Welsh is the main language used within this school. The school adheres to Gwynedd’s Language Policy in supplying information bilingually.

Welsh is the main language of learning in the Foundation Phase. Units of English work are introduced in Year 2.

Welsh is the main teaching language in Key Stage 2. English is introduced as a subject as well as a medium for teaching Foundation subjects.

8. CLASSES

Classes in the Foundation Phase are taught in year groups. At times the Nursery and Reception classes are amalgamated due to numbers. Key Stage 2 pupils are taught in year groups apart from three afternoons when they are taught in three group – Yr 3/ 4 , Yr 4/5, Yr 5/6 for Music and Physical Education.

9. BUILDINGS

• Some tiles in the Main Corridor were replaced. • Fire doors were repaired in the Therapy Unit. • Part of the roof in the Old School was repaired • Manhole covers were painted with anti slip paint. • New rain water troughs were installed (voluntary work by Mulcair) • Holes in the concrete ramp by the school hall were repaired. • Outside lighting was repaired after storm damage. • Gardening shed was repaired after storm damage. • Old toilet, sink and water tank were removed from the Old School. • Electrical cables/copper repaired and replaced following vandalism. • Facia boards replaced around the building • Asbestos was removed from the kitchen ceiling. • A new roof was erected on the school building. • New skylights were fitted to the school roof. • Doors to the hall store room were painted.

10. ADDITIONAL LEARNING NEEDS (SEN)

The school implements a policy on Additional Learning Needs. It can be discussed with the co- ordinator. The ALN co-ordinator is Mair Hughes Jones.

The curricular sub-committee members responsible for SEN are Dr Edwin Williams and Mrs Nia Parry Jones.

The Code of Practice has been followed through providing individualized plans for every child on the ALN register. Parents are given opportunities to discuss their child’s development during the year.

The school strictly adheres to an Equal Opportunities Policy. Children are supported by specific Support Staff and / or by voluntary work by Mrs. Lesley Jones. Reading was supported in Year 1 by Mrs. Julie Morris and by Mrs. Mair Jones in Year 3

10. DISABLED PUPILS

The entrances to the Uned Gwyrfai/ Foundation Phase/ Junior departments are suitable for disabled pupils. Toilets – Accessible, safe and clean toilets are available in the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2. Toilets with disabled access are available as well as a therapy suite.

11. INSET

Meetings were held regularly on Tuesday afternoon to discuss diverse educational fields.

Teachers and Support Staff attended a large number of courses that were compatible with the School’s Development Plan’s priorities and their own professional development. Staff were involved with several Learning communities.

12. CHWARAEON

There is a specific structure in place regarding Physical Education arrangements. Pupils in the Foundation Phase receive weekly P.E. sessions to develop skills and fitness and a taster sessions at swimming.

Pupils in the Key Stage 2 department have the opportunity to have swimming lessons at the Leisure Centre as well as participating in various activities such as rugby, football, hockey, netbwll, water skills, swimming, athletics, gymnastics and dance.

K.S 2 co-ordinator Siân Pritchard is responsible for organizing the after school’s Dragon’s Sports Club programme. The rugby training was provided by Mr. Dewi Jones

K.S.2. pupils take part in a variety of sporting competitions.

13. SCHOOL COUNCIL

• A new School Council was elected (Yr.2 – Yr. 6) • Several meetings were held during the year. • A Mexican, Italian and Chinese Day was arranged • Friendship Buddies were established • A timetable for the laptops was arranged. • New equipment was bought for playtime. • Priority was given to the ‘C’ factor

14. THE ARTS

• Congratulations to Deio, Ynyr and the Ensemble on their performance in the Eryri National Urdd Eisteddfod. • Congratulations to the Band on their success in the Eryri Urdd National Eisteddfod • Congratulations to the girls who performed in the Disco Dancing in the Eryri Urdd National Eisteddfod. • Several succeeded in the Arts and Crafft at the Urdd this year with many items receving an award at National level. • Several pupils took part in the Childrens Pagent.

• Congratulations to Cara on being chosen for the North Womens Football team. • Congratulations to Mared on her place in the North Wales Gymastic team. • Congratulations to Ynyr on his place in the British Orchestra.

15. CYSYLLTIADAU Â’R GYMUNED

A great emphasis is given at this to working with the community. Every effort is made to lead and support community activities. • Parents of Year 4 were invited to the Thanksgiving service and parents of Year 3 to the St. David’s Day service. • Clwb Gwyrfai were also invited to both these service. • Pupils from Y S H O, Brynrefail, Dyffryn and Friars on Work Experience • Community support was received for the School Garden Project • The school contributed towards Bontnewydd Village Eisteddfod. • The Nursery teacher visited the Nursery School • Pupils celebrated two weeks of ‘Fair Trade’ • The School Band contributed to several concerts. • The school contributed to several items at ‘Hwyl y Bont’ • Christmas and St. Davids Day concert were held. • An afternoon of workshops to celebrate the Olympic Flame. • Parents and friends were invited to an Alfresco Evening – Buffet and a chat

16. COLLECTIONS TOWARD CHARITIES

• Sponsorship of a Child in Uganda • 8 Goats were bought for Africa – ‘Fill a Welly’ Appeal • 93 boxes were collected for ‘Operation Christmas Child’ • £172 was collected for Children in Need • Money was collected for the Poppy Appeal.
