4 MESSAGE FROM JOHN DAVIES, CHAIR OF THE SCA The financial year of the charity has just ended and by the time you read this we will have held the An- nual Meeting. It therefore seems an opportune time to give a summary of our financial position to those of you not able to make the meeting. The headlines are that during the year ending 31 January 2017 we had a total income of £109,670 and total expenses of £99,330 so we had a surplus of just over £10,000, compared with a surplus of just over £19,000 the previous year, due to the success of the Festival in 2015. So we had a pretty good year last year and this was despite spending a further net (after grants) £10,000 on maintenance/ improvements. However, this surplus of £10,000 would once again have been a substantial loss without £23,600 from fundraising, books (on wall and in hall), your generous donations and grants. These surpluses have been essential in building funds to cover the projected cost of over £30,000 that will be necessary to pay for the much-needed refurbishment of the entrance and foyer areas, which we hope to be undertaken during the coming weeks. The main items of note financially were :- • SCAN advertising income remained broadly unchanged after rises of 31% and 30% in previous years and despite increased print costs made a reasonable surplus. Our thanks to all our advertisers and to the army of volunteers who deliver the SCAN to every house in Saltford. • Fundraising last year raised over £11,400 and this coming year we hope the 80 plus events during the Festival will once again be enthusiastically supported. A huge thank you to the merry band of volun- teers who help to put all these events on and to all of you for supporting so well during the year. • Reg and Jill Williams, in a new initiative, donated all the money from books on their wall (24 High Street) and in the Hall and last year they were able to raise just over £2000 for the SCA. • In terms of expenses, gas and electric were up a small bit, despite us taking a number of initiatives to reduce useage. During the last year we spent a further £17,300 on maintenance and improvements at the Hall, bringing the total over the last 7 years to an amazing £147,000. The main item last year was the completion of the transformation of the stage lighting to LEDs which was greatly helped by a grant from Frances Haeber- ling through the BANES Ward Councillor’s Initiative. Other non-regular items were :- • Repairs to door entry system • Stage rigging and electrical checks • Replacement of paying slabs between Hall and Tennis Courts • Saltford Hall sign • Panto container base • Architect fees connected with foyer refurbishment As well as the grant mention above from BANES WCI, we are also very grateful to grants from Saltford Parish Council towards the cost of producing SCAN and towards the cost of putting on the forthcoming Festival. Last year we also received a grant from Quartet towards the cost of installing destratification fans in the Main Hall and Stage (see below) and a grant from Waitrose (green tokens!). During the coming year we will be running our regular cafes and bars alongside other events and organizing another 9 day Festival in June. We will be using the money raised and what we have in the bank already, to progress further improvements this coming year including the total refurbishment of the entrance foyer as highlighted in the last SCAN. Already in this new financial year we have also spent just over £3,000 on the destratification fans that we hope will pay back in a couple of years and further architects fees in respect of the foyer refurbishment. So just in summary, we have over the last 7 years spent £60,000 on maintenance items, £87,000 on improvements, making a total of £147,000. This has been substantially funded from raising over £85,000 from fundraising activities and £54,000 in grants and bequests. Many thanks for your invaluable support over the years and in the future to ensuring that Saltford Hall remains a much loved community focus point. 5 6HOHFWHG(YHQWVLQ$SULO

Bath & North East Somerset Council Chairman’s Community Awards 2016/17 There were over 100 nominations for the B&NES Chairman’s community awards from across the B&NES area. Saltford was represented among the nominations made by individuals and organisations. Diane Hooper was nominated for a lifetime achievement award in Guiding. Mike Knight was nominated in the volunteer of the year category for his service at Greenhill House, a home providing a range of services for adults with physical disabilities. The Saltford Brass Mill Project volunteer group was nominated in the volunteer team of the year category. Although not winning one of the Chairman’s awards, all the Saltford nominations received certificates from Cllr Alan Hale, B&NES Chairman, in a presentation at the Guildhall, Bath. Cllr Hale thanked all the volunteers for helping to make the communities in B&NES a better place to live. JACK’S DAY Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die suddenly from undiagnosed heart conditions. A lot of people in the UK may not be aware of this but for people in Keynsham and Saltford sadly we know this fact all to well. It will be 8 years this August since Jack Boutlon passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condi- tion which rocked the local community and left a big hole in all our lives. Every year family, friends and the local community gather together at the Saltford sports club to cel- ebrate the life of Jack Boulton and raise money for the charity CRY. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death. They offer bereavement support to families affected by young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) and promotes heart screening programmes as well as funding medical research. Over the last 8 years we have raised a tremendous amount of money for CRY. Money raised last year was used to fund a screening day for the local community. Preparations for Jack’s Day 2017 are well underway and we expect it to be the biggest and best yet. It will be held on Friday 26th May 2017 at Saltford Sports Club starting at 19:00 and finishing late into the night. This year there will be a football match between Saltford AFC V Keynsham cricket club (kick off 18:45). There will also be Live music, DJ, BBQ, Raffle, bar and auction (previous prizes included an Audi experi- ence, signed Manchester united shirt, signed rugby shirt and other signed sports memorabilia). Obviously this event cannot be a successful without the support of the Keynsham and Saltford commu- nity….If anyone can help on the day or donate raffle prizes we would be very grateful. This is an open event…we encourage you to invite friends and family to support this amazing cause and continue making this event a roaring success. All proceeds from the day with go to CRY. We look forward to seeing you on the 26th May.

18 DONATION APPEAL UPDATE In the last SCAN we encouraged you to support financially the continued availability to walkers, runners and horse riders of the 4.5km of permissive paths to the west and south of Saltford. I’m pleased to say that since launching that appeal last time, we have now raised (including Gift Aid) £1200 towards our target of £3000. You have also generously donated a further £540 for the work of the SCA. A huge thank you to those who have already donated.

In order for the permissive paths to remain open next year and beyond, the SCA needs specific donations to raise £3000 and we are pleased that we are already 40% of the way there this year. It needs just another 60 people to donate an average of £25, plus Gift Aid, to reach our target. This is a small price to pay for continuing to enjoy over 4.5km of footpaths.

Without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs, the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops.

If you regularly use any of these paths and wish to donate and don’t still have your donation envelope, then please either pick one up from the foyer of the Hall or go to our website where a specific section can be found at http://www.saltfordhall.co.uk/Permissive_paths.html This page provides a link to a downloadable Gift Aid form and details of how to make a donation including via Paypal. It also allows you to specifically indicate how you wish your donation to be used. We will provide a further update in the next SCAN.

SALTFORD PANTOS ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE OF: Yet again Saltford Panto club has had another stampeding success in our latest production. The hard work from all the dedicated cast and crew paid off with the creation of not only a week of entertainment but an amazing atmosphere within the club! It has been a great privilege to work with everyone in the club this year, they have made the entire process rewarding and enjoyable for all involved. Once again, the club thanks the support of the fantastic Saltford hall and all its staff, affiliated groups and volunteers. A special thanks to those groups and volunteers who helped us in the set up and running of our pantomime. Of course, the club is also thankful to the residents of Saltford, and surrounding areas as well, who year after year come to our pantomimes helping us celebrate the hard work of the groups cast and crew (and hopefully they enjoy a good giggle as well!). Our next production will be Dick Whittington -Saviour of Old London Town, and we are very excited to announce that it will again be a new script for the club! We very much look forward to the auditions coming up in September this year, as we are always on the lookout for new recruits to join our merry band! If you think you might be interested, either as a performer or a member of our talented backstage crew, keep an eye out for our posters in future SCANs and like our Facebook page. 22 23 Saltford Festival 2017

The nine-day Saltford Festival has become a village tradition and is now in its fourth incarnation. This year’s programme is as varied as ever, including music, dance, poetry, drama, comedy, exhibitions, talks and guided walks, competitions, and, of course, food and drink, with some new events appearing for the first time. As always, the aim is to include as many local contributors as possible.

For this Festival we are excited to welcome “Admiral Kelly”, a former resident of Saltford House! He can be recognised on the Old Village Day (11 June), in full uniform, standing outside his old home alongside the new plaque erected in his memory. He will be willing to answer questions and to talk about his achievements as well as life in his time.

Another major addition will be the involvement of Saltford Sports Club with Super Saturday Afternoon on Saturday June 10th from 1.00pm into the evening. We are promised, among other things, Battle Archery, Volley Ball, an exhibition of Vintage Scooters, music, and a screening of the England v Scotland football match! New to the Festival will also be a Community Cinema showing of the classic film Singin’ in the Rain (13 June) and a Country & Western Afternoon Tea Dance (16 June).

Tried and tested events are, of course, included. The Festival would not survive without its Quiz, the Country Market, the Jazz evening, the Choir, the walks, talks, dance, song, competitions and over-eating! Bob Webb is willing to cross the Severn Bridge to give us an evening of his inimitable humour (16 June) supported by local singer Nicki Jefferis and a two-course dinner. Our own John Isaacs will leave his audience spellbound after his Night of Magic and Mystery (14 June) and Saltford Drama Club will entertain with a Murder Mystery Evening (17 June). Many other local organisations and helpers are taking part to provide a most entertaining week.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, our local MP, has supported Saltford Festival since its birth in 2011. He will join us again this year on Old Village Day, as well as being one of the five speakers in the popular, weekday series of lunchtime talks in St Mary's Church Hall.

The nine days will conclude with a wonderful finale at Saltford Golf Club on the afternoon and evening of Sunday 18 June.

We are now starting to regularly post more information on all the planned events on our Saltford Festival Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Saltford-Festival-110300772368555/.You can also visit our website at www.saltfordfestival.org.uk

As you will see, most events are free, but some are ticketed. These tickets will go on sale on 1 April at Saltford Post Office (Monday to Saturday), Saltford Hall (weekday mornings), Davies & Way, Saltford (Monday to Saturday), the Bar at Saltford Golf Club (every day), or via [email protected].

HELP is needed. Whatever your skills please come forward - your village needs you! Please register your interest at [email protected] or ring the Office on 01225 874081. Your offers will be taken up in early April.

SALTFORD SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB

Two months since our last bulletin, during which time we have held our Club Triples Competition, which was won by Alan Durber, Ron Kent and skip, Kath Crabb. We hadn’t taken delivery of our Shield in time for the presentations at our A.G.M., but we managed with a cardboard cut-out which caused a few laughs!

Avon County ran their Annual Triples Competition just prior to our Triples and I am very happy to report that one of the teams from Saltford played very well and won the Title for the year. They were Chris Greatorex, who had never played at the Bristol venue before, Lyn Dorey and Joan Hamblin.

Early in March we ran our Invitation Mixed Fours tournament. Clubs came from a variety of locations, Ilchester, Wells, Wiltshire, Weston –super-mare, to name but a few. Clubs played a total of five games each, with lunch, teas & coffees accompanied by delicious home-made cakes between times. A happy, but competitive, day was had by all. The winners were the team from Woolhope, (their Skip was a very good lady player who is also the Captain of Hereford County Squad). Four teams ended their matches with eight points and the result was decided by the highest shot score.

Why not join us, learn a different skill and meet a few new people. We play on Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday afternoons at Saltford Hall. For more information contact Joan Hamblin, our Secretary, on 01225 872389 Or visit our website www saltfordshortmatbowlsclub.co.uk

42 Keynsham Light Opera Group presents “9 TO 5 - THE MUSICAL” Broadlands Academy, Keynsham Tuesday 25th April to Saturday 29th April 2017 Evenings at 7:30pm Saturday matinee at 2:30pm The triple award-winning Keynsham Light Opera Group are proud to present this hilarious musical, based on the 1980 hit movie starring Dolly Parton (who wrote the music and lyrics). It is great fun for the whole family, with toe tapping tunes. This show is sure to entertain.

Pushed to the boiling point by their boss, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. They conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do — even in a man’s world. Set in the late 1970s, 9 TO 5 - THE MUSICAL is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. Outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic, 9 TO 5 - THE MUSICAL is about teaming up and taking care of business

The show is directed by the multi award-winning director Scott Rogers (Artistic Director of Zenith Youth Theatre Company). Lee Tesdale is Musical Director and Tracey English is our Choreographer.

Tickets at only £10 are available from the Box Office. Telephone Tracey on 07580 259757 or email: [email protected] or any member of the society. Concessions (Senior citizens) are available for £8 for every show and for children under 14, tickets cost £5. For any group of 10, one ticket will be free.

Visit our web site www.klogs.co.uk for more details and to book tickets on-line.

Annual Parish Meeting 4th April 2017

Everyone is welcome at the annual Parish Meeting. This year we are again presenting our Community Awards at the meeting. Winners will get £60 for their chosen Saltford group, project, cause or charity. There will also be a review of the Parish Council’s year, opportunities for questions and comments, as well as (we hope) Fair Trade refreshments and an opportunity to socialise. The meeting will be followed by a regular meeting of the Parish Council Planning Committee.

Grant to Saltford Brass Mill

The Parish Council has made a grant of £510 to Saltford Brass Mill to install non-slip decking strips on the access footbridge for the safety of visitors.

Traffic volumes on the A4 at Saltford

Below are the weekday average total number of vehicles in 24 hours on the A4 at Saltford 1998-2016 (both directions combined). There has been a drop of 12% in the total number of vehicles travelling on the A4 Bath Road since the peak of 2002. Very little traffic passes along the A4 between 8pm in the evening and 6am in the morning. Not surprisingly, traffic volumes normally peak daily between 7am and 8am and between 4pm and 6pm. On Fridays the morning traffic builds up more slowly.

Dear Friends

A warm welcome awaits you at any of our churches across the benefice this Easter. All the details of our services can be found on our poster opposite. We wish you a Happy Easter and look forward to celebrating with you.

Messy Easter (Saltford) - is on Sunday April 2nd in St Mary’s Church hall from 4-6pm. All are welcome.

Memorial Garden in St Mary’s Churchyard - this is still ongoing but by the time this is printed we hope that permission will have been granted and work begun on creating the garden.

Ladies you are invited to a ladies brunch on Saturday 8th July at 9am in St Mary’s Church Hall. Tickets £5 are available from the Parish Office. The Revd Joanna Jepson will be speaking on fashion, faith and identity. Joanna is an Anglican priest, who in 2006 set up the first chaplaincy in the British Fashion Industry based at the London College of Fashion. Here she created The Empty Hanger, a project working with secondary school students exploring themes such as fashion, faith and identity. Before ordination Joanna was a barmaid, worked with teenage victims of drug and domestic abuse and lived in a Welsh convent with 13 contemplative nuns and monks. Now based in Wells, with her husband and son, Joanna continues to serve as a priest. She writes and presents for BBC Radio 4 and Radio 2, and regularly speaks at conferences & retreats on body image, spirituality and fashion.

A Time to Remember - All Saints Corston will be hosting another service, where everyone has the opportunity to remember someone they have loved and lost. Names will be read out and candles lit as a symbol of our prayers. Sunday 23rd April at All Saints Church Corston at 630pm, refreshments to follow.

Our next Afternoon Tea for those who have recently been bereaved and would like support and company on a Sunday afternoon - is on May 28th in St Mary’s Church Hall 2-4pm. All are welcome.

No one should go to bed hungry - In 2016 the number of food parcels which were distributed by Keynsham foodbank doubled from 2015, and is set to increase. We are hoping to have a distribution centre in St Mary’s Church Hall - if you would like to be involved and can volunteer a couple of hours a month, or perhaps you or someone you know may be in need of support from the foodbank - then please get in touch with Daile.

….. and looking forward to celebrating the Saltford Festival with you, through our Flower festival, Songs of Praise and Open Gardens. For information about anything mentioned above, or anything else, please get in touch. Blessings, Daile [email protected] or 01225 872275
