BOX 3313 Type: ROUTINE INSPECTION Date: 13 March 2014 MONTGOMERY, AL 36109 3.75 (c)(1)(i) HOUSING FACILITIES, GENERAL. ***In the spider monkey and chimpanzee's primary enclosure the shift door, several perches and platforms are rusting. In the spider monkeys third stall there is a horizontal metal bar which is a part of the cage that is pitted as well. Any surfaces that come in contact with nonhuman primates must be free of excessive rust that prevents the required cleaning and sanitization, or that affects the structural strength of the surface. Correct by April 18, 2014. 3.80 (a)(2)(ix) PRIMARY ENCLOSURES. ***In the chimpanzees primary enclosure there was an excessive amount of paint chipping on the walls and chipping of the paint covering the platforms, bars and shifting doors. Primary enclosures must be constructed and maintained so that they enable all surfaces in contact with nonhuman primates to be readily cleaned and sanitized or replaced when worn. Correct by April 18, 2014. 3.81 (e)(1) ENVIRONMENT ENHANCEMENT TO PROMOTE PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING. ***The female chimpanzee is permanently being singly housed and doesn't get to participate with the other chimpanzees in the environmental enhancement. The female chimpanzee is unable to participate with the others due to being bullied. The attending veterinarian may exempt an individual nonhuman primate from participation in the environment enhancement plan in consideration of its well-being. There was no documentation exempting the individual nonhuman primate.The basis of the exemption must be recorded by the attending veterinarian for each exempted nonhuman primate. Unless the basis for the exemption is a permanent condition, the exemption must be reviewed at least every 30 days by the attending veterinarian. Correct by March 22, 2014 3.84 (a) CLEANING, SANITIZATION, HOUSEKEEPING, AND PEST CONTROL. ***In the chimpanzees primary enclosure, after the keeper stated she was finished cleaning, there was feces on the walls and platforms. Perches, bars, and shelves must be kept clean. Correct by March 20, 2014. 3.125 (a) FACILITIES, GENERAL. ***In the Asia barn the nilgai and black bucks enclosure there were boards broken and missing and, boards in the wall that needed to be nailed down and/or replaced. In the axis deer stall the sliding door is splitting and it has jagged edges at the bottom corner that is in disrepair. These broken/missing boards and sliding door shall be repaired and/or replaced to prevent the animals from being injured. Correct by March 22, 2014 ***In the Africa barn the kudu and zebra stalls have several boards in the wall that were broken and should be replaced and/or repaired to minimize injury. Correct by March 22, 2014. ***In the North America barn in the elk and bisons outdoor run the fencing dividing them is in disrepair at the bottom and the ends of the wire is pointing outward than can potentially harm the animals. The fencing shall be repaired and/or replaced to prevent injury of the animals. Correct by March 22, 2014. ***On top of the fencing for the cougar and lynx enclosures there were large branches that could cause damage and compromise the integrity of the containment. The outdoor housing facilities shall be structurally sound and shall be maintained in good repair to protect the animals from injury and to contain the animals. The branches were removed immediately. 3.125 (c) FACILITIES, GENERAL. ***The hay stored in the elephant barn was partially on the pallet. There was only one pallet under the round bale of hay and the corners were on the floor. Supplies of food shall be stored in facilities which adequately protect such supplies against deterioration, molding and contamination. It was corrected immediately by putting the hay on 4 pallets completely elevating the hay off of the floor. 3.127 (c) FACILITIES, OUTDOOR. ***In the North America barn the whitetailed deer, elk and bisons outdoor stall enclosures there was an accumultion of standing water that was not properly draining and was pooling within the primary enclosures.
