  • Art of the X-Files
On May 19th 2013, fans of The X-Files were given a rare treat; a chance to spend time with the minds behind the art of The X-Files. The event, held at the iconic Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, and celebrated by the Art Directors Guild Film Society, the American Cinematheque, and The Hollywood Reporter, brought together production designer Corey Kaplan (The X-Files, Scandal, Cold Case, Robbery Homicide Division), writer-producer-director Vince Gilligan (The X-Files, Breaking Bad, The Lone Gunmen, Harsh Realm) and Creator-Writer-Producer-Director Chris Carter (The X-Files, Harsh Realm, Millennium, The Lone Gunmen). Moderated by production designer John Muto (Home Alone, River’s Edge, Terminator 2 3-D), the event presented the art and design of The X-Files by screening “Je Souhaite” and “Triangle” and included a panel discussion. What made this event unique is that as a television viewing audience, we often celebrate and obsess over actors, and at times writers and producers. We become deeply connected to the characters and to the story of the hardships they face. However, the world that is created by the Art Department under the guidance of the Production Designer often goes unmentioned. This is likely due to the ability of the visual medium to submerse the viewer into an environment so compelling that we momentarily suspend belief. We forget the complexities of set design and construction, of picking out the right costumes and maintaining outfit continuity, of choosing makeup that both enhances the character yet seems realistic, of creating convincing special effects, and the arduous search for the perfect location.

  • New Sappho” and “Newest Sappho”
The Study of Historical and Philological Papyrology: Case Studies “New Sappho” and “Newest Sappho” A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of Classics University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba Copyright © 2018 by Bianca Lysette Claudio Abstract This thesis investigates how a recently discovered papyrus fragment is analyzed by examining closely two new Sappho papyri found within the last decade, known as the “Newest Sappho” and “New Sappho” respectively. The former consists of a set of fragments discovered in 2014 by Dirk Obbink which contains both the Brothers Song and Kypris Song; the latter denotes another set of fragments including the Tithonus Song, published by Martin Gronewald and Robert Daniel in 2004. The investigation of the new discoveries will be divided into two case studies: the first will be focused on the P. Sapph. Obbink fragment and its Brothers Song, exploring the possibility that the Brothers Song is not necessarily Sappho’s work, but rather an example of an ancient imitation. The second case study will be focused on Sappho’s Tithonus Song, as preserved in P.Köln. inv. 21351+21376. My investigation for this section will proceed first by identifying the actual length of the Tithonus Song – examining where the poem begins and where it ends, and continue by addressing how Sappho interprets old age in her poem. Each of the two case studies will be divided further into two methodologies – a papyrological and philological approach – which will govern my analysis, addressing certain problems and issues that are unique to each find.

  • 1 Making Love, Making Reality: Propertius, Prosopopoeia
MAKING LOVE, MAKING REALITY: PROPERTIUS, PROSOPOPOEIA, AND POETRY’S POWER OF CREATION By RANDALL LAWRENCE CHILDREE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2007 1 © 2007 Randall Lawrence Childree 2 For Lawrence Childree e pluribus unum 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My greatest thanks are owed to my chairman, Timothy Johnson. He was patient with a student whose writing patterns and work habits were, no doubt infuriatingly, very different from his own. All the same he provided encouragement when it was needed, motivation when it was, and new perspectives when they were. His advice on life matters counted no less. I am an improved scholar and person because of his efforts. Robert Wagman, Jennifer Rea, Karelisa Hartigan, and Gareth Schmeling have all contributed to my improvement, sometimes in ways that they probably do not realize. I also have to mention Druscilla Gurahoo, who always had a chair for me, a good story and a smile, and who also provided more than a few relaxing moments when I was exhausted. My friends and fellow students in the department have all meant a great deal to me, but particularly three. I will always owe Dustin Heinen a debt of gratitude: when I was trapped in San Giacomo, he was my only outlet to civilization and the only thing that kept me sane. Jon Zarecki has paradoxically both shown me how much fun it can be to act utterly ridiculous, and modeled what it means to succeed in our profession.

  • NVS 3-2-1 S-Tomaiuolo.Pdf
A Map of Tennysonian Misreading: Postmodern (Re)visions Saverio Tomaiuolo (Cassino University, Italy) Abstract: From the time of his submission of a poem for a literary prize as an adolescent, Tennyson conceived poetry in ‘prophetic’ terms, and ‘Timbuctoo’ (1829) engaged him in constructing his role as poetic voice in (and for) the present and in (and for) the future. In this sense, Ulysses’s sentence “I am become a name” in the eponymous poem is paradigmatic of Tennyson’s approach to his envisaged poetic afterlife. As a writer of poetry, a representative of Victorian thought and a ‘brand name’ in nineteenth-century literary and cultural market, Tennyson has been constantly subject to adaptations, revisions and intersemiotic translations. Using Harold Bloom’s ideas on the inevitability of “misreading” as a driving force in the reception and successive re-creation of poetry, this analysis will try and retrace a ‘map’ of Tennysonian rewritings with particular reference to ‘Tithonus’ (1860), ‘The Lady of Shalott’ (1842), ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ (1854) and In Memoriam (1850) in a wide range of heterogeneous texts, including nostalgic fictional biographies, war movies, science-fiction and fantasy TV serials, teen-ager novels, pop and heavy metal music, crime novels, and experimental postmodern fictions. Keywords: adaptation, brand name, intersemiotic translation, misreading, neo-Victorian, postmodernity, rewriting, Alfred Tennyson, Victorian. ***** Everything began with a postcard. Its effect was a mixture of surprise and pleasure, like unexpected “letters unto trembling hands”. It was a postcard from a friend who knew my interest in Tennyson and decided to make fun of me (and of it).
