Burton ABSTRACT Founded as a quasi-utopian society by New England evangelists, Oberlin became the central hub of extreme social reform in Ohio’s Western Reserve. Scholars have looked at Oberlin from political and cultural perspectives, but have placed little emphasis on religion. That is to say, although religion is a major highlight of secondary scholarship, few have placed the community appropriately in the dynamic of the East and West social reform movement. Historians have often ignored, or glossed over this important element and how it represented the divergence between traditional orthodoxy in New England and Middle-Atlantic states, and the new religious hybrids found in the West. -

My sole purpose in publishing the following Narrative is to save from oblivion the facts connected with one of the most important movements of this age, with reference to the overthrow of American slavery. My own personal experience in it, under the orders of Capt. Brown, on the 16th and 17th of October, 1859, as the only man alive who was at Harper's Ferry during the entire time — the unsuccessful groping after these facts, by individuals, impossible to be obtained, except from an actor in the scene — and the conviction that the cause of impartial liberty requires this duty at my hands — alone have been the motives for writing and cir- culating the little book herewith presented. I will not, under such circumstances, insult nor burden the intelligent with excuses for defects in composition, nor for the attempt to give the facts. A plain, unadorned, truthful story is wanted, and that by one who knows what he says, who is known to have been at the great en- counter, and to have labored in shaping the same. -

Winfried Siemerling “May I See Some Identification?” Race, Borders, and Identities in Any Known Blood Race isn’t about skin colour. It’s about social categorization. — . every identity is actually an identification come to light. — 1 Our most post-identitarian moments and movements notwithstanding, identities are hardly a matter of the past. New constructions of identities and post-identities are continually wrought by historical subjects, the agents who invent or choose them, and who modify, resist, or discard them. “Unused” identities continue to exist as possible scripts, as virtual and often virulent realities until human actors put them into play, and through iden- tification use them in practice and performance. One of the important ways of crossing borders of identity is travel, a movement I explore here with respect to “Crossing Cultures,” “Frontiers of North American Identity,”1 and identities ascribed or self-ascribed through “race.” Identification, a transformative displacement or transposition and a form of cognitive travel, signals the crossing of borders of who we think we are, or who others think or say we are. Under the sign of “race,” however, identity, identifica- tion, and travel have worked in particularly “arresting” constellations. Through race, identity and identification were tied to pseudo-scientific laws of biology, abetting the enforced displacements and the end of free personal movement in the middle passage and in slavery, and the impeded mobility across social and economic lines ever after. Lawrence Hill continues to devise, from a Canadian vantage point, intriguing laboratories for the study of the intricate relations between iden- tification, identity, and race. -

INDEX RACE WAR NOT CIVIL WAR John Anderson Copeland, Jr. was trapped along with his uncle Lewis Sheridan Leary and John Henry Kagi in “Hall’s Rifle Works” at the Harpers Ferry armory. When the three men made a run for the Shenandoah River they were trapped in a crossfire, but after Kagi had been killed and Leary had been shot several times and placed under arrest, Copeland was able to surrender without having been wounded. He refused to speak during his trial and was hanged with too short a drop and thus strangled slowly. On December 29, when a crowd of 3,000 would attend his funeral in his hometown of Oberlin, Ohio, there would be no body to bury, for after his cadaver had been temporarily interred in Charles Town it had been dug up and was in service in the instruction of students at the medical college in Winchester, Virginia. A monument was erected by the citizens of Oberlin in honor of their three fallen free citizens of color, Copeland, Leary, and Shields Green (the 8-foot marble monument would be moved to Vine Street Park in 1971). Judge Parker stated in his story of the trials (St. Louis Globe Democrat, April 8, 1888) that Copeland had been “the prisoner who impressed me best. He was a free negro. He had been educated, and there was a dignity about him that I could not help liking. -

We know the routine: marriage is the enemy of lesbian desire, and realist novels can represent passion between women only as a subversion of the natural, social, and aesthetic order upheld by marriage. -

C. Croly, writer Julia Ward Howe, and settlement house leader Jane Addams, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) encouraged housewives to lobby for local reform, and, ultimately, national suffrage, under the banner of municipal housekeeping. The rhetoric of this all-female organization is an important, yet overlooked, context to what literary critic Elizabeth Ammons has identified as the renaissance of American women’s literature that occurred during the Progressive Era. Ammons names seventeen women, writing between 1870 and 1930, whose work now stands at the heart of the canon of American literature, including Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Kate Chopin, Sarah Orne Jewett, Willa Cather, and Mary Austin. These five women had an intimate acquaintance with women’s clubs. Placing their writing in the context of club rhetoric demonstrates how women used a particular set of tropes and themes to probe a central political debate of the Progressive Era: the “Woman Question.” The women’s club movement developed a stirring, feminine rhetoric to justify women’s place in public life. Women writers used club discourse as raw material for fashioning their own theories about gender. For the past twenty years, historians and scholars in women’s studies, such as Karen Blair, Anne Firor Scott, and Deborah Gray White, have emphasized the political importance of the women’s club movement. -

It is not intended as a serious attempt to pro duce a coat-of-arms, but merely as a pleasing combina tion of significant symbols. The eagle represents the wildnative beauty of the local ity, and also the centering of national interest at the Ferry. The Stevens cabin is a reminder of the conquest of ' the wilderness by rugged early settlers. The foliage is an authentic drawing of the rare Asplenium totleri, found i only at Harpers Ferry. The saltire is formed of Hall's rifle, manufactured at Ha11’sRifle Works at the Ferry from 1820to 1861,and the Minie rifle, which for a short time was made at Harpers Ferry. The fess of railroad track is reminiscent of an exciting period in the Ferry’s history, when the B&0 raced the (3850 Canal to bring transportation to this important point. The millstone stands for the early Harper mill, and the milling and manufacturing interests concentrated at one time on the Island of Virginius. D. Cornell University 2010 This dissertation examines the role of Oberlin (the northern Ohio town and its organically connected college of the same name) in the antislavery struggle. It traces the antislavery origins and development of this Western “hot-bed of abolitionism,” and establishes Oberlin—the community, faculty, students, and alumni—as comprising the core of the antislavery movement in the West and one of the most influential and successful groups of abolitionists in antebellum America. Within two years of its founding, Oberlin’s founders had created a teachers’ college and adopted nearly the entire student body of Lane Seminary, who had been dismissed for their advocacy of immediate abolition. Oberlin became the first institute of higher learning to admit men and women of all races. America's most famous revivalist (Charles Grandison Finney) was among its new faculty as were a host of outspoken proponents of immediate emancipation and social reform.
