography,’ ” adding, “In this journey through a great and uncommonly large sensibility, we feel we are in the hands of a Virgil worthy of the trip.” In “Arguing About Slavery,” Professor Miller revisited a vitriolic though relatively little-known chapter in the national debate: the “gag rule,” which was in effect in Congress in the 1830s and ’40s. -

The term ‘Alternate History’ describes a genre of literature that presents fictional accounts of historical developments which deviate from the known course of hi story. These allohistorical narratives are inherently presentist, meaning that their central question of “What If?” can harness the repertoire of collective memory in order to act as both a reflection of and a commentary on contemporary social and political conditions. Moreover, Alternate Histories can act as a form of counter-memory insofar as the counterfactual mode can be used to highlight marginalized historical events. This study investigates a specific manifestation of this process. Contrasted with American and British examples, the primary focus is the analysis of the discursive functions of German-language counterfactual literature in the context of German normalization. The category of normalization connects a variety of commemorative trends in postwar Germany aimed at overcoming the legacy of National Socialism and re-formulating a positive German national identity. The central hypothesis is that Alternate Histories can perform a unique task in this particular discursive setting. In the context of German normalization, counterfactual stories of the history of the Third Reich are capable of functioning as alternate memories, meaning that they effectively replace the memory of real events with fantasies that are better suited to serve as exculpatory narratives for the German collective. -

Anderson This dissertation analyzes the roles of the Harry Truman administration and Congress in directing American policy regarding the Korean conflict. Using evidence from primary sources such as Truman’s presidential papers, communications of White House staffers, and correspondence from State Department operatives and key congressional figures, this study suggests that the legislative branch had an important role in Korean policy. Congress sometimes affected the war by what it did and, at other times, by what it did not do. Several themes are addressed in this project. One is how Truman and the congressional Democrats failed each other during the war. The president did not dedicate adequate attention to congressional relations early in his term, and was slow to react to charges of corruption within his administration, weakening his party politically. -

Eisenhower Statue Description Every day thousands of students walk across the Gettysburg College campus. They ra e distracted by thinking about class, or homework, or the latest happenings in their social lives. Whether or not they think about it daily the students are aware of the historical place in which they are present, the battlefields which surround the campus and the Civil War re-enactors who are reminders of the historical significance of this area. But what is much less obvious to the students is that on their walks to and from classes and to meals or to check their mail they pass what is referred to as “hidden history.” This history is hidden in plain sight, photographs or paintings, plaques, and statues, all of these objects help to tell the story of Gettysburg College. The people in the past and the events that took place on campus, have helped to shape the college of today. -

Lincoln Studies at the Bicentennial: A Round Table Lincoln Theme 2.0 Matthew Pinsker Early during the 1989 spring semester at Harvard University, members of Professor Da- vid Herbert Donald’s graduate seminar on Abraham Lincoln received diskettes that of- fered a glimpse of their future as historians. The 3.5 inch floppy disks with neatly typed labels held about a dozen word-processing files representing the whole of Don E. Feh- renbacher’s Abraham Lincoln: A Documentary Portrait through His Speeches and Writings (1964). Donald had asked his secretary, Laura Nakatsuka, to enter this well-known col- lection of Lincoln writings into a computer and make copies for his students. He also showed off a database containing thousands of digital note cards that he and his research assistants had developed in preparation for his forthcoming biography of Lincoln.1 There were certainly bigger revolutions that year. The Berlin Wall fell. A motley coalition of Afghan tribes, international jihadists, and Central Intelligence Agency (cia) operatives drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Virginia voters chose the nation’s first elected black governor, and within a few more months, the Harvard Law Review selected a popular student named Barack Obama as its first African American president. Yet Donald’s ven- ture into digital history marked a notable shift. The nearly seventy-year-old Mississippi native was about to become the first major Lincoln biographer to add full-text searching and database management to his research arsenal. More than fifty years earlier, the revisionist historian James G. Randall had posed a question that helps explain why one of his favorite graduate students would later show such a surprising interest in digital technology as an aging Harvard professor. -

"Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation. -

Baker III Institute for Public Policy Abstract: This report covers the presidential work schedules of Presidents Dwight Eisenhower through George H. W. Bush during their first 100 days in office. It reports on patterns of work carrying out presidential responsibilities and reviews a number of strategies for expanding the president’s discretion and using that discretion to affect policy. The report concludes that adopting an hierarchical White House organizational structure, one commanded by a White House Chief of Staff, improves the president’s workday, finds more opportunities for discretion, and broadens the cadre of the president’s “inner circle.” It identifies a number of opportunities for increased presidential discretion beyond controlling the numbers of ceremonial events on the president’s schedule.
