This involves managing staff, contracts and key relationships including the Somerset County Council Volunteer Service, our Voluntary Sector Infrastructure support contract and our Armed Forces Covenant. The Public Health Specialist (Stronger Communities Manager) is in the Public Health team, reporting to a Consultant in Public Health. This position is driven by the values of Public Health: identifying and addressing inequalities, promoting wellbeing and preventing illness. This post has particular responsibility for promoting and supporting stronger communities, managing the Somerset County Council Volunteer service and Somerset’s Armed Forces Covenant. Here's what you can expect to be doing You will be the person that the organisation and partners look to for leadership, advice and guidance around your areas of specialism. This post has responsibility for a number of contracts that support the voluntary sector and line management of several direct reports (including those managing others). As an experienced manager you will be used to supervising staff working across a range of service areas and keeping a grip on budgets. You will play a pro-active role in driving forward the public health agenda with communities. You will also be active in promoting the voice of communities, the voluntary sector and the commitments of the Armed Forces covenant within Somerset County Council and with our partners. A few things about you We are looking for an excellent communicator with a proven ability to develop strong working relationships. This includes the ability to engage with elected members, senior managers, staff, customers and service users. We want someone with an understanding of commissioning, including procurement and contract management. Knowledge and experience of relationships between the voluntary and statutory sectors will be beneficial, as will an understanding of the armed forces covenant. The role is based in the Partnership Business Unit as part of the Quality Assurance, Safeguarding and Care team in Children’s Social Care. 3 The Partnership Business Unit is responsible for ensuring that the Somerset child and young person has a voice about the ways all services are delivered to them and we work closely with children, young people, their families and communities, the services that support them and the stakeholders and decision-makers who can drive improvement for those services. Here's what you can expect to be doing • The role will involve applying your creative communication and engagement experience to play a leading role in promoting and raising awareness of the voice of the child and young person • Propose, plan & execute an engagement communications strategy for the Unit that is ambitious, accessible and engaging • Transfer children and young people’s ideas into professional communication for stakeholders and practitioners through working closely with Participation and Engagement Workers and the children and young people forums they support • This will include work being undertaken by the Somerset Youth Forum, Somerset Youth Parliament, The UnStoppables, Somerset Care Councils and the Participation Workers Network. • Collect case studies to demonstrate the benefits being realised for children and young people • Produce resources for use in awareness raising and staff and elected member training • Contribute to the quarterly and annual reporting of ‘Our Plan’ – the Somerset Children & Young Person’s Plan and Corporate Parenting Board reports to ensure that the voice of the child and young person is heard at strategic and board level • Play a key role in producing the next Children and Young People’s Plan and Corporate Parenting Board Strategy • You will work with staff at all levels across the Authority, and in partnership with the district councils, schools, health services and the police. You will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the successful delivery of communications about participation with children and young people and their families • You will also deputise in the manager’s absence • You will line manage an apprentice and supervise young volunteers. A few things about you • You will be educated to Level 4 or higher standard with a specialism in communication or design • You will need to use your excellent communication skills to engage with children and young people in creative ways, to find out what matters to them and to promote their voice to impact service improvement • Working with Participation and Engagement Workers, families and local communities is central to our approach as we work to the ethos of coproduction, as we know this achieves the best outcomes for people • You will have an appreciation for the role of service users and
