Introduzione ‑ L’idea di questo volume nasce da una ricerca sulle esposizioni universali, che, nel la loro molteplice e complessa natura, mi hanno reso ancora più evidente quanto la ‑ rappresentazione e la visione dell’Altro costituiscano un aspetto di grande rilevanza proprio nella costruzione del Sé. In questo libro l’Altro è l’Occidente, osservato per l’ap punto attraverso lo sguardo di alcuni1 intellettuali arabi vissuti tra XIX e XX secolo che, per motivi diversi, hanno visitato l’Europa lasciando una testimonianza scritta dei loro ‑ viaggi. Come ha scritto Brugnolo , si tratta di termini ormai abusati, ma che sottendono significati da cui non si può oggi prescindere, in questa società globalizzata ma forte 2. mente polarizzata, in cui l’opposizione tra “noi” e “loro” sembra dar ragione all’ormai tristemente famoso “scontro di civiltà” postulato da Huntington ‑ Il mio studio presuppone la convinzione che le culture non sono e non devono ‑ essere concepite come mondi chiusi e incomunicabili, né tantomeno come universi va loriali incompatibili, ma, al contrario, vanno lette e interpretate come mondi che convi 3 ‑ vono, si sviluppano e si influenzano reciprocamente, in modi complessi e storicamente determinati . L’idea di fondo è che l’Altro si definisce in base al Sé e che le esperien ‑ ze dell’umanità, al di là delle differenze linguistiche, religiose e culturali, sono tra loro 4 confrontabili. Indicazioni particolarmente utili mi sono venute, in questo senso, dalla lettura dell’affascinante lavoro di Leed, che ha studiato il viaggio non come evento occasionale, 7. ma, come un’esperienza che è al contempo di perdita – ciò che il viaggiatore lascia a casa ifranǧ o i – e di acquisizione – quanto acquista nelle molteplici esperienze con l’Altro naṣrānī ‑ I territori arabi dell’Impero ottomano, ‘l’Oriente’ e il suo Altro, l’Europa, gli , hanno sempre avuto relazioni, ufficiali e non, fatte di ambascerie, scambi com merciali, ma anche di guerre e alleanze politiche. La contrapposizione noi/loro è stata ‑ parte integrante non solo del confronto, ma anche della determinazione del Sé, al di là del dato religioso. Entrambi i termini di questa relazione sono sempre stati realtà com passe-partout ‑ plesse. Per quanto riguarda l’Oriente, il Corano è stato a lungo considerato, in Occidente, come l’unico per comprendere quel mondo. Ma, sebbene l’Islam costitui sca certamente il denominatore comune nel determinare codici comportamentali, etici, politici e sociali, la realtà cui ha dato vita è, fin dalle origini, tutt’altro che omogenea e comprende al suo interno anche altre appartenenze religiose, tra cui quella cristiana nelle sue diverse confessioni (melchita, giacobita, nestoriana e copta). I modi stessi in pluralità d’Islam cui l’Islam si è diffuso nelle diverse regioni e nei diversi8 periodi storici hanno prodotto ciò che Aziz al-Azmeh ha definito una : qualcosa, insomma, di molto diverso dall’immagine dominante nel mondo occidentale, quella di un Islam-monolite, immutabile nel tempo e nello spazio. E le narrazioni dei nostri viaggiatori, alcuni dei quali sono cristiani, pongono in evidenza l’esistenza di un substrato culturale comune, una cosiddetta “tradizione orientale”, al di là dell’appartenenza religiosa. ‑ Nel testo sopra citato, Brugnolo mostra come l’Altro, nello specifico l’Oriente, sia andato definendosi nella letteratura coloniale come l’irrazionale, il rimosso della civil 5 ‑ Ḥasan Ḥanafī ritiene l’orientalismo rivelatore della mentalità occidentale piuttosto che di quel la orientale e lo considera alla stregua del fascismo o del razzismo, un’ideologia volta ad affermare‑ l’egemonia occidentale.     The Vagabond Café and Jerusalem's Prince of Idleness Salim Tamari The return of Khalil Sakakini from his American sojourn in the autumn of 1908 was an occasion for contemplating the creation of a new kind of cultural space: the literary café; a public meeting place to accommodate his newly-formed circle of literati, the "Party of the Vagabonds" (hizb al-sa'aleek). For Sakakini and many like-minded intellectuals of the period, the time was ripe. The new Ottoman constitution had just been declared and calls for decentralization, Arab autonomy and freedom of press and assembly were spreading throughout Syria and Palestine. Sakakini was penniless and heavily in debt. But Iqbal had found philosophy an unreliable guide and, therefore, discarded it. In his experience it was only through love of the Holy Prophet that he had been able to resolve his intellectual problems. Consequently, in the poem titled” “ ” at the end of “Asrar-o-Rumuz” (and this is the work which ushered in the magnificent dawn of his poetry) he declares that the foundation of all his thoughts is laid on the teachings of the Quran and if there happens to be anything repugnant or contrary to it, then, he pleads to the Holy Prophet: (Tear off the veil of the sanctity of my thought. Remove a thorn like myself from the garden of the Umma. Disgrace me on the Day of Judgment, and Deprive me of the honour of kissing your holy foot.) It appears that the flame of love of the Holy Prophet had kept in his heart eversince his young days. In 1905, when he proceeded to Europe for higher studies, his ship passed by the coast of Arabia and he could not resist recording the following impressions: Iqbal Review 41:3-4 (2001) “O sacred land of Arabia you were nothing but a stone which had been rejected by the architects of the world. Interdisciplinary Arts Imaging the Almeh: Transformation and Multiculturalization of the Eastern Dancer in Painting, Theatre, and film 1850-1950 (349pp.) Director of Dissertation: Charles Buchanan This dissertation explores the images of the Middle Eastern and North African dancer, also known as raqisah sharqi, almeh, and belly dancer, and the role of Western and Eastern male artists in developing her persona. It argues that Jean-Léon Gérôme, Oscar Wilde, and Farid al-Atrash position the dancer according to their own agendas and persuade the viewers to gaze at her to advance their art. Al-Atrash, however, enables the dancer to suggest elements other than her sexuality when she dances to his music. The artworks of these artists are examined through the theory of the gaze, the postcolonial double marginalization of women, and the discourse of Orientalism. The representations of the almeh in Gérôme’s paintings are also explored via methods of feminist art historians that advocate interpretation through the examination of cultural and political context.
