The well-known and oft cited letter of 9th June 1751 from Han- bury Williams (fig. 1) to his friend Henry Fox at Holland House, Kensington, where his china was stored, sets the scene. Fawkener had asked Hanbury Williams ‘…to send over models for different Pieces from hence, in order to furnish the Undertakers with good designs... But I thought it better and cheaper for the manufacturers to give them leave to take away any of my china from Holland House, and to copy what they like.’ Thus allowing Fawkener ‘… and anybody He brings with him, to see my China & to take away such pieces as they have a mind to Copy.’ The result of this exchange of correspondence and Hanbury Williams’ generous offer led to an almost instant influx of Meissen designs at Chelsea, a tremendous impetus to the nascent porcelain industry that was to influ- ence the course of events across the industry in England. Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections. -

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: EDO PRINT ART AND ITS WESTERN INTERPRETATIONS Elizabeth R. Nash, Master of Arts, 2004 Thesis directed by: Professor Sandy Kita Department of Art History and Archaeology This thesis focuses on the disparity between the published definitions and interpretations of the artistic and cultural value of Edo prints to Japanese culture by nineteenth-century French and Americans. It outlines the complexities that arise when one culture defines another, and also contrasts stylistic and cultural methods in the field of art history. Louis Gonse, S. Bing and other nineteenth-century European writers and artists were impressed by the cultural and intellectual achievements of the Tokugawa government during the Edo period, from 1615-1868. Contemporary Americans perceived Edo as a rough and immoral city. Edward S. Morse and Ernest Fenollosa expressed this American intellectual disregard for the print art of the Edo period. After 1868, the new Japanese government, the Meiji Restoration, as well as the newly empowered imperial court had little interest in the art of the failed military government of Edo. Abstract: Chinese painting has own a unique national style over several years development, and it has been an artistic achievement with rich cultural connotations. Starting from the analysis of the role of Chinese painting in art teaching, this paper elaborates the importance of Chinese painting in various aspects, points out the misunderstandings and problems existing in the current art teaching, and finally puts forward corresponding countermeasures, which will play a certain role in the development of Chinese painting teaching in art education. 1. Research Background 1.1 Literature review In the course of high school art, the teacher guides the students step by step to understand the concept of Chinese painting and its expression methods and characteristics according to the corresponding teaching materials, which is conducive to the students' inheritance of national culture and self-improvement of spiritual realm and personal ability (Yang, 2012). Chinese culture is the basis of learning Chinese painting, so in teaching, teachers must let students have a rich national culture, in order to facilitate further learning. Born in Luodong town of Yilan county in northern Taiwan, he first learned ink painting from his father. After teach- ing art for several years, he spent four years studying painting with the important Japanese watercolor painter Ishikawa Kinichiro (1871–1945). Ran’s impressionistic watercolors portray a deeply felt record With a deep understanding of Chinese brushwork and the of life in Taiwan, touching on the natural beauty of rural life and elegant watercolor strokes of Ishikawa, Ran developed a unique vivacity of the suburban scene. Capturing the excitement of a style that emphasized the changes in fluidity of ink and water- dragon dance with loose and erratic strokes, the mystery and color. When visiting a relative or a fancy restaurant, perhaps you have dined on “fine china.” While today we appreciate porcelain dinnerware for the refinement it can add to an occasion, this conception is founded on centuries of exchange between Asian and Western markets. Chinese porcelain production has a long history of experimentation, innovation, and inspiration resulting in remarkably beautiful examples of form and imagery. At the VMFA, you will examine objects from a small portion of this history — the 18th century during the Qing Dynasty — to expand your understanding of global exchange in this era. QING DYNASTY Emperors, Arts, and Trade Around the end of the 16th century, a Jurchin leader named Nurhaci (1559–1626) brought together various nomadic groups who became known as the Manchus. His forces quickly conquered the area of present-day Manchuria, and his heirs set their sights on China. In 1636 the Manchus chose the new name of Qing, meaning “pure,” to emphasize their intention to purify China by seizing power from the Ming dynasty. -
