This is the 120th year for Carnaval in Mazatlan. The theme for 2018 is "patasalada, el circo de los talentos" - in a way, it all means Mazatlan has got tremendous talent! The Mexicans use the phrase pata salada [salty feet] for those born in Mazatlan and they have chosen to celebrate all the fabulous home-grown talent - "circo de los talentos" [circus of talents]- such as Pedro Infante, Lola Beltrán, Rigo Luis, Enrique Patrón de Ruede, Joe Conde, Antonio López Saenz, Angela Peralta and Luis Pérez Meza. The "stars" are celebrated through colourful paper mache sculptures that dot along the Malecon and in the Plazuela Machado. This year the party is different for two reasons: the upcoming Tourist Tianguis in April and on the ongoing construction on Av. de Mar. To protect the new improvements on Olas Altas the Carnaval party zone has been moved north - from Angel Flores [deer monument] to Casa del Marino, on Paseo Claussen in front of the Lido Condo. You can enter the "party zone" from Angel Flores, Zaragoza and Los Pinos. It's free again, but expect long line-ups for security checks.
