Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy Number: Original Effective Date: MM.12.013 01/01/2014 Line(s) of Business: Current Effective Date: HMO; PPO 11/17/2017 Section: Miscellaneous Place(s) of Service: Outpatient I. Description Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), also called non-traditional medicine, is a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems, practices and products that are not typically considered to be a part of traditional Western medicine (i.e., conventional medicine). This policy addresses services performed by CAM providers such as naturopaths, chiropractors and acupuncturists. Complementary medicine generally refers to using a non-traditional approach together with conventional medicine. Alternative medicine refers to using a non-traditional approach in place of conventional medicine. Various CAM assessments and therapies are supported by some degree of scientific evidence and are intended to reduce disease-based symptoms and to improve health outcomes. However, due to a lack of well-designed scientific studies and/or peer reviewed literature many CAM therapies have not been shown to improve health outcomes over conventional therapies. II. Criteria/Guidelines A CAM service or procedure is covered (subject to Limitations and Administrative Guidelines) when all of the following criteria are met: A. It meets the definition of medical necessity as specified in Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) Section 432: 1. It is for the purpose of treating a medical condition. 2. It is the most appropriate delivery or level of service, considering potential benefits and harms to the patient; 3. It is known to be effective in improving health outcomes; provided that: a. Effectiveness is determined first by scientific evidence; b.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.31989/bchd.v2i1.555 ABSTRACT Endometriosis, an inflammatory, non-lethal, non-malignant disease, still has unjustified etiology. Among many, the theory dealing with this review claims that a suppressed or incompetent immune system that is totally unable to eradicate the non-hemopoietic mesenchymal endometriotic stem cell (MESC) escapes immune surveillance. As a result, there is migration and invasion of the aforementioned cell to ectopic tissues causing the disease. This review focuses on bioactive compounds (i.e. vitamins and minerals) that may have the potential to boost the immune system rendering it capable to fight the MESC and, consequently, endometriosis. The use of vitamins and minerals, also called meganutrients, constitutes the known approach of orthomolecular medicine. However, when scrutinized these methods yield contradicting results but still merit attention.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Jan 30, 2020 Nutritional Treatment of Coronavirus by Andrew W. Saul, Editor (OMNS January 30, 2020) Abundant clinical evidence confirms vitamin C's powerful antiviral effect when used in sufficient quantity. Treating influenza with very large amounts of vitamin C is not a new idea at all. Frederick R. Klenner, MD, and Robert F. Cathcart, MD, successfully used this approach for decades. Frequent oral dosing with vitamin C sufficient to reach a daily bowel tolerance limit will work for most persons. Intravenous vitamin C is indicated for the most serious cases. Bowel tolerance levels of vitamin C, taken as divided doses all throughout the day, are a clinically proven antiviral without equal. Vitamin C can be used alone or right along with medicines if one so chooses. "Some physicians would stand by and see their patients die rather than use ascorbic acid. Vitamin C should be given to the patient while the doctors ponder the diagnosis." (Frederick R. Klenner, MD, chest specialist) Dr. Robert Cathcart advocated treating influenza with up to 150,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily, often intravenously. You and I can, to some extent, simulate a 24 hour IV of vitamin C by taking it by mouth very, very often.
