Since 2006, NCM Fathom and The Metropolitan Opera have partnered to bring classic operatic performances to movie screens across America live with The Met: Live in HD series. The first Live in HD event was seen in 56 theaters in December 2006. Fathom has since expanded its participating theater footprint which now reaches more than 500 movie theaters in the United States. Distilled from Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Otello is an intense chamber-like piece that explores all the problems of the world, concentrated in the lives of the three main characters: Otello, Desdemona and Iago, three of Verdi’s most demanding roles, both vocally and dramatically. Internationally celebrated South Korean tenor Yonghoon Lee will, for the first time in his career, take on the titular role of war hero Otello. In his review of Lee’s 2016 Met performance in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Dr Neil Kurtzman labelled Lee’s voice “exceptional” and “large” and predicted the role of Otello would be in his future, noting Lee has a “beautiful spinto voice that he uses with great skill and sensitivity; it’s bright and rings”1. Having performed at prestigious opera houses all over the world, Lee debuted with Opera Australia in 2013 in the lead role of Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca and has since returned to Australia multiple times, most recently to play Don Jose in Georges Bizet’s Carmen early last year (before it closed prematurely due to COVID 19). The incomparable Karah Son, whose captivating performance made OA’s Madama Butterfly a must-see in 2019, is expected to give a performance that is just as compelling in her long-awaited debut as Desdemona. -

Of Operatic Love Courtesan
E. Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) Finally to the first act of La traviata (1854), a highly unusual work in Verdi’s output in that it treats a contemporary subject taken from a play currently playing on French stages. Violetta Valéry is a Paris Vagaries of Operatic Love courtesan. Knowing that she is dying of tuberculosis, she is set on going out in a froth of champagne. But then she meets an admirer, Alfredo Germont, who tries to persuade her to give up this life and move with him to the peace of the country. As we discover in Act Two, she will do so, but not without ending Act One in an aria that is the most remarkable internal examination of the feelings of a woman 11 in love yet seen on the opera stage. The innovative production by Willy Decker was first seen in Salzburg 12 in 2005 and later brought to the Met. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.
