The ‘Speak Out for Support’ (SOS-VICS) project Maribel Del Pozo-Triviño | Doris Fernandes del Pozo [email protected] | [email protected] University of Vigo | University of Santiago de Compostela Recibido: 12/01/2018 | Revisado: 18/06/2018 | Aceptado: 10/07/2018 Abstract The academic community is showing keen interest in Public Service Interpreting (PSI) due to its importance in ensuring fair treatment and human rights’ protection in an increasingly mobile world population. The importance of good interpreter training and provision of pro- fessional services is therefore an essential requisite for ensuring quality language mediation. PSI in gender violence (GV) settings is one such service that needs close attention. Commu- nication of public service agents with foreign victims in the different areas (courts, police, forensic medicine, etc.) and stages of GV assistance involves specific features, and therefore the need for specialised training. Speak Out for Support (SOS-VICS) is an EU funded pro- ject that has created resources to provide specialised training for interpreters assisting GV victims. The project first ascertained the communication needs of all stakeholders (service providers, victims and interpreters) and then prepared a set of resources aimed at enhancing such communication. This paper addresses service providers’ perceptions of the training needs of interpreters and presents the main topics raised, such as specific knowledge on GV and of the field (legal, medical, etc.), understanding of the gender perspective or manage- ment of ethics, trauma and stress issues. Giv- en the medium’s technological, institutional, economic and aesthetic evolution, various scholars have probed and explored its forms of quality, focusing especially on the US scenario, a notable forerunner and leader in the development and international distribution of TV shows. Applied to the American industry, this ever-evolving definition has some recurrent features that make it a sort of “super-genre”, a label for TV series that share some elements of “prestige”. Concentrating on the US scenario, where nowadays “quality” mainly tends to be a label for cable series, this paper aims to identify those prestige features and to answer the question: is there such a thing as quality network television in a cable-dominated market? After establishing a theoretical framework by tracing how the notion of quality television has evolved, the article focuses on three contemporary case studies: CBS’s The Good Wife, The CW’s Jane the Virgin and Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. We see how these three series share some aesthetic and narrative tropes that exploit broadcast television’s weaknesses and restrictions to appeal to a certain upscale audience, resulting in critical acclaim and awards. In conclusion, we argue that several characteristics of quality cable television can be ap- plied to a wave of network television productions that, although based on the standard formats of broadcast storytelling, are critically comparable to more acclaimed shows, ultimately fitting into the prestige series super-genre.

The website of the Council on Undergraduate Research lists more than 200 undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/resources/students/undergraduate_journals/). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and others are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Harvard Political Review). The Elon Journal focuses on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communications. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The first issue was published in spring 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles in the journal may be downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission for non- commercial purposes as long as the author and source are properly cited. Beltrán The ABC Family cable network has become a leader in television for the millennial audience through a strategy of increased diversity on screen and an emphasis on complexity in family life. These goals have both been aided by representing Latina/o characters in the network’s flagship series: The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Pretty Little Liars, Switched at Birth, and The Fosters. In this thesis I engage in industrial, textual, and discourse analysis of these series, finding that Latina/o representation is increasing in both quantity and quality as network executives and producers attempt to appeal to the ethnically diverse millennial generation. These attempts, however, are not perfect. This project pinpoints a span of time in which ABC Family shifts towards more Latina/o inclusion both on-screen and behind the camera.
