Native Americans
Indian Sunset Native Americans The plains sustained tribes of Native Americans who survived here with their herds of buffalo. [A “survivor” explains:] “The buffalo was a gift from the Creator. It was given to the Native American to use, to survive, to live on this earth. We use it, every part of the buffalo, from the horn to the hoof. Spirituality of the buffalo is very important to us. It meant everything to the Native American.” 5 Here on the plains the tribes set out to win empires. One people, the Sioux, had a vision of dominion over mountains, desert and forest. On horseback they ranged over the land and imagined it united. With guns bought from Europeans they pursued their own territorial ambitions. But there was one rival they couldn’t match – the invading white man. With their industrialized machines, this new enemy made war to indigenous cultures. The Whites 10 used belief in their Manifest Destiny to justify conquering the whole of the continent. Millions of emigrants came to America and crossed the country on newly-built rail tracks laid by Irish and Chinese laborers. Faced with the loss of their land the plains’ peoples were forced into guerilla warfare. The Kansas- Pacific Railroad employed the 7th Cavalry commanded by General Custer to defend the trains against attacks. The invaders were backed by the manufacturers of guns and ammunition on an industrial scale. 2 15 million bullets a day were produced by the Winchester factory alone. The railroad also hired a young scout, William Cody, later known as Buffalo Bill to kill buffalo to feed their workers. -

Frankie on Snowfall in Cazoo Oaks
THURSDAY, 3 JUNE 2021 FRANKIE ON SNOWFALL LAST CALL FOR BREEZERS AT GORESBRIDGE IN NEWMARKET By Emma Berry IN CAZOO OAKS NEWMARKET, UKCCA little later than scheduled, the European 2-year-old sales season will conclude on Thursday with the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up, which has returned to Newmarket for a second year owing to ongoing Covid travel restrictions. What was already a bumper catalogue for a one-day sale of more than 200 horses has been beefed up still by the inclusion of 16 wild cards that have been rerouted from other recent sales for a variety of reasons. They include horses with some pretty starry pedigrees, so be prepared for some of the major action to take place late in the day. Indeed the last three catalogued all have plenty to recommend them on paper. Lot 241 from Mayfield Stables is the American Pharoah colt out of the Irish champion 2-year-old filly Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur). BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT a Broodmare’S Nicking Analysis with up to 50 Potential Stallions
COMPILED SPECIFICALLY FOR Tempo BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT A broodmare’s nicking analysis with up to 50 potential stallions Copyright © 2011 The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks. A Statistically Valid Approach Unlike other ratings that are calculated based on hypothetical opportunity within a limited group of horses, TrueNicks references the international database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all starters and stakes winners on a given cross. The Statistics The TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: the Sire Improvement Index (SII) and the Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Each figure compares the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters. -

New Era for Phipps Stable Cont
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2019 TAKING STOCK: NEW ERA PLANNING TO BUILD NEW TRACK, CHURCHILL DOWNS WILL APPLY FOR TURFWAY DATES FOR PHIPPS STABLE by Bill Finley At Friday’s meeting of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, Churchill Downs will apply for the 2020 dates that had traditionally gone to Turfway Park. The story, which was broken by the Daily Racing Form’s Matt Hegarty, was later confirmed by Churchill Downs through a press release. Churchill’s plan is to build a new racetrack in Northern Kentucky that would likely replace Turfway. Churchill would race in the winter while the new facility is being built. The DRF said the new track could be ready to host some dates by 2021. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. by Sid Fernando The iconic Phipps Stable is doing the unprecedented. For the first time, it is selling its entire crop of yearling colts. This is set to go down next week at the Keeneland September sale through Claiborne, as agent. No need to sound the alarm, however--Daisy Phipps Pulito, who co-owns the elite Claiborne-based operation with her mother, brother, and two sisters, said the stable is not going anywhere. Known for racing homebred colts and fillies by top-notch sires and out of mares from some of the most storied families in the Stud Book--most of them developed and nurtured over decades by various generations of Phippses--the family is breaking new ground so that it can grow the operation in other directions. -
