Parma FC v CA Osasuna MATCH PRESS KIT Ennio Tardini, Parma Thursday, 14 December 2006 - 20:45 local time Group D - Matchday 5 CA Osasuna must avoid defeat to be sure of progressing as striker Savo Milošević returns to his old club, Parma FC, in UEFA Cup Group D. • Parma have already qualified for the Round of 32 as group winners. They won their opener 2-1 at Odense BK, then beat SC Heerenveen 2-1 at home and triumphed by the same scoreline at RC Lens - substitute Daniele Paponi scoring two minutes into added time. • Osasuna drew their Matchday 1 fixture 0-0 at home against Heerenveen then lost 3-1 at Lens, although a subsequent 3-1 win against OB lifted them into third place. A win or draw against Parma could see them finish second but a defeat might see them eliminated. • Goal difference, then goals scored, then away goals are used to decide rankings when sides finish level on points. Thus both OB and Heerenveen - who are at home to Lens - can potentially leapfrog them depending on results on Matchday 5. • The side finishing top of the section is guaranteed a tie against one of the third-placed finishers from another group in the draw for the Round of 32 on 15 December, while each pool runner-up will meet one of the third-placed finishers from the UEFA Champions League. • The two sides have never met in European competition. • Parma coach Stefano Pioli came up against Spanish opposition in the form of Club Atlético de Madrid during his playing career, appearing in both legs of an arduous 1989/90 UEFA Cup first-round tie with AC Fiorentina. The two teams traded 1-0 wins and then, after extra time, Pioli was among the scorers in a 3-1 shoot-out win. • Parma's Portuguese defender Fernando Couto represented FC Barcelona in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons. • Parma left-back Paolo Castellini spent two campaigns in Spain for Real Betis Balompié, appearing 13 times in the league and twice in European competition. • Osasuna striker Milošević counts Parma among his former clubs. The Serbian striker spent the 2000/01 season and part of the following campaign at Parma before a series of loan spells with Spanish sides culminated in a permanent move to Osasuna in 2004. He scored nine goals in 31 Serie A games. • Parma have taken on Spanish opposition nine times in European competition in the course of four two-legged ties and a UEFA Cup group stage fixture. • They twice beat Atlético in semi-finals on the way to victory against R. Antwerp FC in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final and triumph against Olympique de Marseille in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup final. • In total, they have won five games against Spanish opponents, drawing one and losing three. • In Italy, they have beaten their Spanish guests three times, losing the other fixture. Antwerp FC 3-1 in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. The Ducali had taken a tortuous route to London, overcoming Újpesti TC, Boavista FC, AC Sparta Praha and Club Atlético de Madrid, but were worthy champions on the day. Lorenzo Minotti (10th minute), Alessandro Melli (30) and Stefan Cuoghi (84) scored Parma's goals as they became the eighth Italian team to win a European trophy. They followed up that triumph with another in the UEFA Super Cup, winning 2-0 at AC Milan (Massimo Crippa scoring the winner in added time) having been beaten by Jean-Pierre Papin's goal at the Ennio Tardini stadium. • Their luck ran out when they lost the 1993/94 Cup Winners' Cup final 1-0 to Arsenal FC in Copenhagen, but Parma were back on form in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup final as they lifted this trophy for the first time by winning another all-Serie A final against Italian double-winners Juventus. Dino Baggio was Parma's hero, scoring in both legs to seal a 2-1 aggregate triumph after Gianluca Vialli had struck for the Bianconeri. • Parma won the UEFA Cup again in 1998/99 under Alberto Malesani. A team including the likes of Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro and Hernán Crespo crushed the likes of FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the quarter-finals en route to the Moscow showpiece, where Olympique de Marseille were similarly dispatched. Crespo opened the scoring on 36 minutes and Enrico Chiesa rounded it off 20 minutes later; in between Paolo Vanoli, the Gialloblù's car mechanic turned midfield player, had his moment in the sun too. UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Cup: 1994/95, 1998/99 • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1992/93 • UEFA Super Cup: 1993 Ten-year record (including current season) • Parma have been involved in UEFA club competition in nine of the past ten seasons, their sole absence coming during the 2005/06 season. In eight of those campaigns, the Italian club have featured in the UEFA Cup. • Parma recorded home and away 1-0 victories against Russian side FC Rubin Kazan to book their place in this season's group stage. A 79th-minute goal from Daniele Dessena provided Parma with a slender margin to take back to Italy where Daniele Paponi scored the only goal of the game four minutes into the second half at the Ennio Tardini. 1997/98: UEFA Champions League - group stage 1998/99: UEFA Cup - winners 1999/00: UEFA Cup - fourth round (having transferred from the European Champion Clubs' Cup third qualifying round) 2000/01: UEFA Cup - fourth round 2001/02: UEFA Cup - fourth round (having transferred from the European Champion Clubs' Cup third qualifying round) 2002/03: UEFA Cup - second round 2003/04: UEFA Cup - third round 2004/05: UEFA Cup - semi-finals 2005/06: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2006/07: UEFA Cup - group stage 2005/06 season Domestic record: After a sporting fraud investigation saw substantial sanctions meted out to Juventus, AC Milan, ACF Fiorentina and S.S. UEFA club competition honours • None Ten-year record (including current season) • Osasuna are involved in UEFA club competitions for the second time in the past decade and for their fourth season overall. They debuted in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup and appeared in the same competition again in both the 1991/92 and 2005/06 seasons. This term, Osasuna started their season in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, but following an away goals defeat against German side Hamburger SV who advanced to the UEFA Champions League, the Pamplona-based side had to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup. • UEFA Champions League hopes were dashed earlier this season by Hamburg who advanced from the European Champion Clubs' Cup third qualifying round on away goals at Osasuna's expense. The Spanish side looked to have gained a slender advantage by first holding their hosts to a scoreless draw in the opening leg and by then taking the lead after six minutes in the return through Javier Cuéllar only for Nigel de Jong to equalise for Hamburg 15 minutes from time. Osasuna thus moved to the UEFA Cup first round where they earned a 2-2 draw away against Trabzonspor in the opening leg with Valdo and Juanlu providing the Spanish side with a two-goal lead only for Gökdeniz Karadeniz and substitute Umut Bulut to hit back to salvage a draw. There were no goals in the return as Osasuna advanced to the group stage for the first time. 1997/98: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 1998/99: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 1999/00: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2000/01: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2001/02: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2002/03: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2003/04: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2004/05: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2005/06: UEFA Cup - first round 2006/07: UEFA Cup - group stage (having transferred from the European Champion Clubs' Cup, third qualifying round) 2005/06 season Domestic record: The Pamplona-based side edged out Sevilla FC for fourth place in the Spanish Primera División due to their superior head-to-head record.
