Turkey need another three points in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group A as they welcome Latvia, with 's side two points adrift of the Netherlands and fourth in the section. Previous meetings • Valērijs Šabala's penalty earned Latvia a 1-1 draw when they met Turkey for the first time in Group A in October 2014. • That was the countries' fifth encounter since they first met in 1924, when Turkey beat their hosts 3-1 in Riga. The sides' most recent head-to-head was a friendly in Duisburg, Germany, on 28 May 2013 in which Turkey let slip a 2-0 half-time lead to draw 3-3; Šabala scored Latvia's second and third goals in that game, his first goals for his country. • Their most famous meetings came in the UEFA EURO 2004 play-offs when 's men won 1-0 at home and then came back from 2-0 down against Şenol Güneş's team to draw 2-2 in Istanbul and make it to the finals of a major tournament for the first time. Current Latvia coach featured as a late substitute in the second leg. Disciplinary • Turkey midfielder Gökhan Töre is a yellow card away from a suspension. • Latvia defender Kaspars Gorkšs and midfielder Artūrs Zjuzins are both a booking away from a suspension. Form guide • Turkey have rallied since losing their opening two Group A games, taking eight points from a possible 12 in their subsequent fixtures. However, they can ill afford to drop any more points as they chase a ticket to France. • Turkey have lost two of their last three competitive home games. • Latvia have yet to win in Group A, but have drawn three times – against the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan, as well as Turkey. • Latvia have not won in nine competitive away games (D3 L6) since a 1-0 success in Georgia on 2 September 2011. Trivia and links • Turkish clubs are unbeaten in five UEFA competition encounters with Latvian counterparts (W3 D2). • The two nations have won one each of their three meetings in UEFA age-group tournaments.

5 Turkey - Latvia Thursday 3 September 2015 - 20.45CET (21.45 local time) Match press kit Konya Büyükşehir Belediyesi Stadyumu, Konya Head coach Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: , Galatasaray AŞ Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (three times), Galatasaray AŞ (three times), ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan • A central defender, Terim represented Galatasaray for over a decade and played 51 games for Turkey, 32 as captain. Began his coaching career with Ankaragücü and Göztepe, before being named assistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the U21s in 1990. • Appointed Turkey coach in 1993, Terim led them to EURO '96. They lost all their matches in England, but just getting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark. • Returned to Galatasaray after the EURO, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling and Terim took the helm at Fiorentina and Milan before rejoining Galatasaray; however, a run of disappointing results brought about a temporary retirement in 2004. • Reappointed Turkey coach in 2005, Terim – known as 'İmparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – could not guide them through a 2006 World Cup play-off against Switzerland. Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008 with Terim steering Turkey to the semi-finals but he resigned following unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 World Cup. • Back for a third spell as Galatasaray boss in July 2011, in his first season he inspired Cimbom to their first Süper Lig crown in four years. Repeated the feat in 2013 when also helping Galatasaray to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Named head of the national team for a third time – on a part-time basis – in August 2013, he parted company with Galatasaray in September to assume the role full time. Was unable to lead Turkey to the 2014 World Cup despite winning three of his four qualifiers in charge. Marians Pahars Date of birth: 5 August 1976 Nationality: Latvian Playing career: FK Pārdaugava, Skonto Metall FC, Skonto FC (twice), Southampton FC, Anorthosis Famagusta FC, FC Jūrmala Coaching career: Skonto FC, Latvia Under-21s, Latvia • Born in the village of Chornobai in central Ukraine, he moved to Latvia – his parents' homeland – while young and undertook his football education in Riga before making his senior debut at Skonto in 1995. He won the league title in each of his first four seasons, and the double in three of them. • Transferred to English outfit Southampton in 1999, where the diminutive forward became a firm fans' favourite. Known as the 'Latvian Owen' after England striker Michael Owen, he spent seven successful years with the Saints, despite a succession of injuries. • After a year with Anorthosis, lifting the Cypriot Cup, Pahars returned to Latvia and Skonto, ending his career at Jūrmala in 2009. He accepted a role as assistant to Aleksandrs Starkovs at Skonto the following year. • Skonto claimed the 2010 championship and Pahars replaced Starkovs at the helm the next year. His first term in the hot seat brought the Latvian Cup and a runners-up finish in the First Division, though Pahars soon left as Skonto were suffering off-the-pitch problems. • Pahars was out of football for just two months before taking charge of Latvia's U21 side. His tenure lasted a solitary game as Starkovs' unexpected decision to step down as senior team boss last summer prompted the younger man's immediate promotion on a contract until 2018.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
