But while the hotel celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019, its rich and romantic history actually dates back to a 1930s love affair between the charismatic American Rhoda Lewinsohn and adventurous French bachelor Gabriel Prudhomme.

After falling madly in love during Rhoda’s Kenyan safari trip, the pair planned to build a property where they would start their new life together, choosing the foot of Mount Kenya and its magnificent views as the setting. Unfortunately for Rhoda and Gabriel, their love affair didn’t last, and their former home was later bought and turned into an inn. It is shortly after, in 1959, that the hotel’s story begins. Like Rhoda before him, actor William Holden also fell in love during a safari trip, becoming so enamored with the property that he decided to buy it, turning it into the exclusive Mount Kenya Safari Club.
