4 SALTFORD FESTIVAL 2015

The dates for Saltford festival in 2015 are Saturday 13th June - Sunday 21st June Now may be the time to plan an early summer holiday or to stick around and take part! Planning for the festival has just begun and requests have been coming in from societies and from individuals who want to play a part. More new ideas are always welcome as are offers of all types of help.

This is always an exciting venture and one which, in 2011 and in 2013 brought the village together and allowed all age groups to enjoy a week of continuing and vari- ous activity. Money was raised from the previous festivals for several local groups and for The Community Association, towards upkeep and improvement of Saltford Hall. Does the Saltford Festival 2015 need a theme? Who should open the festival? Jill Williams With offers of help, ideas or a chosen theme email [email protected]

The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. We urgently need dog walking volunteers in Saltford who are able to offer some much needed walks for a lovely local dog a 7 year old greyhound. What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually af- fects our ability to look after our companion animals? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, and feel that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. We are always seeking new volunteers even if you can only spare an hour a week we would love to hear from you, If anyone can help please call during office hours 01736 758707 or via email [email protected] Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk Registered charity number 1134680

20 Saltford School Summer Fair The weather was kind and the sun shone for Saltford School’s annual Summer Fair on Saturday 5 July. Football Frenzy was the theme to celebrate the World Cup and the warm up began watching the England v Costa Rica match on Tuesday 24 June. Unfortunately England didn’t win but being the biggest fundraising event in the school’s calendar; this year was definitely a winner for the school as a record breaking £8500 was raised! There were lots of exciting activities on offer includ- ing firm favourites such as face painting, coconut shy, tombolas, sweet stall and tea rooms along with the more adventurous giant zig zag bouncy castle, aqua zorb- ing in the swimming pool, pony rides and an inflatable human table football game! There were penalty shoot outs, live music, a gymnastics display and crowd pleas- ing football free styling displays by Matt Minnis who then taught the children, and adults, a few tricks of their own. A big thank you to all the local companies who advertised in the programme and donated to the grand raffle along with Saltford Motors for the loan of a car filled with footballs! The whole event had a wonderful family feel and Saltford is lucky to have such a friendly and well supported school. All funds raised will be used to enhance the provision of equipment and learning tools for the children. Next year’s fair will take place on Saturday 20 June 2015 on the final weekend of Saltford Festival.

The MM was in two parts, the first act included the murder, and during the second act, the murderer was finally revealed. During the interval the audiences were fed with a two course supper, and Inheritance during this time they were asked Nasty toThings, complete Murder a quiz and also to guess who had committed the murder. 22 OTHER NEWS

Message from Jacob Rees-Mogg MP On 10th July there was a meeting of Bath and North East Somerset cabinet members to discuss the presentation of the Core Strategy to the Council. Following this discus- sion B&NES has begun to assess whether it accepts the Inspector’s recommendations thereby enabling it to formally adopt the Core Strategy. Previously, B&NES submitted its Core Strategy to the Government’s independent Inspector but unfortunately it was rejected. The Inspector’s final report, which outlined the reasons for his decision, even suggested that it could take several years for a strat- egy to be formalised. In the meantime the presumption in favour of sustainable development has been used in place of a Core Strategy which has enabled developers to exploit a number of loopholes. This has, in the past, been worrying for some local residents, especially as certain developers sought to build on greenbelt land. Some of these applications were even approved by an inspector but then had to be called in by the Secretary of State as they contravened the Government’s policy on greenbelt development. The absence of a Core Strategy has been a key issue in local planning for some time and it is potentially beneficial that the Council is on the way to securing something more solid. It will give planning applicants clear parameters but also the local authority the autonomy to make decisions for which it can be held accountable. The Government has been eager to devolve power to local authorities since 2010 as they ought to know what is best for their communities. Unfortunately, the balance B&NES has decided upon is to sacrifice part of the greenbelt to secure approval. This is not an ideal solution and greenbelt land should only have been included when it is waste ground as on the outskirts of Bath on the lower Bristol Road. It is, therefore, disappointing that the Council failed to put forward a better deal and it opens up the risk of urban sprawl from Bristol to Bath. However, at least specula- tive applications will now be robustly defendable. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Top up your oil tank in early autumn. Local charity West of England Rural Network is advising householders to top up their domestic oil tanks before expected price rises in the colder months of autumn and win- ter. The charity runs a community oil buying scheme which aims to save local people money on their oil bills by placing a collective order once a month. The charity is currently offering a limited number of FREE memberships to the scheme (normally £20) to anyone over 70 living in the West of England (Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire), thanks to funding awarded by Quartet Community Foundation. Scheme co-ordinator Jill Baker says “oil prices tend to rise in autumn and winter as 23 demand increases. By placing a single large order we can negotiate with suppliers and everyone pays less.” Members of the scheme can order as little as 500 litres, as infrequently as they choose, and still pay the negotiated price. The member oil price in July was 49.8p per litre (plus VAT at 5%). The usual annual membership fee is £20 for households, £30 for community buildings and £100 for businesses. If you are interested in joining the scheme, visit www.wern.org.uk/oil or call Jill Baker on 01275 333701.

New Phoenix Youth Theatre in Keynsham invite youngsters from Chew Valley to join Keynsham’s newly established youth theatre is inviting youngsters from the Chew Val- ley to join it’s ranks. Chair from Phoenix KYT , Rachael Abbott, said: “The group has been formed for Keyn- sham and the surrounding area, so Chew Valley youth would be very welcome indeed.” The new youth theatre, Phoenix KYT, has risen from the ashes of Keynsham Youth Theatre (KYT), which closed its doors last Easter, after 22 years. Thanks to an outcry and also a group of dedicated people Phoenix KYT opened its doors last week to a group of youngsters who wanted to be members of the new group, including 13 year old Josh, a former member of KYT, who said: “ This is great.” The new group ‘s production team is director Jo Meredith, who is also chair of Keyn- sham Light Opera Group ( KLOGS), choreographer Tracey English, who does choreog- raphy with KLOGS and is their secretary, and musical director Lee Tesdale, who is also musical director with KLOGS. Mrs Rachael Abbott, who was chair of KYT and who is now chair of Phoenix said: “All three have produced many shows for KLOGS over the past ten years. Tracey in particu- lar was a member of the original KYT and a very talented dancer from Keyford School of Dance. Jo is a solo artist in her own right and Lee is a true musical maestro.” The group’s opening night was a success, with everyone, including the twenty or so adults who turned up to help, enjoying every minute. The group aim to put on a show – ‘Be My Guest’ - in April 2015. This will feature songs from various musicals, including Les Miserables, Oliver and Mary Poppins. Rachael said : “!t’s a long road to Easter 2015 and there is sure to be some bridges to cross but I have every confidence we will arrive in style.” The group meet every Tuesday, commencing at 7pm at Broadlands School in Keyn- sham. If anyone is interested in becoming part of Phoenix KYT, or who would like to find out more, they can do so by ringing Jo on 07597 807517 or email phoernix-kyt@outlook. com

26 Saltford’s Silent Majority Against Reopening The Station

Your recent articles on this subject do not take into account the view of the majority of the residents of Saltford. We have serious concerns about the prospect of parking in the streets around the station as happens in Keynsham. The disruption to the already heavy traffic flow on the A4 at peak times and the proposal for carparks on green belt land. In addition, the burden on Council Tax payers is growing. The initial £8000 spent by B&NES on the consultants Halcrow’s report, which said there was no business case for reopening the station, since then B&NES are spending up to £100,000 on further consultants. Should this ever come into being, on such a difficult site, with trains run- ning all day, at least £10M will be the cost to our Council Tax to do the work. We have seen from the ramp at Keynsham station, that initial estimates are usually tripled on railway work. With regard to the recent consultation by B&NES it was a shambles. A questionnaire that assumed you were in favour of reopening the station. No control over who took part in the survey, I must confess to voting 3 times, twice at the meeting and once online. A more reliable view is in from the Parish Plan survey, which was properly conducted and showed 39% saying they would use the station but 45% would not, the rest with no opinion. We have in Saltford, an excellent bus system, which like the rail fares(despite the huge subsidy) is expensive for occasional journeys, but reasonable for regular users. Should the Bristol Metro system come into existence in this area, it makes much more sense to build a new park and ride station, with a side track for stopping trains. It could be served by the 665 bus for none car users. The best site would be on the land allocated for development in the new Core Strategy, near Pixash Lane, also relieving the parking pressure around Keynsham station. The time has come for the silent majority to speak out, if you would like to join us in putting the case against reopening this site on the edge of green belt, please mail to [email protected]. or write to 24 High Street.

Cllr Reg Williams Saltford Parish Councillor.

Village Walk 13 August The annual Saltford village walk takes place this year on Wednesday 13 August starting at 7.00 pm from The Shallows car park. It will last 2 – 3 hours, on footpaths with an option of going up to Kelston Tump (Round Hill). All welcome, dogs on leads please. Public Meeting 20 August - previously permissive footpaths A public meeting will be held on 20 August at 7.00 pm at Saltford Golf Club to discuss possible ways for- ward for the previously permissive paths which were recently closed. The meeting will be facilitated by the Parish Council, and all walkers, riders and anyone else with an interest in using the paths, perhaps on a subscription basis, is welcome. Footpath Maps The ‘Saltford on foot’ maps, which were available from Saltford Post Office for £1 each, have been tem- porarily removed from sale, as the information about the permissive paths is now inaccurate. St Mary’s Churchyard As part of its responsibility for the maintenance of St Mary’s churchyard, the Parish Council commis- sioned a safety inspection of the trees by Alan Engley, Arboricultural Consultant, and a survey of the boundary walls by Mann Williams, Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers. The Council is currently shortlisting contractors for the tree work recommended, and seeking quotes for the work required on the walls. The footpath alongside the churchyard has been temporarily diverted through the church- yard to avoid a stretch of wall which is considered unsafe. Financial Assistance Grants The Parish Council sets aside an amount of money each year for financial assistance grants that local groups can apply for to support an initiative or development that accords with the objectives in the Par- ish Plan (2010). Download an Application for Financial Assistance form from our website, or phone us to request a form, to apply for a grant for your group.
