United Airlines Temporarily Reduces Flight Schedule at ABI December 7, 2020 | NR #120720071 MEDIA CONTACTS: Kate Alvarez, Abilene Regional Airport Marketing & Development Manager Interim Public Information Contact, City of Abilene Ph: 325.734.5316, Email: [email protected] United Airlines temporarily reduces flight schedule at ABI ABILENE, Texas – Due to COVID-19 and the CDC’s recommendation to limit air travel, United Airlines operated by SkyWest Airlines will reduce their flight schedule at Abilene Regional Airport to one round trip flight per day beginning January 5th. The flight schedule for ABI is as follows*: Frequency Departure Airport Departing Time Arrival Airport Arrival Time Daily ABI 6:45 a.m. IAH 8:10 a.m. Daily IAH 8:00 p.m. ABI 9:10 p.m. *The schedule varies and may be subject to change “We think this is the best use of our resources,” said Don Green, City of Abilene Director of Transportation Service. “January is typically a slower month during normal years, and this decision helps ensure that we won’t exhaust grant funds during a time of market duress…[or something of the like] The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Abilene Regional Airport a $1 million Small Community Air Service Development Grant to be used as a market revenue guarantee and subsidize the carrier’s losses while it establishes a new route from Abilene to Houston. ABI and SkyWest Airlines decided a reduction in flights during January would be the fiscally responsible action while the carrier navigates the volatile travel market during the pandemic. Abilene Regional Airport and SkyWest Airlines will reevaluate future flight bookings at the end of January to gauge February’s schedule. This plane had its origins in 1964, when Boeing began work on a proposal for the C-5A large military airlifter contract, and after Lockheed won that contest, Boeing considered a commercial passenger version as a means of salvaging the program. Urged on by Pan Am president Juan Trippe, Boeing in 1965 assigned a team headed by Chief Engineer Joe Sutter to design a large new airliner, although Boeing at the time was really more focused on its supersonic transport (SST) program. A launch customer order from Pan Am on April 13, 1966 for twenty five aircraft pushed Sutter's program into high gear, and in a truly herculian effort, Joe Sutter and his Boeing team, dubbed “The Incredibles,” brought the program from inception on paper to the public unveiling of a finished aircraft in the then unheard of time of 29 months. The airport master planning process for San Angelo Regional Airport (SJT) began with an inventory of existing facilities (Chapter One) followed by an evaluation of existing and potential future operational demand (Chapter Two) and facilities necessary to accommodate such demand (Chapter Three). Development alternatives were formulated to meet airport needs (Chapter Four) and then presented to the Planning and Technical Advisory Committees. Input received from these committees, Airport Leadership, and City Leadership resulted in the identification of the Recommended Development Concept. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the recommended direction for the future development of SJT. This begins with a definition of the Recommended Development Concept. This concept will be appropriately phased, taking into consideration the planning horizons defined within the aviation forecasts and facility requirements. The phasing will result in the formulation of a Capital Improvement Program and a financial plan will define the financial implications and opportunities of planned development. Recommended Development Concept The Recommended Development Concept is depicted on Exhibit 5A. This concept provides airport improvements that not only conform to the City’s goals and objectives but also meet identified facility needs while maintaining flexibility for future airfield expansion.
