Sure, f olks around The Shoals who are in some way connected with the music business knew the movie, “MUSCLE SHOALS”, was going to be special. It is the story of Rick Hall and an amalgam of unlikely guitar pickers, drummers and ‘good-old-boys’ who turned our little corner of nowhere into “The Hit Recording Capitol of The World”. As f or Hood and Johnson, these f ellas, along with Roger Hawkins and Barry Beckett, bolted f rom the environs of Hall’s FAME Studios and f or David Ho o d & Jimmy Jo hnso n med their own powerhouse recording empire, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. “MUSCLE SHOALS” chronicles this most-unlikely of success stories. It ac complished a lot more than just memorialize a portion of our area’s musical history. The f ilm has injected new lif e into the storied cache’ of these artist’s care ers… Not that they have been sitting around in ‘idle’ f or all these years. Quite the contrary, as Thursday night’s perf ormance on CBS will illustrate. The guys will be joined on the Letterman Stage by music-legend Candy Staton, who will be some of the music f eatured in “MUSCLE SHOALS”. Thursday night’s perf ormance will also f eature Grammy-Winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Spooner Oldham on keyboards. Rounding out the band are two of The Shoals’ best known artists of today, Rick Hall Grammy-Winner, John Paul White and Jason Isbell – along with some of the Late Show Band members. The show airs at 10:35pm Thursday night. A big turnout is expected at the viewing party over at Swampers Lounge at the Shoals Marriott in Florence. Singer/guitarist Devon Allman, son of Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, leads his band called Honey Tribe and he is a member of Royal Southern Brotherhood as well. Now Devon has recorded his first solo album that is made up songs that are written about his personal life along with one Tom Petty cover song. The 2013 International Blues Challenge was held in Memphis from January 29 – February 2. Ghost Town Blues Band from Memphis did not win, but they did make it to the top ten. They have released two excellent albums and can be seen performing at many local venues. Former Memphian Little G. Weevil won the solo/duo category and best guitarist in that category at the IBC. His excellent album The Teaser is a great example of why he won. Boz Scaggs came to Memphis to record his new album titled, surprisingly enough, Memphis. Most surprising is how well he handles the soul and blues songs on Memphis. Devon Allman – Turquoise Devon Allman is Gregg Allman’s son, but he grew up with his mom in Corpus Christi, Texas, away from the rock & roll lifestyle. He didn’t even meet his dad until he was a teenager, but they are now very close. While Devon was influenced by The Allman Brothers, he was also influenced by a myriad of other musicians and styles of music, so he really doesn’t sound much like The Allman Brothers. Devon has his own unique sound, both in his guitar playing and his singing. Some have tried to compare him to his uncle Duane, but aside from both having blonde hair and favoring Les Paul guitars, there aren’t a lot of similarities.

WHO'S WHO AT MUSCLE SHOALS SOUND RECORDS 1000 Alabama Avenue, P.O. Box 915, Sheffield, Ala. 35660 (205) 381-9200 Muscle Shoals Sound Records was more or less the natural extension of what had become one of the most successful production organizations in the business. The four principals of the production company, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett, David Hood and Roger Hawkins made up what became the legendary "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section". Jimmy and Roger met while playing in local bands at school dances and clubs along the state line. They were later members of an early 60's group called the Delrays. At the same time David Hood was playing in a group called the Mystics. Johnson was the first to move into studio work when he began working with producer Rick Hall as an engineer and their session guitarist. By 1964 Jimmy and Roger were working regularly at Fame Studios with the occasional assistance of David Hood, when Hood could get away from his father's tire store a block and a half away from the studio. In 1966 Hawkins and Johnson played on their first million seller, "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge. In 1967 Barry Beckett came to Muscle Shoals to cut "I'm Your Puppet" by James and Bobby Purify. It was about that time that Spooner Oldham, the Muscle Shoals keyboard player, decided to move to Mem- phis. Shortly thereafter, Barry Becket and his family came to Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was formed. By the late 1960's there were 3 studios in Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was working at all of them.
