CRANFORD, NEW JERSEY FOREWORD "No more pencils, no more books, No more teachers' dirty looks!" How many times have we jeeringly chanted that little ditty as we ran out of grade-school on the last day of those spring semesters? This time it holds: We're all fin- ished. Our days of flower-bringing have long since passed and now even these four years are over. We can fling our books and papers from us as we move into or against our several worlds of tomorrow. And yet we do it none too willingly, but rather with a wistful look backward—backwards on friends across the aisle, assignments finished and forgotten, morning detentions, cheer- ing the Blue and Gold, attending the Junior- Senior Prom. S, 19 3 9 Page Thirty-six CLASS HISTORY And now, children, for today's history lesson, we will consider the rise of a valiant little empire, the Kingdom of Seniors. Only four short years ago, in 1935, a group of small, but sturdy men and women (freshmen, shall we say?), stormed the fortress of Cleveland High, and only by fighting courageously were they able to gain access to the classrooms past the lines of sneering Upperclassmen, who, clad in the armor of superior years, more knowledge, (and less intelligence) were nearly able to blockade the school. Nevertheless, these '39ers struggled in, and soon made their place among those larger, more powerful nations, the Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Although disorganized during the first year of their existence, the '39ers showed their mettle in various school activities and seemed to be bound together by a common lack of, shall we say, inhibitions, and a growing desire for self-determination. As the second year got under way, with a determined gleam in their eyes the '39ers elected an executive body with that pillar of wisdom, Brewster Porcella, at its head. Being a democracy, his title was President, and giving moral support were the other officers, Miriam Graff as vice-president, Marjone Schults as secretary, and Olive Douglas as treasurer. As Prime Minister {adviser in the colloquial) was Miss Pray, the lovely scion of the French department. The first state ball was given late in the year, a barn dance, and a great success, with dignitaries and socialites of the school environs attending. Inaugurating Roy Daniels (the working-man's choice) as President, the third year was begun. Margaret Diradourian was yes-man, Miriam Graff traded her last year's position to become secretary, leaving Bill Plummer holding the bag (of money). General Oliver L. West took over as Prime Minister with the loss of Miss Pray as .1 member of the faculty. Among state functions, given with much pomp and splendor, were the Junior Sub, the Junior-Senior Prom, and a super-spectacular recording dance. Finally achieving a Senior Empire by strife, revolution, and hard work, Bob Sterrctt, (chosen by a feminine majority) was elected by enthusiastic citizen voters to uphold the traditions of democracy and neutrality. His assistants wore all new to politics, but proved capable in their positions. Halina Tomczyk was vice-president, Elaine Shire kept the minutes, and Harlon Drew performed the duties of Chancellor of the Exchequer. A play, "One Sunday Afternoon," was presented by senior thespians for the amusement of the nation's theater-goers, (and the benefit of depleted state coffers). Class night and commencement followed hard on the heels of other activities including a Senior Dance, and the career of the Nation of the '39ers was already dreary history, to be written in the tomes of the sages and read by wise men. This class had its demise on June 22, 1939, due to a fatal case of double knowledgitis. This disease had been contracted while the members of the class were exposed to certain advanced types of learning in Cranford's progressive high school. Only by cutting two-thirds of their classes were the students able to ward off its ravages until they had completed their required four or five years. No sooner had they dr.iwn up their last will and testament than they succumbed to the dreaded malady. Surviving are the undistinguished members of the Junior Class, all other undergraduates, and the members of an exhausted faculty. Miss Tansey assisted Miss Abrams with the latter group. The usual activities: Thanksgiving food collection, the hat check concession, distri- bution of magazines, a Bonnie Burn's party and book collection, the social welfare work and the afternoon dance were carried out. The publication again attained the position of second in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Standards. It was Friday, March 31st or Saturday, April 1st, and the play was One Sunday Afternoon, the engaging little 1800's comedy by James Hagan, which the senior class presented under the competent direction of Miss Mathews. The cast seemed to be admirably suited to their individual roles, and along with capable, hard-working crews, cooperated in making the presentation a dramatic and financial success. In the assemblies, besides presenting the band, orchestra, and chorus, the organiza- tion made possible the appearance of Vincent Mott, champion American Legion drum- mer, and Harold Stanbaugh, former Sousa Band cornetist. The orchestra and chorus, with Leo Panasewitz as violin soloist, gave a concert on Friday, February 24. The band, as well as playing at our football and basketball games, gave a concert at which Arthur Pryor, famous bandmaster, was guest conductor. The group also was honored by being one of the few high school bands invited to play at the New York World's Fair. The members have made museum specimens, studied rodents, germination of plants, and have experimented with gardens. CLEMENT NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society is to develop in the students the qualities of character, service, leadership, and scholarship. The members are selected as being outstanding in possessing these traits. The keystone and the flaming torch compose the emblems of the society and the initials stand for its four qualifications. The members are chosen from the first quarter of the Junior and Senior classes. Ten per cent of the Seniors and five per cent of the Juniors are eligible. First, there were the thrilling interclass basketball games packed with the proverbial "thrills and spills." These battles were watched by screaming seniors, gyrating juniors, and even some solemn sophomores. They were refcreed by "we girls," ourselves, and this alone provided hilarity galore. The girls undoubtedly can be accused of making up rules of their own, and also of gaily breaking the ones which were pounded into their little heads by Mrs. Breck. Tirst, last, and always on the program were exercises. The sight of stooping, creak- ing, and groaning girls making their laborious way through the halls and, worse yet, up the stairs were pitiful testimony of this fact. The more stiff and sore we became, the more we heard, "it shows you need it, girls!" this from our merciless instructor, Mrs. Breck. It is certain, however, that some of our hips and waistlines did profit from these tortures and so we will not complain. Volley ball came in and was all the style for some time, with more inter-class battling. Badminton was a favorite with many of the girls and in one tournament even the boys joined in. The "weaker sex" certainly was weaker when it came to competing against the boys. The girls of '3 9 could probably stage a very satisfactory parade with all the knowl- edge of marching they have. The sight of "Sergeant" Breck barking out commands and the girls in orderly (?) lines marching briskly around the gym is one which not many will forget. This marching and exercising was done in order to get us in shape for th tourna- ments which were constantly being held. The winning team in the inter-class basketball tournament was captained by Betty Scarbrough. The girls' hockey schedule is not yet completed. Page Si\ty-cigbt FOOTBALL TEAM Coach J. S. Winning three out of eight hard games, they outplayed and outfought seven teams above their class. Dropping three hard-fought games to East Orange, Dover, and Roselle; the Blue and Gold, led by Capt R. Kelsey, downed Bernardsvillc and Railway. Bill Plummer Having plenty of ice this winter, the Cranford Hockey team commenced to show its appreciation by running up one of its best records in years. With Capt. Bill Plummer commanding, they crashed through their season with seven victories, one tie, and one defeat. After playing eight games without a defeat, and running up five straight wins, the Blue and Gold Pucksters bowed to powerful Hun School. As this occurred in early spring during which Cranford had no time to practice, this defeat is not felt much by the sextet for they have outscored their opponents this year, 2S-15. Muldrow, and Lansing to carry the squad. They will be supported by Roode, Avery, Tweed, Bartels, and several others.
