The sequence of stable mineral assemblages from slate of the low greenschist facies to quartz-sillimanite-cordierite-biotite-pota s sic feldspar hornfels is deduced from petrographic and X-ray powder diffraction data. Chemical analyses of coexisting biotite and cordierite by instrumental methods show that chemical equilibrium is closely approached in the high grade assemblages. Shifts of the stability fields of the minerals can be explained in terms of the physical variables of metamorphism. Thesis Supervisor: Professor H. W. Part One (Condensed for publication from Part Two) 1-1 I. INTRODUCTION This study is one of several completed in the last few years at M. I. T., all of which were aimed at quantitatively evaluating the extent to which chemical equilibrium is attained in various meta- morphic processes. The methods adopted were primarily petro- graphic study and chemical analysis of coexisting ferromagnesian minerals by means of instrumental procedures developed by Shapiro and Brannock (1956). The contact aureole of the Onawa pluton in Maine proved suitable for such a study because previous field and petrographic work (Philbrick, 1933, 1936) showed it to be well ex- posed, intruded into low calcium pelites, relatively free of polymeta- morphic effects and not so fine grained as to prohibit mineral sepa- rations. It thus appeared that the contact metamorphic mineral assemblages would be amenable to graphical treatment according to the methods of Thompson (1957) as a means of interpreting them in the light of chemical thermodynamic theory. II. LOCATION AND TOPOGRAPHY The Onawa pluton is located in central Maine (index map, Fig- ure 1), in Piscataquis county, in the Sebec Lake and Sebec topographic quadrangles. A map of the intrusive and its aureole, taken from Philbrick (1933), is reproduced in Figure 2(a) (Part Two, p. 12). The resistant hornfelses crop out on the peaks and slopes of the mountains which surround a swampy basin occupied by the pluton. The aureole is accessible by road at the western end.

Previously, commerce sailing out of Norwich played an important role in the development of the city when the earliest steamboat connections were established from Norwich to New York in 1816. The old Norwich Line steamboats sailed out of Norwich to New York and other destinations from 1845 to 1911. As this was happening, Samuel Slater’s development of the cotton mill in the late 1790s propelled the citizens’ quest for ‘newer and better’. Investors/ developers from Rhode Island and Massachusetts saw industrial potential Observed the growth of factories in their neighboring states that harnessed waterpower for use as the given form of energy- Yankee ingenuity saw the potential to foster the rivers in and around Norwich. With the Yantic Falls as a starting point for this change, waterpower changed Norwich to a manufacturing giant of cotton and woolen textiles. 1 Greeneville The history of the Norwich Department of Public Utilities can not stand isolated, but it must be shown in the light of the development of the City of Norwich especially the Greeneville section. Greenville was established in 1828 on the west bank of the Shetucket River, approximately one mile above the confluence of the Thames, Yantic, and Shetucket Rivers because of the gentle terraces along the Shetucket. This section of Norwich was designed to be a village by the Norwich Water Power Company, who owned the land and water rights along the Shetucket River.
