(Jones 94).

24683_U01.qxd 11/15/04 12:53 PM Page 1 Introduction “Dead alive, dead outside, alive inside” “In my thinking, I see that people forgot me.” Catarina said this to me as she sat peddling an old exercise bicycle and holding a doll. This woman of kind manners, with a piercing gaze, was in her early thirties; her speech was lightly slurred. I first met Catarina in March 1997, in southern Brazil at a place called Vita. I remember asking myself: where on earth does she think she is going on this bicycle? Vita is the end- point. Like many others, Catarina had been left there to die. Vita, which means “life” in Latin, is an asylum in Porto Alegre, a com- paratively well-off city of some two million people. Vita was founded in 1987 by Zé das Drogas, a former street kid and drug dealer. After his conversion to Pentecostalism, Zé had a vision in which the Spirit told him to open an institution where people like him could find God and regenerate their lives. Zé and his religious friends squatted on private property near downtown, where they began a makeshift rehabilitation center for drug addicts and al- coholics. Soon, however, the scope of Vita’s mission began to widen. An in- creasing number of people who had been cut off from family life—the men- tally ill and the sick, the unemployed and the homeless—were left there by relatives, neighbors, hospitals, and the police. Vita’s team then opened an in- firmary, where the abandoned waited with death.

It was born out of the recognition that scientific discovery and the creation of plausible fictional scenarios are often two sides of the same coin. Each relies on an understanding of the way the world works, coupled with the imaginative ability to invent new or alternative explanations—and even other worlds. Authored by practicing scientists as well as writers of hard science fiction, these books explore and exploit the borderlands between accepted science and its fictional counterpart. Uncovering mutual influences, promoting fruitful interaction, narrating and analyzing fictional scenarios, together they serve as a reaction vessel for inspired new ideas in science, technology, and beyond. Whether fiction, fact, or forever undecidable: the Springer Series “Science and Fiction” intends to go where no one has gone before! Its largely non-technical books take several different approaches. Journey with their authors as they • Indulge in science speculation—describing intriguing, plausible yet unproven ideas; • Exploit science fiction for educational purposes and as a means of promoting critical thinking; • Explore the interplay of science and science fiction—throughout the history of the genre and looking ahead; • Delve into related topics including, but not limited to: science as a creative process, the limits of science, interplay of literature and knowledge; • Tell fictional short stories built around well-defined scientific ideas, with a supplement summarizing the science underlying the plot.

  • Aubrey Parke: an Enthusiastic Amateur in Fiji?
Aubrey Parke: An Enthusiastic Amateur in Fiji? Matthew Spriggs Over the next 16 years [after Gifford’s 1947 project] the only archaeological work was carried out by enthusiastic amateurs. One of these was Aubrey Parke… (Best 1993:396) Background and Career Aubrey Laurence Parke was born on 11 November 1925, the son of Laurence Stanley Parke (1890–1940) and Mildred Frances Parke. He was born some two years after his father participated in the Dorset Minor Counties Cricket Championship team. Aubrey—no mean hand with the bat himself—came from a long line of cricketers, his grandfather Laurence P. Parke (1860–1929) having participated in the same Counties championship in 1902. Aubrey’s father was the only one of three cricketing brothers to have survived the Great War, and Aubrey was presumably named after one of the two that didn’t return, John Aubrey Parke (1892–1915). The third brother was Walter Evelyn Parke (1891–1914), who merited an obituary in Wisden such was his prowess on the pitch as a left-handed batsman. The family had a military and legal background, which included service in places such as the Crimea, Jamaica and even a diplomatic posting in Mexico.1 Aubrey was born in Moreton, Dorset, while the previous few generations hailed from Henbury House in Sturminster Marshall parish, near Wimborne. Henbury House had been bought in 1847 by his great-great-grandfather Charles (born Jamaica 1791). The family are traceable back to Whitbeck Hall in Cumberland in the 1620s. His father Laurence Stanley Parke took up the position of Commissioner of Police in Aden, then a British colony, leaving the family, including a younger sister Bridget, to be raised by relatives.

IN LOVE IN A MOVIE: WOMEN AND CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC COMEDY By ANDREA ROCHELLE MABRY A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2004 Copyright 2004 by Andrea Rochelle Mabry For Olivia and Grace ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is very much a collaborative effort, and for its existence I am indebted to a great many people. I first wish to express my appreciation to the faculty of the University of Florida Department of English, particularly the members of my dissertation committee. Professor Maureen Turim, my advisor and dissertation director, has been an invaluable mentor, not only over the course of this project, but throughout my studies at Florida. Her guidance in the writing of this dissertation, from the original seed of an idea to the final reading, has been invaluable. I am also truly grateful to Professors Susan Hegeman, Roger Beebe, and Nora Alter for their enthusiasm, their advice, and their encouragement to take my work to new levels. My thanks also go out to my fellow graduate students in the Florida English Department for their friendship and their good humor. The camaraderie of other students helped lighten many a stressful day as I worked to complete this journey. Finally, my family—Mom, Dad, Linda, Christine, Tony, Olivia and Grace—have always provided me with love and support, not just as I wrote this dissertation, but all along the road I have taken to get to this point. For that they have my love and my thanks.
