Best result: have never qualified Coach: Branko Brnović Leading scorer: all time – Mirko Vučinić (15); current – Mirko Vučinić (15) Most appearances: all time – Elsad Zverotić (44); current – Elsad Zverotić (44) Association formed: 2006 Nickname: Hrabri sokoli (The Brave Falcons) Where they play: Stadion Podgorica, Podgorica Montenegrin footballers, including 1990s superstars Dejan Savićevic and Predrag Mijatović, competed for many years on the international stage in the colours of Yugoslavia. It was not until 2006 – after a combined Serbia and Montenegro national side had participated in that year's FIFA World Cup in Germany – that the small Adriatic coastal state earned independence. Performances have exceeded expectations, with the team reaching the qualifying play- offs of UEFA EURO 2012 on their competition debut and also challenging strongly for a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup until their form tailed off in the second half of the campaign. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P10 W3 D3 L4 F7 A10 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P10 W3 D3 L4 F7 A10 Granted full membership of UEFA in January 2007, Montenegro have only competed in one UEFA European Championship campaign. It was a debut to remember, with the nation of just over 600,000 battling their way to the play-offs, where they lost out to the Czech Republic – 2-0 in Prague and 1-0 in Podgorica. They were unbeaten in their first five games, wins against Wales, Bulgaria and Switzerland preceding a creditable goalless draw with England at Wembley. Things faded after that, with a 1-1 draw at home to Bulgaria and a first defeat, 2-1 in Wales. Zlatko Kranjčar was then replaced by his assistant Branko Brnović and Montenegro rallied, a thrilling 2-2 draw against England in Podgorica, secured by Andrija Delibašićꞌs 91st-minute header, earning the runners-up spot. That put them in the play-offs, but they went no further. Memorable EURO matches 07/10/2011: Montenegro 2-2 England, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying The home side came from 2-0 down as Delibašićꞌs late header secured their play-off place. 12/10/2010: England 0-0 Montenegro, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Mladen Božović starred in goal and Milan Jovanović hit the bar for injury-hit Montenegro at Wembley. 03/09/2010: Montenegro 1-0 Wales, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Vučinić's solo effort on 30 minutes secured Montenegro's first EURO qualifying victory. Did you know? Mijatović scored the only goal in the 1998 UEFA Champions League final, earning Real Madrid CF victory against Juventus and their first European Cup for 32 years. *Last updated 07/01/14

Best result: have never qualified Coach: vacant Leading scorer: all-time – Henrikh Mkhitaryan (12); current – Henrikh Mkhitaryan (12) Most appearances: all-time – Sargis Hovsepyan (132); current – Roman Berezovski (83) Association formed: 1992 Nickname: none Where they play: Yerevan Republican Stadium after Vazgen Sargsyan, Yerevan Armenia have competed as an independent nation since 1992 but have yet to qualify for the final tournament of a FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship. They are certainly an improving force, however, the appointment of former midfielder Vardan Minasyan as coach in April 2009 having raised their performance level to such an extent that they came within one game of reaching the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying play-offs and also recovered from a slow start to register 13 points in the 2014 World Cup campaign. A number of the country's leading players, foremost among them Henrikh Mkhitaryan, have made their mark abroad at club level. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P50 W12 D10 L28 F46 A71 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P50 W12 D10 L28 F46 A71 Though Armenia finished bottom of their EURO '96 qualifying group, their debut campaign was notable for the team's first competitive victory, 2-1 away to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The former Soviet republic ended the next three campaigns one off the foot of their section, but things improved markedly on the road to UEFA EURO 2012. Minasyan put his faith in youth and, after a slow start, momentum was soon gathered. A 3-1 defeat of Slovakia and goalless draw at home to Russia, either side of a 4-0 triumph over Andorra, revived hopes. Three successive wins set up a decider against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, where they had goalkeeper Roman Berezovski dismissed and ultimately lost 2-1 to finish third. Memorable EURO matches 06/09/11: Slovakia 0-4 Armenia, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Mkhitaryan scored one and set up two as a young Armenia side underlined their potential. 22/08/07: Armenia 1-1 Portugal, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying Armenia took the group favourites by surprise and held on to claim a memorable point. 07/09/02: Armenia 2-2 Ukraine, UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying Albert Sarkisyan's 90th-minute penalty completed a sterling comeback in front of a sell-out crowd. Did you know? Armenia completed the double over Slovakia, a team that competed at the 2010 World Cup, in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying. * Last updated on 07/01/2014

Craig Brown was at the helm for EURO '96, where a 0-0 draw against the Netherlands preceded a 2-0 defeat by hosts England, Scotland bowing out despite beating Switzerland 1-0 as a late Patrick Kluivert goal against England took the Dutch through on goals scored. Scotland lost out in the play-offs in 2000 and 2004 and missed out because of a final-day defeat by Italy in 2008, despite beating France home and away. Pitted against world and European champions Spain in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, Craig Levein's side collected just one point from their first two games and failed to increase momentum thereafter, a concluding 3-1 loss to Spain leaving Scotland third, two points behind the Czech Republic. Strachan helped the Sky Blues avoid relegation before ending his on-field career aged 40 to concentrate on coaching, keeping the club in the until 2001. • Although sacked early the following season, he was swiftly appointed by Southampton FC – whom he guided to eighth place in the English top flight in 2002/03 and the 2003 FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Arsenal FC. Strachan announced early the next term that he would stand down at the close of the campaign for personal reasons, eventually resigning in March 2004 to concentrate on media work. • Installed as Martin O'Neill's successor at Celtic in summer 2005, Strachan proceeded to win the Scottish Premier League in record time and also lifted the Scottish League Cup in his first campaign. In 2006/07, Celtic triumphed in both league and , and got past the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time, falling in extra time to eventual winners AC Milan in the last 16. • Strachan steered the Bhoys to the round of 16 again in 2007/08, this time succumbing to FC Barcelona, and a tremendous late surge took Celtic past Rangers FC to retain the Scottish championship. • Stepping down at Celtic in 2009 after failing to defend the league crown, Strachan took up the reins at Middlesbrough in October that year yet was unable to help the side to promotion. Left the club after a poor start to the 2010/11 season. • Was appointed national coach in January 2013, helping reinvigorate a Scotland team that went on to win home and away against Croatia in their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying pool, despite failing to make the cut for Brazil.

Best result: have never qualified Coach: Mixu Paatelainen Leading scorers: all-time – Jari Litmanen (32); current – Mikael Forssell (29) Most appearances: all-time – Jari Litmanen (137); current – Mikael Forssell (86) Association formed: 1907 Nickname: Huuhkajat (Eagle Owls) Where they play: Olympic Stadium, Helsinki Having never reached a major tournament Finland's international record is modest, although with Englishman Roy Hodgson in charge they challenged strongly for a place at UEFA EURO 2008, losing just two of their 14 matches, and also proved competitive under Scotsman Stuart Baxter on the road to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, winning five of their ten games. A 1-1 draw away to Spain was the highlight of their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P94 W24 D21 L49 F100 A152 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P94 W24 D21 L49 F100 A152 It took Finland 19 UEFA European Championship qualifiers to record their first win, beating Greece 3-0 and following that up with a 2-1 triumph over Hungary at the start of their 1980 campaign. Home and away draws with the Soviet Union underlined their potential but an 8-1 defeat by Greece in Athens fatally undermined it – Finland missed out on a finals place by a point. That inconsistency has been a feature of their campaigns. Hodgson's team made a flying start to UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying, but back-to-back defeats by Azerbaijan and Serbia proved costly as a concluding goalless draw with Portugal left them fourth in the eight-team section. Finland went into the 2012 campaign with optimism, but successive defeats by Moldova, Netherlands and Hungary meant they were always up against it. Baxter departed, and after interim spells under Olli Huttunen and then Markku Kanerva, Mixu Paatelainen took the reins in spring 2011, victories against San Marino and Moldova and a point in lifting them to fourth. Memorable EURO matches 06/06/2007: Finland 2-0 Belgium, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying Finland gained a fine win and a new nickname as an eagle owl halted the first-half proceedings. 14/12/1994: Finland 4-1 San Marino, EURO '96 qualifying A rare early winter home game was a triumph as Paatelainen, then 27, scored all four Finland goals. 09/09/1987: Finland 3-0 Czechoslovakia, 1988 UEFA European Championship qualifying Martti Kuusela's five-year tenure ended in style as his players carried him around a victory lap. Did you know? The eagle owl that interrupted the 2007 match with Belgium at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Bubi, was named Helsinki Citizen of the Year that December. *Last updated 07/01/14

Mixu Paatelainen Date of birth: 3 February 1967 Nationality: Finnish Playing career: Valkeakosken Haka, Dundee United FC, Aberdeen FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Hibernian FC (twice), RC Strasbourg, Saint Johnstone FC, Saint Mirren FC Coaching career: Cowdenbeath FC, TPS Turku, Hibernian FC, Kilmarnock FC, Finland • The son of Finnish international forward Matti Paatelainen, Mixu began his playing career at Haka in Valkeakoski before starting a long association with Scotland in 1987, joining Dundee United. • A powerful striker who never considered himself a target man despite being much used in the role, Paatelainen spent five years with United and two at Aberdeen before heading south to England in 1994, signing for Bolton. • Helped the club to promotion to the Premier League and the English League Cup final in his first term. Although relegation followed a year later, Paatelainen won another promotion before leaving for a single season at Wolves in 1997/98. • Headed back to Scotland and Hibernian in 1998, breaking for a short and injury-plagued spell at Strasbourg in 2001/02. The final campaign of his playing days, which also featured 18 goals in 70 games for Finland, was at St Mirren in 2004/05, when he also worked as the club's assistant manager. • Took charge of Cowdenbeath in 2005, securing the side's first divisional title in 67 years in his only full season. Also a success during a solitary campaign at TPS, in January 2008 he earned his first top-flight assignment with Hibernian. Left Easter Road in May 2009, later returning to management at Kilmarnock before being appointed Finland coach in March 2011.

Best result: group stage 2004 Coach: Leading scorers: all time – Māris Verpakovskis (29); current – Juris Laizāns (15) Most appearances: all time – Vitālijs Astafjevs (167); current – Juris Laizāns (113) Association formed: 1912 Nickname: None Where they play: Skonto Stadium, Latvia's qualification for UEFA EURO 2004, when they defeated Turkey in a play-off after finishing group runners-up to Sweden, was one of the major upsets of the UEFA European Championship's modern era. A draw with Germany in Portugal added to the team's lustre, but that remains an isolated success. Third in their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying group was no mean feat, but a disappointing fifth-place finish in 2014 World Cup qualification meant that , the architect of that 2004 success, ended his second spell in charge on a disappointing note. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P55 W20 D9 L26 F62 A74 Final tournament: P3 W0 D1 L2 F1 A5 Qualifying: P52 W20 D8 L24 F61 A69 Latvia's breakthrough on the international scene came when Starkovs' side qualified for UEFA EURO 2004, the country's first major tournament. They registered wins in Poland and Sweden en route to a play-off against Turkey, who they defeated 1-0 at home before recovering from 2-0 down to draw the second leg 2-2 in Istanbul. The Baltic nation, who made their EURO debut in the qualifying competition for EURO '96, did not embarrass themselves in Portugal, ultimately eliminating Germany. Starkovs' team were unable to reach those heights in qualification for UEFA EURO 2008, losing eight of their 12 games as they ended well off the pace in fifth in their seven-team section. Indeed, Latvia have finished fourth or fifth every campaign bar UEFA EURO 2004. Last time round it was fourth, but only after a strong conclusion that brought seven points from their last four fixtures. Memorable EURO matches 19/06/04: Latvia 0-0 Germany, 2004 UEFA European Championship group stage A stoic defence inspired Latvia to their most famous draw; Māris Verpakovskis almost won it. 19/11/03: Turkey 2-2 Latvia, UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying play-offs Two down with 26 minutes left, goals from Juris Laizāns and Verpakovskis silenced the home fans. 15/11/03: Latvia 1-0 Turkey, UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying play-offs Verpakovskis' solo goal in freezing conditions made a nation believe in the impossible. Did you know? Current Latvia assistant coach Vitālijs Astafjevs won a European record 167 caps in an 18-year career that spanned from 1992 to 2010. *Last updated on 07/01/14

Marians Pahars Date of birth: 5 August 1976 Nationality: Latvian Playing career: FK Pārdaugava, Skonto Metall FC, Skonto FC (twice), Southampton FC, Anorthosis Famagusta FC, FC Jūrmala Coaching career: Skonto FC, Latvia Under-21s, Latvia • Born in the village of Chornobai in central Ukraine, he moved to Latvia – his parents' homeland – while young and undertook his football education in Riga before making his senior debut at Skonto in 1995. He won the league title in each of his first four seasons, and the double in three of them. • Transferred to English Premier League outfit Southampton in 1999, where the diminutive forward became a firm fans' favourite. Known as the 'Latvian Owen' after England striker Michael Owen, he spent seven successful years with the Saints, despite a succession of injuries. • After a year with Anorthosis, lifting the Cypriot Cup, Pahars returned to Latvia and Skonto, ending his career at Jūrmala in 2009. He accepted a role as assistant to Aleksandrs Starkovs at Skonto the following year. • Skonto claimed the 2010 championship and Pahars replaced Starkovs at the helm the next year. His first term in the hot seat brought the Latvian Cup and a runners-up finish in the First Division, though Pahars soon left as Skonto were suffering off-the-pitch problems. • Pahars was out of football for just two months before taking charge of Latvia's U21 side. His tenure lasted a solitary game as Starkovs' unexpected decision to step down as senior team boss last summer prompted the younger man's immediate promotion on a contract until 2018.

Best result: have never qualified Coach: Chris Coleman Leading scorers: all-time – Ian Rush (28); current – Gareth Bale (11) Most appearances: all-time – Neville Southall (92); current – Chris Gunter, Sam Ricketts (51) Association formed: 1876 Nickname: Dreigiau (Dragons) Where they play: Cardiff City Stadium; Millennium Stadium, Cardiff More than half a century has passed since Wales last participated in a major tournament, the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, in which a John Charles-inspired team reached the quarter-finals. They did reach the last eight of the 1976 UEFA European Championship but lost a two-legged tie to Yugoslavia and missed out on the four-team final tournament. Since then a plethora of top-class footballers, among them Ian Rush and Ryan Giggs, have been unable to represent the Principality on the biggest stage; Gareth Bale will aim to inspire Wales to end the run and qualify for UEFA EURO 2016. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P94 W35 D18 L41 F114 A129 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P94 W35 D18 L41 F114 A129 Yugoslavia were always Wales' bogey team in the UEFA European Championship, denying them a place in the four- team 1976 final tournament and then stopping the Dragons in their tracks in qualifying for the 1984 final tournament. Victory in the final home game would have taken Wales through but Mehmed Baždarević's 81st-minute leveller enabled the visitors to claim the qualifying berth. Not until UEFA EURO 2004 did Wales come as close again. Facing Russia in the play-offs, hopes soared after a 0-0 draw in Moscow only for a 1-0 home defeat to deny them once more. UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying proved to be a more troubled campaign than most, with promising results on the pitch overshadowed by the death of manager Gary Speed in November 2011. Memorable EURO matches 15/11/2003: Russia 0-0 Wales, UEFA EURO 2004 play-off A fine defensive display made it advantage Wales before a home loss proved their undoing. 05/06/1991: Wales 1-0 Germany, EURO '92 qualifying Ian Rush's 66th-minute winner gave Wales a deserved victory over the world champions. 14/12/1983: Wales 1-1 Yugoslavia, 1984 UEFA European Championship qualifying Needing to win to secure qualification, Wales were thwarted by Baždarević's late equaliser. Did you know? Wales became only the third team to play an official international match when they lost 4-0 to Scotland in a friendly in Partick on 25 March 1876. Wales' entirely amateur squad included two lawyers, a timber merchant, a soldier, a stonemason, a miner and defender William Williams, who made chimney tops. *Last updated on 07/01/14

Best result: group stage 1996, 2004 Coach: Luboslav Penev Leading scorers: all-time Dimitar Berbatov, Hristo Bonev – (48); current – Ivelin Popov (10) Most appearances: all-time – Stiliyan Petrov (106); current – Ivelin Popov (47) Association formed: 1923 Nickname: Lavovete (Lions) Where they play: Natsionalen Stadion Vasil Levski, Sofia Present at seven FIFA World Cups, including four in a row from 1962 to 1974, and two UEFA European Championships, Bulgaria have a history of success in international competition, although they have not qualified for a major tournament in the past decade. Their most memorable achievement came 20 years ago, when, inspired by the tournament's joint top scorer Hristo Stoichkov, they reached the semi-finals of USA '94, eliminating holders Germany en route. With record marksman Dimitar Berbatov retired from international football, the team made a decent fist of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup only to run out of steam at the end. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P109 W47 D25 L37 F152 A121 Final tournament: P6 W1 D1 L4 F4 A13 Qualifying: P103 W46 D24 L33 F148 A108 Bulgaria have twice reached the group stage of a UEFA European Championship, although in 1968, when the finals consisted of only four nations, they went as far as the last eight. Those two final tournament appearances yielded just one win, 1-0 against Romania at EURO '96. Eight years later, at UEFA EURO 2004, Bulgaria suffered three defeats, including an opening 5-0 reverse in Lisbon against a Henrik-Larsson inspired Sweden. Bulgaria were beaten just once in 12 matches during UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying, but their record was not good enough to achieve a top-two finish in a section won by Romania. The route to UEFA EURO 2012 started with Stanimir Stoilov being dismissed after two successive losses. Lothar Matthäus came in but lasted just a year. Wales' victory in Sofia against a side led by stand-in coach Mihail Madanski provided a suitably glum finale as the Lions finished four points adrift at the foot of the five-team pool. Memorable EURO matches 13/06/96: Bulgaria 1-0 Romania, EURO '96 group stage Stoichkov's third-minute strike in Newcastle gave Bulgaria their only finals win to date. 07/06/95: Bulgaria 3-2 Germany, EURO '96 qualifying Two Stoichkov penalties and Kostadinov's 70th-minute winner completed an unforgettable comeback. 06/04/68: Bulgaria 3-2 Italy, 1968 UEFA European Championship quarter-finals First-leg strikes from Nikola Kotkov, Dinko Dermendzhiev and Petar Zhekov earned victory against the eventual champions. Did you know? Bulgaria won their first six games of the EURO '96 qualifying campaign, a sequence that included a 3-2 home victory against Germany. *Last updated on 07/01/2014

Best result: have never qualified Coach: Magnus Pehrsson Leading scorers: all-time – (38); current – (17) Most appearances: all-time – (157); current – Raio Piiroja (113) Association formed: 1921 Nickname: None Where they play: Lilleküla Stadium, After regaining independence, Estonia found life at the top level of international football tough going. Their first qualifying campaign for a major tournament resulted in ten straight defeats, conceding 31 goals along the way, for EURO '96. Though results improved slightly Estonia continued to struggle, finishing second bottom in their section in qualifying for the next three UEFA European Championships. While creditable results had been achieved in FIFA World Cup qualifying it was UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying that provided the brightest moment to date as Tarmo Rüütli's side reached the play-offs before losing to the Republic of Ireland, although they then finished second bottom in their 2014 World Cup group. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P52 W12 D7 L33 F43 A94 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P52 W12 D7 L33 F43 A94 After that point-less start to EURO qualifying in 1996, Estonia performed more creditably in the UEFA EURO 2000 preliminaries, collecting 11 points from ten matches – although they still finished second bottom in their section. That was also their fate in qualifying for the 2004 (eight points) and 2008 (seven) competitions, the latter campaign undermined by an opening run of seven straight defeats. It was a very different story for UEFA EURO 2012 which began with a late victory against the Faroe Islands and, more notably, a 3-1 triumph in Serbia. Momentum was lost with defeats in Italy and the Faroe Islands, but three straight wins, in Slovenia, then home and away against Northern Ireland, secured a play-off spot. There Ireland proved too strong, their 4-0 first-leg success proving unassailable as Estonia went down 5-1 on aggregate. Memorable EURO matches 07/10/2011: Northern Ireland 1-2 Estonia, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Konstantin Vassiljev came off the bench to score twice late on and seal runners-up spot. 08/10/2010: Serbia 1-3 Estonia, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Tarmo Kink, Vassiljev and an own goal helped the visitors to a famous comeback victory. 04/06/1998: Estonia 5-0 Faroe Islands, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying Record goalscorer Andres Oper was on target as Estonia claimed their first win in EURO qualifying. Did you know? In their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying group Estonia scored 15 goals and conceded 14, giving them a positive goal difference for the first time. *Last updated on 07/01/2014

Best result: have never qualified Coach: Georgi Kondratiev Leading scorer: all-time – Maksim Romaschenko (20); current – Sergei Kornilenko (14) Most appearances: all-time – Aleksandr Kulchiy (102); current – Aleksandr Hleb (64) Association formed: 1989 Nickname: Red-and-Greens Where they play: Various, including Dinamo Stadion, Minsk; Tsentralny Stadium, Gomel Since first competing as an independent nation in EURO '96 qualifying, Belarus have never made it through to the play-offs, let alone a final tournament, their best effort coming when they finished third in the 2002 FIFA World Cup preliminaries having challenged for a finals place right up until their concluding game. Fourth is their highest ranking in a UEFA European Championship qualifying group, though they might have done better in the most recent campaign when they were unable to build on a momentous opening 1-0 win in France. They finished last in their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying section. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P48 W11 D10 L27 F41 A73 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P48 W11 D10 L27 F41 A73 Belarus lost 1-0 to Norway on their UEFA European Championship qualifying debut in September 1994. They would finish the campaign fourth in the group, ahead of Malta and Luxembourg, but laid down a marker with a famous 1-0 win against a star-studded Netherlands side in Minsk. Two draws with Italy were rare highlights in a disappointing UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying campaign, and while Belarus have yet to reach a major tournament, they have continued to upset Europe's heavyweights. The Dutch came unstuck in the Belarusian capital once again in November 2007, and there was a 1-0 win away to France three years later as Bernd Stange's team enjoyed a terrific start to UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying. That win in Paris was the start of a four- game run in which Stange's charges conceded no goals and garnered eight points, though their campaign ultimately fizzled out. Memorable EURO matches 03/09/2010: France 0-1 Belarus, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Sergei Kislyak's late effort capped a sensational display at the Stade de France. 31/03/1999: Italy 1-1 Belarus, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying The visitors held on valiantly after Filippo Inzaghi cancelled out Valentin Belkevich's goal. 07/06/1995: Belarus 1-0 Netherlands, EURO '96 qualifying Serguei Gerasimets' goal earned victory against a team loaded with UEFA Champions League winners. Did you know? In 2013, Belarus played 13 matches – their highest ever total in a calendar year (W4 D4 L5). *Last updated on 07/01/14

:: Team facts EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying). From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 is the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals. FIFA World Cup qualification: the team facts section displays all the competing countries' EURO and World Cup campaign history. Please note, though, that Israel (1950 to 1994) and Kazakhstan (1998 to 2002) have participated in World Cup qualification as non-UEFA members. FIFA Confederations Cup/Olympic Games: FIFA Confederations Cup games are included as friendlies while matches played in Olympic Games football tournaments are not recorded in this press kit. Goals for/against: Goal totals include the outcome of disciplinary decisions (e.g. match forfeits when a 3-0 result is determined). Goals totals do not include goals scored during a penalty shoot-out after a tie ended in a draw. Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
