Second, being nearly a century old, the university has quite a history. But, students today can and are still adding to that history in many differ- ent ways. While classes can be difficult, students should put forth their best efforts to make good grades. But, they should not do this because they have to, but should do it to prove to themselves they can accomplish something great. Also, school is not just about learning information from a book, but also meeting new people and learning new ideas from them. There will be times when people do not agree, but learning to get along, even when not in agreement, is important. A person’s mark on their world is very important whether it is at college, at work or in their relationships with other people. What a person says and does is what makes them who they are. So, while students should have fun while they are in college, they should remember to do their best and leave behind the best history they can. This editorial is written by David Reed and reflects The Southeastern staff’s collective opinion.

COURTESY PHOTO/MSN MOVIES Dark Knight delivers with top performances in summer blockbuster

By Quiency Brannan Staff writer “Who’s afraid of the big black bat?” That question rever- berated from Jim Carrey’s performance as the Riddler in 1995’s “Batman Forever” and has made a great prescience for the summer 2008 movie roster. With the “Dark Knight” speeding on as the mega hit of the year, we are finding other movies dreading the bat, to say the least. Starring Christian Bale as the dark knight, this movie is action-packed. Giving us the memorable and psychotically fascinating performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, the “Dark Knight” delivers the classic Batman many will remember from childhood comics. Picking up from 2005’s “Batman Begins,” this time we find that Batman and newly elected district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart, “Thank You for Smoking”) have begun a vicious campaign to rid the streets of Gotham city of thugs and mobsters. Unfortunately, Batman’s per- formance has made other theatrically inclined rouges appear. Namely the Joker. Chris Nolan (director, “Batman Begins”), weaves a tale of intrigue and satisfying disarray as the Joker (Ledger) takes to robbing and killing in a spree that is most definite- ly anarchy. Add in the fact that the mob and various other Bookstore Corner dissidents seek their own agendas, and there becomes this incredible mosaic. This is one of Ledger’s final performances, a fact that From the Barnes and Noble Campus Bookstore has tailed this film since his death in January. Is alcoholism inherited? Research shows that the risk for developing alcoholism runs in families. The genes a person inherits partially explain this pattern, but lifestyle is also a factor. Remember: Risk is not destiny. Just because alcoholism tends to run in families doesn't mean that a child of an alcoholic parent will automatically become an alcoholic too. Some people develop alcoholism even though no one in their family has a drinking problem. And not all children of alcoholic families become alcoholics. Knowing you are at risk is important, because then you can take steps to protect yourself from devel- oping problems with alcohol. Can alcoholism be cured? No, alcoholism cannot be cured at this time. Even if an alcoholic hasn't been drinking for a long time, he or she can still suffer a relapse. Not drinking is the safest course for most people with alcoholism. Can alcoholism be treated? Yes. Alcoholism treatment pro- grams use both counseling and medications to help a person stop drinking. One thing is clear, the longer a person abstains from alcohol, the more likely he or she will be able to stay sober. Do you have to be an alco- holic to experience problems? Mementos sought for SE centennial

Southeastern will be cele- brating its centennial in 2009 with a number of special events. The Southeastern Centennial Steering Committee is currently col- lecting artifacts and memora- bilia to display during the Centennial Year celebration. Examples include early letter jackets, postcards, beanies, athletic uniforms, band uni- forms, early yearbooks, class rings and pins. The committee would also like copies of early diplomas, certificates, scrapbooks, event programs, books writ- ten by alumni or faculty, early medals or trophies, and cheerleading megaphones and uniforms. Anyone who has items for loan to the University for dis- play is asked to contact Sharon Morrison at 580-745- 3172. In addition, the University will publish a centennial his- tory book next year. Anyone with historic photos for pos- sible inclusion in the book is asked to contact Alan Burton at 580-745-2731. Sports Page 6 The Southeastern Thursday, August 21, 2008
