AIRLINE ALLIANCES by Paul Stephen Dempsey Director, Institute of Air & Space Law McGill University Copyright © 2008 by Paul Stephen Dempsey Before Alliances, there was Pan American World Airways . and Trans World Airlines. Before the mega- Alliances, there was interlining, facilitated by IATA Like dogs marking territory, airlines around the world are sniffing each other's tail fins looking for partners." Daniel Riordan “The hardest thing in working on an alliance is to coordinate the activities of people who have different instincts and a different language, and maybe worship slightly different travel gods, to get them to work together in a culture that allows them to respect each other’s habits and convictions, and yet work productively together in an environment in which you can’t specify everything in advance.” Michael E. Levine “Beware a pact with the devil.” Martin Shugrue Airline Motivations For Alliances • the desire to achieve greater economies of scale, scope, and density; • the desire to reduce costs by consolidating redundant operations; • the need to improve revenue by reducing the level of competition wherever possible as markets are liberalized; and • the desire to skirt around the nationality rules which prohibit multinational ownership and cabotage. NORTHWEST AIRLINES 1926-2010 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE QUEEN OF THE SKIES Personal Retrospectives by Robert DuBert It's hard to believe that they are gone. Can it be possible that it was 50 years ago this September that this aircraft made its first public appearance? Are we really all so, ahem, elderly that we Photo: True Brand, courtesy Vincent Carrà remember 1968 as if it were yesterday? This plane had its origins in 1964, when Boeing began work on a proposal for the C-5A large military airlifter contract, and after Lockheed won that contest, Boeing considered a commercial passenger version as a means of salvaging the program. Urged on by Pan Am president Juan Trippe, Boeing in 1965 assigned a team headed by Chief Engineer Joe Sutter to design a large new airliner, although Boeing at the time was really more focused on its supersonic transport (SST) program. A launch customer order from Pan Am on April 13, 1966 for twenty five aircraft pushed Sutter's program into high gear, and in a truly herculian effort, Joe Sutter and his Boeing team, dubbed “The Incredibles,” brought the program from inception on paper to the public unveiling of a finished aircraft in the then unheard of time of 29 months. We're talking, of course, about the legendary and incomparable Boeing 747. THE ROLLOUT It was a bright, sunny morning on Monday, Sept. -

MIRVAT EL-NADY, and EGYPTAIR AIRLINES MEMORANDUM AND ORDER ON DEFENDANT EGYPTAIR AIRLINES’ MOTION FOR SUMMARY JUDGMENT March 21, 2012 STEARNS, D.J. Plaintiff Colin Bower brought this action on his own behalf and in his capacity as the guardian of his two minor children after his former wife, defendant Mirvat El- Nady, fled to Cairo, Egypt, in August of 2009, taking the children with her without his consent and in violation of a Massachusetts court order granting custody to Bower. This decision does not affect the validity of the custody order, or the criminal prosecution of Mirvat El-Nady. Rather, it involves a related but separate claim against defendant EgyptAir, the airline on which El-Nady flew with her children from New York to Cairo. Bower alleges that EgyptAir should have refused passage to El-Nady and the children, and by failing to do so is liable for interference with his custodial Case 1:10-cv-10405-RGS Document 175 Filed 03/21/12 Page 2 of 28 relations, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and loss of filial consortium. MEDIA RELEASE SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS SUSPENDS ALL INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS UNTIL 31 May 2020 JOHANNESBURG, 20 March 2020 –South African Airways (SAA) has announced that it will immediately suspend all international operations until 31 May 2020 in response to a government travel ban aimed at stopping the transmission of the Coronavirus (Covid-19). The COVID-19 pandemic and attendant travel restrictions, resulted in substantial decline in demand for air travel. The situation caused many airlines across the world to ground aircraft, release their employees, and to cancel flights. In the case of SAA, this decision means that SAA will only render services on its regional and domestic routes. Following the declaration of the State of Disaster after the outbreak of COVID-19 in South Africa, the government announced a travel ban and issued regulations, which introduced certain measures aimed at combatting the spread or transmission of the virus. Amongst other things, the regulations, issued on Thursday state that: “Disembarkation of foreign nationals from the high-risk countries is suspended on airports upon arrival. Embarkation and disembarkation is permissible under the following circumstances: Disembarkation of returning South African citizens and permanent residents; embarkation of departing foreign nationals, disembarkation of a declared medical emergency; foreign nationals must be approved by port health services; upon landing, crew from high risk countries shall be subject to medical screening and quarantined for 21 days”. SAA operates in three markets that form part of countries listed in the travel ban as high-risk areas. These are the United States (Washington DC and New York, JFK), the United Kingdom (London, Heathrow) and Germany (Frankfurt and Munich).
