Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Dated: 3 Abstract This thesis articulates the resonances between J. M. Coetzee's lifelong engagement with mathematics and his practice as a novelist, critic, and poet. Though the critical discourse surrounding Coetzee's literary work continues to flourish, and though the basic details of his background in mathematics are now widely acknowledged, his inheritance from that background has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive and mathematically- literate account. In providing such an account, I propose that these two strands of his intellectual trajectory not only developed in parallel, but together engendered several of the characteristic qualities of his finest work. The structure of the thesis is essentially thematic, but is also broadly chronological. Chapter 1 focuses on Coetzee's poetry, charting the increasing involvement of mathematical concepts and methods in his practice and poetics between 1958 and 1979. Chapter 2 situates his master's thesis alongside archival materials from the early stages of his academic career, and thus traces the development of his philosophical interest in the migration of quantificatory metaphors into other conceptual domains. Concentrating on his doctoral thesis and a series of contemporaneous reviews, essays, and lecture notes, Chapter 3 details the calculated ambivalence with which he therein articulates, adopts, and challenges various statistical methods designed to disclose objective truth. -

Pin- 431512 [email protected] ================================================================== Abstract John Galsworthy was an English playwright of 20th century. Alike G. B. Shaw he used drama as a vehicle for assigning communal criticism in each of his plays, he uncovered some social illness or other. John Galsworthy’s conception of drama is grounded on realism and general sense of morals. He supposed that drama is a noteworthy art form and capable of inspiring the attention and conveying consciousness of honorable ideologies in human life. Being a law graduate he was conscious of the severe restriction of a legalistic approach to men and matters. Galsworthy also becomes victim of rigid law and rigid society, since he was not married to his lover, Ada. In Justice he exposes all evil of the society like rigid divorce law, rigidity of society, solitary confinement and injustice done to prisoner. Galsworthy presented it by using naturalistic technique. Therefore, basic aim of this paper is to study the ills of English society which caused the demise of the main character Falder. Like Bernard Shaw and his forerunner Ibsen, Galsworthy also presented some boiling problems or other in all his plays. -

The Moral Basis of Family Relationships in the plays of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries: a Study in Renaissance Ideas. A submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy by Stephen David Collins. The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved. -

He was born Jeno Waldhorn Gassner on January 30, 1903, in Máramarossziget, Hungary, and his family emigrated to the United States in 1911. He showed an early interest in theatre, appearing in a school production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in 1915. Gassner attended Dewitt Clinton High School in New York City and was a supporter of socialism during this era. -

Kovil, Trichy [email protected] ABSTRACT John Galsworthy is a British playwright committed to writing with reformist zeal. His plays are known as ‘problem plays’ discussing his contemporary social issues and anticipating possible solutions from his audience. His social consciousness and protesting attitude towards the evils prevailing in his time have made him an artist with profound humanity and his critical attitude towards intolerance, ignorance, hypocrisy, tyranny, superstition, and all the rest of the social disparities in his plays confirm his stand as a moral artist with humanistic concerns. Hence, this paper attempts to trace the humanistic concerns in Galsworthy’s Justice. In this play, his attack is directed on the unjust law of the English penal system and inhumane treatment of the prison towards a convict. His objective outlook and impartial treatment of the problem give us the undistorted outlook of the elemental fault ingrained in the legal system. He also enlightens his audience of the then cruel practice of solitary confinement and its subsequent consequences in a pictorial manner. This paper focuses on his humanistic belief that man is inherently good but the social institutions have often victimized man and hinders his survival and progress. -

His plays have unique social implications. His very themes are family relationships, social injustice, social deterioration, caste feeling with morality and tragedy of idealism. This paper is an attempt to show social injustice in the select plays of Galsworthy. We will discuss three plays which brought the social injustice before us. They are “The Silver Box”, “The Show” and “The Forest”. In “The Silver Box” we find the mechanical, almost unconscious favoring of the rich at the expense of the poor in a court of law. “The Show” demonstrates how acute may be the suffering and wrong inflicted on private individuals through the needless gratifying of public curiosity by means of Press and other ways. “The Forest” is about the Pounce of nature, and the ways in which that pounce may still persist in what we call civilization, illustrated by an exposure of some of the methods by which extensive swindling may take place in the regions of high finance. ABSTRACT That Conrad was familiar with Schopenhauer’s philosophy has been proposed by literary scholars and seconded, in passing, by philosophers. This has resulted in one-way studies of literary influence. This thesis is instead a two-way study in the philosophy of literature. It shows how Schopenhauer’s philosophy can illuminate Conrad’s fiction and how the fiction can become an analytical tool for exploring the philosophy. There are two strands in Schopenhauer’s philosophy. One is uncompromisingly concerned with salvation and will-denial. The second focuses on self- knowledge and character, which leads to self-fulfilment and accommodation with the world. It is the latter strand, with character at its core, where the interests of the philosopher and creative writer coincide. My methodology is different from previous studies in that I propose Conrad’s direct source for Schopenhauer was not The World as Will and Idea but his essays, which are directed more towards the worldly strand of his philosophy. -

Appendix: Statistics Concerning Printings of Galsworthy's Novels in Britain, Germany, Austria and France UNITED KINGDOM Mr Charles Pick, Managing Director, William Heinemann, and Mr R. Davies, Sales Manager, Penguin Books, provided the following information and figures. It is quite astonishing to note the number of copies of Galsworthy novels printed in recent years, compared with similar figures for other contemporary writers. On 11 November 1970, Mr Pick wrote: We have always had The Forsyte Saga, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter (the Forsyte trilogies) in print. Up to the time of the first showing of the TV series we were selling a steady 2,000/2,500 copies a year of the Forsyte Saga. Since 1 January 1967 we have sold 107,000 copies and 42,000 copies of A Modern Comedy and 28,000 copies of End of the Chapter. In addition Penguin have sold 1.8 million copies of the nine individual titles (we did not give them the trilogy rights). As a result of the increase in the reading of the Forsyte Chronicles, we have now put back into print as single volumes the following titles: Beyond, The Country House, The Dark Flower, Fraternity, The Island Pharisees, The Man of Property and Saint's Progress.
