Aufgrund fortgeschrittener technischer Entwicklungen der bei der Polarforschung zum Einsatz kom- menden Methoden und Geräte sowie ausgeweiteter logistischer und touristischer Aktivitäten in der Antarktis, war eine erneute Evaluation auf Grundlage des aktuellen Forschungsstandes erforderlich. Die vorliegende Studie wurde um die terrestrische Komponente der Ökosystemforschung mit deren potentiellen Umweltauswirkungen ergänzt. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, den aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisstand über die AUG relevanten Schutzgüter der antarktischen Umwelt, die bei der modernen Polarforschung zum Einsatz kommen- den Methoden und deren begleitende Logistik sowie der touristischen Aktivitäten mit der eingesetz- ten Logistik in der Antarktis darzustellen. Auf dieser Basis soll eine vorläufige Bewertung nach AUG für die bei diesen Aktivitäten entstehenden Umweltauswirkungen vorgenommen werden können, so- fern dies ohne Kenntnis der spezifischen Einsatzbedingungen möglich ist. Abstract A study of almost equal wording published in 1999 (Carstens et al., 1999; FKZ 29625507) already provides important insights from marine ecosystem research regarding its relevance for the imple- mentation of procedures for the approval of research projects and tourism activities according to the AUG. Due to advanced technical developments in the methods and devices used in polar research, as well as extended logistical and tourist activities in the Antarctic, a re-evaluation was necessary on the ba- sis of the current state of research. The present study was supplemented by the terrestrial compo- nent of ecosystem research and its potential environmental impacts. The aim of this study is to describe current scientific knowledge about Antarctic components related to the environmental protocol, to present the methods used in modern polar research and their ac- companying logistics as well as the tourism activities with the implemented logistics in the Antarctic. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund dieser Umweltbedingungen begann ihre umfassende Erforschung erst im 20. Jahrhundert. Eine wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit in der Antarktis fing während des Internationalen Geophysikalischen Jahres (IGY) 1957/58 an. Sie wird bis heute von dem 1958 gegründeten nicht-staatlichen Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) gefördert und international koordiniert. Zwölf Staaten, die während des IGY in der Antarktis Forschungsstationen eingerichtet hatten, unterzeichneten 1959 den Antarktis- vertrag, der die friedliche Nutzung und die internationale wissenschaftliche Kooperation langfristig festschrieb. Bis heute traten weitere 36 Staaten diesem Vertragswerk bei. Sein Konsultativstatus fordert einerseits »conduc- ting substantial research activities« und gewährt andererseits Mitsprache bei der Verabschiedung von Empfeh- lungen, Entscheidungen und Beschlüssen. Eine internationale Zusammenarbeit zur Erforschung der Arktis war während des »Kalten Krieges« aus- sichtslos. Die USA und die UdSSR standen sich in dieser Region mit ihrem Nukleararsenal direkt gegenüber. By far the best known photographers were the professionals, Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley, hired to photograph British and Australasian expeditions. But a great number of photographs were also taken on Belgian, German, Swedish, French, Norwegian and Japanese expeditions. These were taken by amateurs, sometimes designated official photographers, often scientists recording their research. Apart from a few Pole-reaching images from the Norwegian expedition, these lesser known expedition photographers and their work seldom feature in the scholarly literature on the Heroic Era, but they, too, have their importance. They played a vital role in the growing understanding and advancement of Antarctic science; they provided visual evidence of their nation’s determination to penetrate the polar unknown; and they played a formative role in public perceptions of Antarctic geopolitics.

GeoJournal of Tourism and Geosites, 33(4spl), 1520–1526. https://doi.org/10.30892/gtg.334spl11-602 Abstract: According to some specialists, Antarctic tourism is one of the best-managed tourism sectors in the world. It has dynamically developed in recent decades. Starting the second half of the eighties of the twentieth century, tourist figures in Antarctica grew exponentially from several hundred to 74 thousand annually. The seasonal and spatial restrictions mark its specific nature. The author believes in the need for comprehensive control of tourist activity and behaviour on the continent. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IATTO) promotes safe and environmentally responsible voyages to Antarctica. Education is vital during these visits, providing an opportunity to become acquainted with this exceptional continent and its merit for world science. Tourists, representing over 100 nationalities, become the ambassadors of Antarctica on returning home. Study results indicate that immoderate development of Antarctic tourism may generate threats and the introduction of related restrictions. The name itself conjures up visions of mountains with flowing glaciers, menacing seas sprinkled with icebergs and animals not to be met elsewhere.
