Zetela is a genus of marine gastropods belonging to the family Solariellidae (Vetigastropoda, Trochoidea). The species Zetela alphonsi Vilvens, 2002 was origi- nally described using classical conchological characters from samples obtained from deep water off Chiloé, Chile, but no other features were recorded in the original description. In the present paper, taxonomically relevant characters such as the operculum, radula, and soft part anatomy are illustrated and described for the first time from a specimen of Zetela alphonsi from a new locality, a methane seep area off the coast of central Chile. We find that many features differ substantially from other members of the genus, including several which deviate from characters that are diagnostic for Zetela. Zetela alphonsi also lacks retinal screening pigment, giving the appearance of eyelessness from gross examination. Although pigmenta- tion loss has been reported in other deep sea genera, this feature has not been re- ported in any other members of Zetela. We reconstructed a tomographic model of the eye and eyestalk, and demonstrate that a vestigial eye is still present but exter- nally invisible due to the loss of pigmentation. Based on these new morphological characters, particularly observations of the radula, we suggest that the current placement of this species in the genus Zetela should be reconsidered.

A total of 22 tubes of Ceriantharia from Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Norway, Portugal and the United States were analysed, revealing 58 species of marine invertebrates using them as alternative substrates. Based on a literature review and analyses of the sampled material, we report new occurrences for Photis sarae (Crustacea), Microgaza rotella (Mollusca), Brada sp., Dipolydora spp., Notocirrus spp., and Syllis garciai (Annelida).

Assignment of species to genera has proved difficult in the past, and the type genus has sometimes acted as a ‘wastebasket’ for species that cannot easily be referred to another genus. In the light of a new systematic framework provided by two recent publications presenting the first molecular phylogenetic data for the group, we reassess the shell characters that are most useful for delimiting genera.

A total of 100 species, including 45 species of Gastropoda, 54 species of Bivalvia, and one species of Scaphopoda, were discriminated. The fauna is referred to the Kadonosawa Fauna s.s. on the basis of the occurrences of the intertidal “Arcid-Potamid Fauna” and the upper sublittoral Dosinia-Anadara Assemblage. The upper sublittoral assemblages include Turritella (Turritella) kiiensis Yokoyama, Turritella (Hataiella) yoshidai Kotaka, T. (Kurosioia) neiensis Ida, Ostrea sunakozakaensis (Ogasawara), Cucullaea (Cucullaea) toyamaensis Tsuda, Siphonalia osawanoensis Tsuda, and Varicospira toyamaensis (Tsuda). These species are distributed as far north as the southernmost part of northeast Honshû at that time, and their geographic distributions are identical with the Miocene mangrove swamp element. The occurrences of these species strongly support the previous paleoclimatic reconstruction of the Japanese Islands during the latest Early–earliest Middle Miocene age on the basis of the intertidal molluscan assemblages, and show that central and southwest Honshû was under the warmer marine climate than in northeast Honshû and northwards. All the species including a new cardiid, Parvicardium? mikii sp. nov., are described and/or discussed taxonomically.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The family Seguenziidae, including the genus Adeuomphalus, of the northeast Pacific are here revised. Seguenzia megaloconcha Rokop, 1972 is here synonymized under S. cervola Dall, 1919, S. quinni McLean, 1985 is here synonymized under S. gioviae Dall, 1919, S. catalina Dall, 1919 and S. certoma Dall, 1919 are synonymized under S. stephanica Dall, 1908. They represent either growth stages of one another, or are based on insignificant minor sculptural differences. A short commentary on the contraproductive proliferation of taxonomic data portals and the need for a single resource akin to GenBank is given. Introduction This contribution was started by the late James H. McLean as part of his Northeast Pacific Gastropod book project. The manuscript in outline form was significantly modified and few of McLean’s taxonomic indications in the manuscript were accepted. Dimensions given are for maximum size in any axis. Abundance indications have been omitted because the number of samples from bathyal and abyssal depths is very small, which precludes any meaningful assessment of their true abundance.
