December 2009 Introduction I am pleased to introduce our summary of the Upper Mersey Catchment Flood Management Plan (CFMP). This CFMP gives an overview of the flood risk in the Upper Mersey catchment and sets out our preferred plan for sustainable flood risk management over the next 50 to 100 years. The Upper Mersey CFMP is one of 77 CFMPs for England home to approximately 1.2million people with South and Wales. The River Dean is the major tributary of the Bollin, and the catchment area totals 273 km2. The section of river visited flows through Styal Country Park, downstream of Quarry Bank Mill, and is owned by the National Trust. A previous Wild Trout Trust visit was carried out further downstream at the National Trust property at Dunham Massey. The Bollin falls within the remit of the Mersey Life Project which aims to carry out a phased programme of river restoration, initially focussing on the non-tidal section of the River Mersey, the River Bollin and River Goyt (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/wildlife/102362.aspx). River Mersey Facts The River Mersey is 112km long (70 miles). Mersey means ‘boundary river’ in Anglo-Saxon. For centuries, the river formed part of the boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire. The Course of the River Mersey The river is formed from three tributaries: the River Etherow (a tributary of the River Goyt), the River Goyt and the River Tame, which flows through Greater Manchester. The river starts at the confluence of the River Tame and River Goyt in Stockport, flowing through south Manchester, between Urmston and Sale, towards Warrington. Here it widens, before narrowing, as it passes by Runcorn and Widnes. From Runcorn, the river widens into a large estuary near Ellesmere Port. The Mersey finishes at Liverpool Bay, flowing into the Irish Sea.
