Coach Harold Nichols, Gillum (kneeling), Sebert (capt.), NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WINNERS: Left to right front mw-Mike Camcso (Lehigh) gong (Iowa State), Uetake (Oklahoma State), Stuart ilehigh), Hatta (Oklahoma state): back row-Kopnisky (Maryland), Ruth (Oklahoma), Peckham (Iowa State), Brisco (Okla- homa State), Nance (Syracuse). National Collegiate Championships By BILL YOUNG Sports lnformafion Director, University of Wyoming Iowa State's Cyclones lurked in the wings until the finale, and then upstaged Oklahoma State's defending National Collegiate wrestling champions, 87-86, in the 35th National Collegiate Championships held at the University of Wyoming. Lehigh was a distant third with 45 points, followed by Oklahoma with 44, Michigan, 39, and Arizona State, 30. Trailing the Cowboys by 22 points, 66-44, going into the final day of com- petition, Iowa State piled up 43 points, mostly in the consolation bracket, to win the title in one of the most thrilling finishes in the history of the event. The Cyclones' 87 points tied the record set by 0-State in 1964 and the Cowboys' 86 was a new high for a runner-up. The Iowa State triumph also marked the first time the wrestling crown left the state of Oklahoma in a dozen years. Not since Penn State upset the Sooners in 1953 had the title gone to anyone but an Oklahoma school. 0-State had won 24 of the previous 34 cham- pionships and was shooting for its second straight and fourth in the last five years. Coach Myron Roderick sent five of his Cowpokes into the championship finals. Iowa State's Harold Nichols could claim only two finalists. But both Iowans, Very1 Long at 147 and Tom Peckham at 177, won. These two titles along with five third place finishes and one fourth was enough to fashion the upset. Long's come-from-behind win over Gettysburg's Joe Bavaro seemed to be the turning point for Iowa State. Trailing by two points with 12 seconds to go in the bout, Long slipped a reversal to send the contest into overtime. The extra period ended in a scoreless deadlock and the referee's decision, only the second in the tournament, went to Long, who had finished fourth in the 1964 meet, and Iowa State led Oklahoma State for the first time, 84-82. The only match where the Big Eight cousins met head-on was at the climactic 177-pound division where Peckham and Cowboy Bill Harlow re-played their con- ference scene. Peckham exploded Poke hopes by whipping Harlow, 5-3, reversing the outcome of their league title bout to run the score to 87-82. Cowboy Jack Brisco sent Oklahoma State hopes soarlng as he pinned Dan Pernat of Wisconsin in 6:32 of the 191-pound match, picking up four points and sending the count to its final 87-86 reading. Big Jim Nance of Syracuse clinched it for Iowa State as he won his second National Collegiate heavyweight title, decisioning Oklahoma State's Russ Winer in the final match of the tournament. Other winners were Tadaaki Hatta, Oklahoma State, 115; Mike Caruso, Lehigh, 123; Yojiro Uetake, Oklahoma State, 130; Bill Stuart, Lehigh, 137; Bob Kopnisky, Maryland, 157; and Greg Ruth, Oklahoma, 167. Uetake, the only defending champion to repeat, was named the outstanding wrestler in the tournament. Arizona State's 177-pounder Charles Tribble, placing third, earned the Gorriaran Award for the most falls in the least time wlth three pins in 4:28. The tournament, second to be hosted by.Wyoming since 1958, attracted 227 wrestlers from 64 schools in 24 states. The championship finals drew a crowd of 5,247 and total attendance for the three days was 14,486. For the third straight year ABC-TV taped the championship finals for its Wide World of Sports Program. Dick Voliva of Rutgers was elected president of the NCAA Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, succeeding Sam Barnes of North Carolina. Marv Hess of Utah was named president-elect; Ted Bredehoft of Arizona State was re- elected secretary-treasurer and Doug Parker of Springfield was re-elected membership secretary. 11 INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS AND PLACE WINNERS Class Champion Runner-up Third Fourth Fifth Sixth 115-ZB.. .Hatta McMinn Gillum Warnke Winfelder Garcia (Okla. Maintenance of muscle strength and mass as aging occurs will greatly improve these functions and promote independent living and longevity. It is well known that men and women are not comparable in strength or absolute muscle mass after adolescence. In adulthood, when strength is expressed relative to mass, the disparity tends to be smaller, therefore, the primary aim of this study was to identify sex-related differences in muscle quality, defined as the upper and lower body strength relative to muscle mass of the upper and lower body, respectively, in older men and women. METHODS: Seventeen men [mean ą SD: age (years): 69.1 ą 6.6; height (cm): 177.4 ą 7.5; weight (kg): 84.0 ą 14.5] and 17 age-matched women [age (years): 68.9 ą 6.4; height (cm): 159.4 ą 7.9; weight (kg): 71.0 ą 12.8] completed maximal bench press and leg press to assess strength and underwent a full-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan to quantify arm lean mass and leg lean mass.

  • Making Indigenous Water Worlds: Settler Colonialism
(Re)Making Indigenous Water Worlds: Settler Colonialism, Indigenous Rights, and Hydrosocial Relations in the Settler Nation State by Shaun A. Stevenson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Language and Literature Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018, Shaun A. Stevenson Abstract This dissertation examines several sites of conflict between Indigenous and non- Indigenous peoples over water and water rights in Canada, from the 19th century up to current articulations of environmental policy and land rights. Through examination of a selection of public policy, land rights decisions, grassroots activism, and Canadian and Indigenous fiction and non-fiction, I probe relationships to water that have structured and limited the legibility of Indigenous rights in Canada. I track a history of settler colonialism through the lens of water, querying whether water offers a productive site that might challenge the current land-based constraints of colonial legal and policy frameworks that have led to what are often irreconcilable relationships between the settler state and Indigenous peoples. Through Indigenous legal orders, social, cultural, and political expression, as well as strands of materialist and environmentalist Western philosophy that focus on water, ontology, and narrative, I explore the limits and potential for decolonial approaches to water governance that might better support the inherent rights of Indigenous peoples. Using an interdisciplinary methodology, I read public policy and land rights decisions in dialogue with settler and Indigenous literatures and community action in order to understand the often-competing worlding practices that materially, socially, subjectively, and figuratively construct settler and Indigenous approaches to water—what I am calling settler and Indigenous water worlds.

THE SHOOT: WRESTLING’S REALITY ON THE INDEPENDENT SCENE Chris Saunders A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Adviser: Prof. Jan Yopp Reader: Dr. Barbara Friedman Reader: Dr. Elizabeth Hedgpeth © 2010 Chris Saunders ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CHRIS SAUNDERS: The Shoot: Wrestling’s Reality on the Independent Scene (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Barbara Friedman, and Elizabeth Hedgpeth) Over the last ten years, professional wrestling has become more corporate and monopolized. World Wrestling Entertainment is the only major promotion with a few promotions, such as Total Nonstop Action, trying to compete. As a result, those major promotions have changed who they target from traditional wrestling fans to the mainstream population at large. Wrestling purists scoff at the programming they see those promotions produce on television. The alternative for the old-school, dedicated wrestling fan is the independent circuit. The three articles that follow work to illustrate the lives lived, the dreams fulfilled and the hopes broken on wrestling’s indy scene. The first article serves as an overview by featuring both wrestlers and fans in a gimmick- based promotion in Raleigh, North Carolina. The second article profiles a wrestling promoter and discusses the financial burdens one undertakes to run a promotion full-time. The final article describes the role wrestling schools play in the independent world and features a former superstar who has turned teacher.
