  • The Science of Sound/Audio
22 - The Science of Sound/Audio . Leveraging Sound Branding Posted on August 22, 2013 by admin ―I should have known, sound branding! Sound Branding is common sense. Quite simply, we are wired to go. It is said that the human ear reacts to certain sounds more than others. This is sound branding. Sound, most notably music, triggers emotions, auditory pleasures, memories and associations. Sound branding is a multi-sensory form of communication and a holistic corporate model, which drives perception. It also creates attention with familiar associations. It also differentiates from the dross of typical advertising media. The benefit of this auditory effect is that it enhances brand identity, loyalty, and thus increases sales. Take the memorable Intel or Coca-Cola jingles as key examples. Harley Davidson‘s distinctive and trademarked motorcycle exhaust sound, and Kellogg‘s investment in the power of auditory stimulus with its cereal crunching demonstrates strategic marketing through sound branding. Firms of this sort understand sound branding delivers personality. The advent of digital media and devices increases the communication of the sound branding experience. Sampling of sound branding through audio identity should be appreciated by listening to the following examples:can be viewed and heard here. • Bentley Motor Cars developed ―The new sound of Bentley‖ — a stirring and thunderous soundtrack and the prelude to a potent new Bentley driving experience. • Hip boutique hotels such as Puro Hotel in Mallorca, whose beach bar has been voted one of the world‘s 50 best by CNN Travel, surrounds you everywhere with lounge/chill-out genre of music compiled by its in-house DJ ‒ whether you open their website, choose to listen to their on-line steaming player, purchase a CD, relax by the pool sipping a passion fruit mojito or come nightfall, gather around to dance to their house tunes.

“MORE THAN JUST A PIECE IN THEIR GAMES”: AGENCY AND THE DOCILE BODY IN THE HUNGER GAMES AND REALITY TELEVISION by KATHLEEN DENISON Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON December 2014 Copyright © by Kathleen Denison 2014 All Rights Reserved ii Acknowledgements My deepest gratitude goes out to the chair of my committee, Penny Ingram, for being an incredible person and an incredible professor. She selflessly saved me from my initial thesis “crisis” and constantly believed in me when I wasn’t sure I could believe in myself. Dr. Ingram’s patience, humor, knowledge and stories have been an incredible gift throughout this process. I don’t know if this thesis would have been possible without the shared laughs and compassionate words of understanding that introduced light into some occasionally dark times. I am also grateful to Ashley Miller for her kindness and patience throughout this process. And to Jackie Stodnick for ensuring that my writing best represents my abilities and knowledge. Finally, thank you to my family and friends. This thesis would have never materialized without the many wonderful people that listened to my often incomprehensible ramblings, that let me vent and cry and stress aloud, that offered comfort and accountability during the actual writing, and that always helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. A special thank you to my mom for listening to me talk about The Hunger Games for hours and for helping me focus when clarity seemed like the least obtainable thing possible.

  • A Call for Rethinking Cultural Studies
BEYOND CELEBRATION: A CALL FOR RETHINKING CULTURAL STUDIES Carolyn Lea A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2007 Committee: Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor Dr. Nancy C. Patterson Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Ewart Skinner © 2007 Carolyn Lea All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor This is a polemical dissertation which seeks to serve as an intervention into the theoretical debates and tensions within cultural studies. These debates, which have taken place over the last few decades, have centered on the populist bent within cultural studies, the turn away from the concerns of political economy, and the influence of French theories that emphasize signification, play, and relativism. At stake in these debates is our way of understanding the world and imagining it differently. I argue that the celebratory direction found in much of the work by cultural studies scholars in which resistance, subversion and transgression are located in all things popular has led to an expressivist politics which lacks explanatory power and is symptomatic of a loss of political will. This dissertation critiques three particular directions that exemplify the celebratory turn: claims regarding transgression; claims regarding audience activity; and celebratory accounts of consumption. Chapter one provides an exposition of the debates that have plagued cultural studies, laying the ground for later arguments. Chapter two provides an introduction to reality television which is enlisted as a cultural symptom through which to interrogate weaknesses in theoretical positions (in chapters three through five) adopted by cultural studies scholars and strengths in alternative theoretical legacies.
