Easing her way into your world with soulful songs filled with meaning, like her piano ballad debut single “Damage,” a weighty song about how “love can do some damage.” Growing up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, she absorbed classic influences from FAME Studios (Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett). Sony Music Nashville’s Jim Catino discovered Wammack when she was 17, during a performance in her hometown. Now Wammack is 24, and has sensitivity beyond her years. Accordingly, she doesn’t take the responsibility of making music lightly. She tapped award-winning producer Dann Huff to guide her in the studio and the result is a lovely self-titled EP, which shows an artist ripe with potential. .

WHO'S WHO AT MUSCLE SHOALS SOUND RECORDS 1000 Alabama Avenue, P.O. Box 915, Sheffield, Ala. 35660 (205) 381-9200 Muscle Shoals Sound Records was more or less the natural extension of what had become one of the most successful production organizations in the business. The four principals of the production company, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett, David Hood and Roger Hawkins made up what became the legendary "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section". Jimmy and Roger met while playing in local bands at school dances and clubs along the state line. They were later members of an early 60's group called the Delrays. At the same time David Hood was playing in a group called the Mystics. Johnson was the first to move into studio work when he began working with producer Rick Hall as an engineer and their session guitarist. By 1964 Jimmy and Roger were working regularly at Fame Studios with the occasional assistance of David Hood, when Hood could get away from his father's tire store a block and a half away from the studio. In 1966 Hawkins and Johnson played on their first million seller, "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge. In 1967 Barry Beckett came to Muscle Shoals to cut "I'm Your Puppet" by James and Bobby Purify. It was about that time that Spooner Oldham, the Muscle Shoals keyboard player, decided to move to Mem- phis. Shortly thereafter, Barry Becket and his family came to Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was formed. By the late 1960's there were 3 studios in Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was working at all of them.

An Unlikely Place and Time: Spooner Oldham’s Life in Music By Haley Walden (published in Alabama Music Magazine, 2009) A passing glance at Spooner Oldham’s quiet life in Rogersville, Alabama would give few people reason for pause. His country home is situated on several lush acres off a scenic county road, and a creek flows steadily behind the house. Visitors to the neighborhood might notice Oldham relaxing on the patio with his dogs, Oscar and Porter, and his cats, Waylon and Cash. Or if the front screen door is propped open, a hint of a familiar tune from his baby grand piano may reach their ears. What they probably won’t realize is how much Oldham’s musical career has influenced their lives. Oldham handles the extraordinary details of his life with little ego and a great deal of humility. From Muscle Shoals to Memphis to Los Angeles and all over the world, he has worked with the likes of musical talents Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Jewel, Wilson Pickett, and Percy Sledge, among many others. His songs have appeared on albums by Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Jr., and The Box Tops. He’s a seasoned songwriter and studio musician with a flair for piano and organ, and on April 4th, he’s being inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Born June 14, 1943 in Sheffield, Alabama, Oldham grew up as the music business was blooming in Muscle Shoals, a city a few miles from his hometown of Center Star. FILM SUMMARY MUSCLE SHOALS takes viewers into the small but legendary music studios of Muscle Shoals, Alabama—a small town hugging the south bank of the Tennessee River where some of the greatest music of the 1960s and ‘70s was produced. Rick Hall founded FAME Studios in 1960 and drew artists like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, the Rolling Stones, and the Avett Brothers. It’s where Percy Sledge recorded “When a Man Loves a Woman,” and where Aretha Franklin found her voice in “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You).” It’s where southern rock was birthed, and where British rockers went looking for the “magic” of Muscle Shoals. The film includes meditative shots of the surrounding landscape, intimate studio archival footage, an amazing soundtrack, and revealing interviews with music legends. The film also addresses the racial politics of that time and place. Though the Civil Rights movement was in effect, Alabama was severely segregated, with Governor Wallace standing in the entrance of the University of Alabama in 1963 to defy the desegregation of schools. On his way to the studio, Wilson Pickett recoiled at the sight of active cotton fields nearby. And the producers cautiously navigated local restaurants where they went to eat with their black colleagues. But inside of the walls of the recording studio, skin color meant nothing.
