Gemeinsam haben sie die Songs geschrieben und zusammen live im Studion aufgenommen. Die band-typischen dreistimmigen Gesangsharmonien werden kontrastiert durch Loops, die tatsächlich vom Tonband kommen und von Hand geschnitten und geklebt wurden. Ein ganz analoges Experiment also, durchgeführt zusammen mit dem Produzenten Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Kacey Musgraves, The War On Drugs). Im Grunde genommen haben Taylor Rice (Gesang Gitarre), Kelcey Ayer (Gesang, Keyboards), Ryan Hahn (Gesang, Gitarre), Matt Frazier (Drums) und Nik Ewing (Bass) wieder gearbeitet wie im Jahr 2009, als sie ihre Debütplatte „Gorilla Manor“ herausgebracht haben. Der Unterschied war, dass ihre langjährige Verbindung, gewachsen durch ihre Zeit im Studio und auf Tour vor Millionen von Fans weltweit, viel enger, vertrauter und weiser ist als damals. Nach drei gefeierten Alben wollten die Kalifornier wieder zurück an den Start ihrer gemeinsamen Geschichte. Natürlich konnten sie nicht wieder zusammen in ein Haus ziehen und Tag und Nacht an den Stücken arbeiten. So mieteten sie ein großes Warehouse, im dem sie oft bis in die frühen Morgenstunden schrieben, jammten und spielten und sich gegenseitig zu Höchstleistungen antrieben, bis aus diesem enorm kreativen Prozess ein neues Album erwachsen war. „Wir waren schon immer eine kooperative und demokratische Band“, erzählt Gitarrist Rice von dieser Zeit, „aber so offen und gemeinschaftlich haben wir noch nie zusammengearbeitet, und auch noch nie so eng mit einem Produzenten.
