Sonnenberg Thesis Advisor Golden, Colorado Date:_______________ Signed:____________________________________ Dr. Paul Santi Professor and Head Department of Geology and Geological Engineering ii ABSTRACT Wattenberg Field has been a prolific producer of oil and gas since the 1970s, and a resurgence of activity in recent years in the Niobrara Formation has created the need for a detailed study of this area. This study focuses on mapping regional trends in stratigraphy, structure, and well log properties using digital well logs, 3D seismic data, and core X-ray diffraction data. Across Wattenberg, the Niobrara is divided into the Smoky Hill Member (made up of A Chalk, A Marl, B Chalk, B Marl, C Chalk, C Marl, and Basal Chalk/Marl) and the Fort Hays Limestone Member. Directly beneath the Niobrara, the Codell Sandstone is the uppermost part of the Carlile Formation. Stratigraphic trends in these units are primarily due to differential compaction and compensational sedimentation. The largest structural trend is a paleo-high that runs east-west to northeast-southwest across the middle of the field. It has a relief of about 100 ft, and is 20 mi wide. The A Chalk and A Marl show evidence of submarine erosion over this area. Faults mapped from 3D seismic data are consistent with previously published data on a proposed polygonal fault system in the Denver Basin. -

Palaeont. Polonica, 43,107- 140. Fossiliferous marine strata of the Janusfjellet Formation (Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous) are describ- ed from Myklegardfjellet, Agardhbukta area, east Spitsbergen. The invertebrate fauna collected by the first author from these beds in 1977 has been determined by the second author (serpulids, bivalves, belemnites) and by the third author (ammonites). This assemblage allows to distinguish the Upper Callovian, the Kirnrneridgian (Lower and Upper) and the Lower Volgian stages in the lower part of the Janusfjellet Formation (Agardhfjellet Member). The upper part of the Janusfjellet Formation (Rurikfjellet Member) yielded poorly preserved fossils of little stratigraphic value. As such it liesnear the southeastern margin ofthe Colorado Plateau. The regionaldip in the study area is very gently northeastward toward the Gallup Sag which comprises thenortheastern part of the Basin. There are, however, broad, gentle NW-SE trending folds which result in local southwestward dips, and at least twoabrupt monoclinal flexures, up on the northeastside, (opposed to regional dip) that clearly define the NW-SE structural grain of the area, as well as minor faulting. These structural trends parallel the axis of the Zuni Uplift, but perhaps more importantly they appear to represent the southeastward extension of the structural axes that wrap aroundthe southern end of the Defiance Uplift, as shown by Davis andKiven (1975), and theyalso align very well with the northwest-trendingdike system in the Fence Lake (the Dyke quadrangle),Techado, Adams Diggings,and Pietown areas. Of the three structural features mentioned - broadfolds, monoclines and faulting - monoclinesare the most pronounced and significantnot only locally, but in a much broadercontext. -

Koevoets): [email protected] We describe the invertebrate assemblages in the Middle Jurassic to lowermost Cretaceous of the Agardhfjellet Formation present in the DH2 rock-core material of Central Spitsbergen (Svalbard). Previous studies of the Agardhfjellet Formation do not accurately reflect the distribution of invertebrates throughout the unit as they were limited to sampling discontinuous intervals at outcrop. The rock-core material shows the benthic bivalve fauna to reflect dysoxic, but not anoxic environments for the Oxfordian–Lower Kimmeridgian interval with sporadic monospecific assemblages of epifaunal bivalves, and more favourable conditions in the Volgian, with major increases in abundance and diversity of Hartwellia sp. assemblages. Overall, the new information from cores shows that abundance, diversity and stratigraphic continuity of the fossil record in the Upper Jurassic of Spitsbergen are considerably higher than indicated in outcrop studies. The inferred life positions and feeding habits of the benthic fauna refine our understanding of the depositional environments of the Agardhfjellet Formation. The pattern of occurrence of the bivalve genera is correlated with published studies of Arctic localities in East Greenland and northern Siberia and shows similarities in palaeoecology with the former but not the latter.
