Arcadia Élevage looking to make a splash

SALLY ANN GRASSICK speaks to Antoine Bellanger of Arcadia Élevage, who offers his first draft at Arqana’s Select Yearling Sale this week

eading out on your own and setting up as a consignor after many years with a top operation would be a daunting Hchallenge in any normal year but, as we all know by now, 2020 is far from a normal year. However, Antoine Bellanger is feeling confident ahead of presenting his first yearling draft under the banner Arcadia Élevage at the Arqana Select Yearling Sale, after 11 years as yearling manager at Écurie des Monceaux. “It is obviously far from ideal and the whole world is going through a difficult period at the moment, but I have to get on with things, I Lot 33 is the first lot into the ring for Arcadia Élevage and is a can hardly change my mind now!” says Bellanger. “The Territories half-brother to the Gr.2 winner Boscaccio industry is quite unique as it almost operates in its own bubble. “This colt is really strong and a true athlete. He is very impressive to look at and moves beautifully,” Bellanger enthuses. “He is out of a Sea The Stars mare from the strong Aga Khan family of Valia. She is a very talented filly and a strong contender for the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, which unfortunately for us comes after the sale. Kodiac is in incredible form at the moment after his 1-2 in the Gr.1 Prix Morny recently, so I am delighted to have one of his sons in my first draft. From the family of Treve, he is a sibling of three winners including German Gr.2 and Listed winner Boscaccio (Mount Nelson). “This good-looking colt is from an excellent family on his dam’s side. He is a strong sort and walks well. Territories has had a good start with his first crop on the track and this is a very nice colt,” Bellanger says. “We also have a colt by Air Force Blue (Lot 110) who is the first foal out of a Stakes-placed Verglas mare. He is a lovely yearling and I think he will catch the eye of a lot of buyers at the sale.” The latter was purchased as a foal for €40,000 at Arqana last December by Bellanger himself so he will have a vested interest in seeing how his selection fares on his return to the ring. Another foal knocked down to Arcadia Élevage last December, for the Lot 275, a Dark Angel colt, pinhooked at Arqana last princely sum of €135,000, was a son of Dark Angel who returns December, is from an outstanding Aga Khan family. to the ring as Lot 275.
