TANGLEWOOD The Berkshire Festival In August 1934, a group of music-loving summer residents of the Berkshires organized a series of three outdoor concerts at Interlaken, to be given by members of the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Henry Hadley. The venture was so successful that the promoters incorporated the Berkshire Symphonic Festival and repeated the experiment during the next summer. The Festival Committee then invited Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra to take part in the following year's concerts. The orchestra's Trustees accepted, and on 13 August 1936 the Boston Symphony gave its first concerts in the Berkshires (at Holmwood, a former Vanderbilt estate, later the Center at Foxhollow). The series again consisted of three concerts and was given under a large tent, drawing a total of nearly 15,000 people. In the winter of 1936, Mrs. Gorham Brooks and Miss Mary Aspinwall Tappan offered Tanglewood, the Tappan family estate, with its buildings and 210 acres of lawns and meadows, as a gift to Koussevitzky and the orchestra. The offer was gratefully accepted, and on 5 August 1937 the Festival's largest crowd so far assembled under a tent for the first Tanglewood concert, an all-Beethoven program. At the all-Wagner concert which opened the 1937 festival's second weekend, rain and thunder twice interrupted the performance of the Rienzi Overture and necessitated the omission altogether of the Siegfried Idyll, music too delicate to be heard through the downpour. At the intermission, Miss Gertrude Robinson Smith, one of the festival's founders, made a fundraising appeal for the building of a permanent structure. The appeal was broadened by means of a printed circular handed out at the two remaining concerts, and within a short time enough money had been raised to begin active planning for a "music pavilion." Plans for the Shed were drawn up by the eminent architect Eliel Saarinen, and, as modified by Josef Franz of Stockbridge, who also directed construction, it was completed on 16 June 1938, a month ahead of schedule. Seven weeks later, Serge Koussevitzky led the inaugural concert, which featured a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. By 1941, the Theatre-Concert Hall, the Chamber Music Hall, and several small studios — all part of the Berkshire Music Center, which had begun operations the preceding year — were finished, and the festival had so expanded its activities and its reputation for excellence that it attracted nearly 100,000 visitors. Today Tanglewood annually draws close to a quarter of a million visitors; in addition to the twenty-four regular concerts of the Boston Symphony, there are weekly chamber music concerts, "Prelude" concerts and open rehearsals, the annual Festival of Contemporary Music, and almost daily concerts by the gifted young musicians of the Berkshire Music Center. The Boston Pops performs each summer, and the festival also includes a series of concerts by popular artists. The season offers not only a vast quantity of music but also a vast range of musical forms and 1 styles, all of it presented with a regard for artistic excellence that makes the festival unique. The Berkshire Music Center Tanglewood is much more than a pleasant, outdoor, summer concert hall; it is also the site of one of the most influential centers for advanced musical study in the United States. Here, the Berkshire Music Center, now celebrating its fortieth anniversary, and which has been maintained by the Boston Symphony Orchestra ever since its establishment under the leadership of Serge Koussevitzky in 1940, provides a wide range of specialized training and experience for young musicians from all over the B world.

Zervos, Twelve-Tone Technique and Modality… Twelve-Tone Technique and Modality in Nikos Skalkottas’s Music George Zervos Abstract In Nikos Skalkottas’s compositional output, the use of modality through the folk tra- dition, is not limited to some of the tonal works, such as the 36 Greek Dances, but it also extends to the strictly or freely twelve-tone works; indeed, this is the case throughout the composer’s creative life. Given the changing character of the ways in which this folk tradition is incorporated into a twelve-tone and, in general, an atonal environ- ment, we chose two works from different periods, in order to show the modes in which the composer manages to connect the various aspects of the twelve-tone with modal- ity: these are the first movement of Sonatina No.2 for violin and piano (1929), and the first movement of Petite Suite No.1 for solo violin and piano (1946). More specifically, in the first case, we will show the ways in which the prime row is transformed into a diatonic- chromatic-like modality, and in the second case we will discuss the function of the combination of two complementary hexachords through which two sets are produced.

Overture Berkshire Festival, and these excerpts were last played by II. Scherzo the Boston Symphony with Erich Leinsdorf in 1962. III. Nocturne The instrumentation calls for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, IV. Wedding March 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, tuba, timpani, cymbals, triangle and strings. Sibelius: Tapiola, Tone Poem Op. 112 Youthful miracles are seldom repeated. Mendelssohn composed his Overture to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' Intermission at seventeen (1826), with a miraculous deftness and deli- cacy, an elfin imagination and humor then unmatched. Yet, near the end of his life (1843), Mendelssohn did match the Sibelius: Symphony No. 6 Op. 104 miracle. He was invited by the King of Prussia to compose incidental music for a Berlin production of Ein Sommernachts- I. Allegro molto moderato traum. His youthful enthusiasm for Shakespeare surged II. Allegretto moderato back. With the most felicitous ease he wove the early III. Poco vivace themes into new pieces and ideas flowed with the Roman- Allegro molto N.

    IGNAT SOLZHENITSYN 2019-20 SHORT BIO {206 WORDS} IGNAT SOLZHENITSYN Recognized as one of today's most gifted artists, and enjoying an active career as both conductor and pianist, Ignat Solzhenitsyn's lyrical and poignant interpretations have won him critical acclaim throughout the world. Principal Guest Conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Ignat Solzhenitsyn has recently led the symphonies of Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Seattle, and Toronto, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Czech National Symphony, as well as the Mariinsky Orchestra and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. He has partnered with such world-renowned soloists as Richard Goode, Gary Graffman, Gidon Kremer, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Garrick Ohlsson, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Mitsuko Uchida. Graduate College Faculty Representative ii ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation provides information on how to develop the young dramatic soprano, specifically through more concentrated focus on the breath. Proper breathing is considered the single most important skill a singer will learn, but its methodology continues to mystify multitudes of singers and voice teachers. Voice professionals often write treatises with a chapter or two devoted to breathing, whose explanations are extremely varied, complex or vague. Young dramatic sopranos, whose voices are unwieldy and take longer to develop are at a particular disadvantage for absorbing a solid vocal technique. First, a description, classification and brief history of the young dramatic soprano is discussed along with a retracing of breath methodologies relevant to the young dramatic soprano’s development.
