  • Case in the Qurˀānic Consonantal Text
Case in the Qurˀānic Consonantal Text By MARIJN VAN PUTTEN (Leiden University) and PHILLIP W. STOKES (University of Tennessee) Abstract The nature of the language underlying the Qurˀānic Consonantal Text (QCT) has been a topic of scholarly discussion for well over a hundred years. The traditional position is that this language was essentially identical to that of the pre-Islamic poetry. The mismatch between the language of the reading traditions and the orthography has normally been explained as the result of orthographic conventions such as ‘pausal spelling’. A minority of scholars have challenged this view, suggesting instead that the Qurˀān was originally delivered in a local dialect and only subsequently brought in line with Classical Arabic. Neither permutation of these two positions has been based on the one part of the Qurˀānic text that can, with certainty, be dated back to the early Islamic period, the Qurˀānic Con- sonantal Text. This paper examines the nominal case system of Qurˀānic Arabic. Instead of relying on traditions that developed a century or more after the original composition of the Qurˀān, we rely primarily on the QCT itself, paying special attention to implications of internal rhyme schemata, as well as patterns in the orthography. We will show, based on internal data supported by, but not dependent upon, the orthography that the language behind the QCT possessed a functional but reduced case system, in which cases marked by long vowels were retained, whereas those marked by short vowels were mostly lost. A place where the short case vowel appear to have been retained is in construct.

  • Language in Ancient Syria-Palestine and Arabia: an Introduction Roger D
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-68498-9 - The Ancient Languages of Syria-Palestine and Arabia Edited by Roger D. Woodard Excerpt More information chapter 1 Language in Ancient Syria-Palestine and Arabia: an introduction roger d. woodard Pedra It seems no work of man’s creative hand, By labor wrought as wavering fancy plann’d, But fromthe rock as by magic grown, Eternal, silent, beautiful, alone! Not virgin-white like the old Doric shrine Where erst Athena held her rites divine; Not saintly-grey, like many a minster fane, That crowns the hill, and consecrates the plain; But rosy-red as if the blush of dawn That first beheld themwere not yet withdrawn; Thehuesofyouthuponabrowofwoe, Which man deemed old two thousand years ago. Match me such marvel save in Eastern clime, A rose-red city half as old as Time. John WilliamBurgon Often rehearsed, sometimes parodied, there remains something hauntingly arresting about John WilliamBurgon’s sonnet in praise of Petra, Jordon’s “rose-red city,” lying at the thresh- old of the Arabian Peninsula, on the southeastern fringe of ancient Syria-Palestine (the term is used herein to denote the region encompassing the modern political states of Jordon, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria; on the notion of “Syria-Palestine,” a geographic construct popularized by W. F. Albright, see Dever 1997). Now home to a Bedouin community, Petra was once the thriving capital city of the ancient Nabataeans, whose kingdomflourished in the late cen- turies BC and the early centuries AD. Arid Petra’s prosperity flowed not only fromthe desert caravans that passed through the city, located at the nexus of intersecting trade routes, but fromits abundant water supply, captured by an elaborate systemof Nabataean-engineered ducts, dams, and cisterns.

  • Arabic Linguistics a Historiographic Overview
ROCZNIK ORIENTALISTYCZNY, T. LXV, Z. 2, 2012, (s. 21–47) EDWARD LIPIŃSKI Arabic Linguistics A Historiographic Overview Abstract The study of Arabic language seems to have started under the driving need to establish a correct reading and interpretation of the Qur’ān. Notwithstanding the opinions of some writers about its origins one should stress that the script and spelling of the Holy Writ derives directly from the Nabataean cursive. Aramaic Nabataean script was used to write Old Arabian since the first century A.D., also at Taymā’ and Madā’in Ṣaliḥ, in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Variant readings and divergent interpretations of Qur’ānic sentences, based on ancient Arabic dialects, are not expected to disturb the Arabic grammatical tradition, which was possibly influenced to some extent by Indian theories and Aristotelian concepts. It served as foundation to modern European studies and was then expanded to Middle Arabic, written mainly by Jews and Christians, and to the numerous modern dialects. From the mid-19th century onwards, attention was given also to pre-classical North-Arabian, attested by Ṣafaitic, Ṯamūdic, Liḥyanite, and Ḥasaean inscriptions, without forgetting the North-Arabian background and the loanwords of Nabataean Aramaic, as well as the dialectal information from the 7th–8th centuries, preserved in Arabic sources. Keywords: Arabic language, Linguistics, Grammar, Qur’ān, North-Arabian The study of Semitic grammar, either Arabic, Syriac or Hebrew, started under the driving need to establish a correct reading and a proper interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, the Qur’ān and the Bible, both in their formal and semantic dimensions.

  • A Newly Discovered Letter of the Early Arabic Alphabet: a Distinction Between Final Jīm and Final Ḥāʾ/Khāʾ and Its Nabataean Origins*
A Newly Discovered Letter of the Early Arabic Alphabet: A Distinction between Final Jīm and Final Ḥāʾ/Khāʾ and Its Nabataean Origins* MARIJN VAN PUTTEN Leiden University ([email protected]) Abstract This paper studies the letter shape of the finaljīm , ḥāʾ, and khāʾ in seven early Quranic manuscripts. Examination of the shape of these letters in these manuscripts reveals a graphemic distinction between the jīm, which lacks the typical curved tail, and the ḥāʾ and the khāʾ, which do have this tail. This distinction is lost in later Quranic manuscripts. I argue that the distinction between jīm and ḥāʾ/khāʾ is a continuation from the Arabic script’s origins in the Nabataean Aramaic script, which had distinct letter shapes for these signs. Contrary to what has been previously thought, the evidence adduced in this article shows that the merger happened in the Islamic period rather than in the pre-Islamic period. Introduction The Arabic script as we know it today can be thought of as an “archigraphemic” system, in which one letter shape may stand for a variety of different signs.1 In a nonfinal position, for example, the single denticle may stand for bāʾ, tāʾ, thāʾ, nūn, or yāʾ depending on its dotting, though in a final position the nūn and the yāʾ are distinct. In early manuscripts, where the dots are very often not marked, these signs are fully homographic. Traditionally, the jīm, the ḥāʾ, and the khāʾ have been considered to have a single archigraphemic representation as well. For example, in undotted script zawj ‘spouse’ and rūḥ ‘spirit’ are completely homographic: * I thank May Shaddel, Fokelien Kootstra, and Benjamin Suchard for providing important feedback on an early draft of this article.

  • Lexical Loans in Early Syriac: a Comparison with Nabataean Aramaic
LEXICAL LOANS IN EARLY SYRIAC: A COMPARISON WITH NABATAEAN ARAMAIC John F. Healey Of all the Semitic languages Aramaic has the longest history and this fact alone makes it particularly interesting and rich from a lexical point of view1. Throughout this long history Aramaic has been pre-eminently a language in contact with other lan guages — Akkadian, Hebrew and Phoenician, Iranian languages, Egyptian, Greek, Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish2. The political side of this coin is the fact that the Ara maeans and other speakers of Aramaic never, or hardly ever, constituted a domina ting force. The speakers of Aramaic have spent almost all their history under foreign domination of one kind or another, though the impact that Aramaic has itself had on the languages of the rulers is considerable, partly because of the particular roles, ad ministrative and intellectual, that the Aramaeans have tended to have within the domi nant culture. Within the continuum of Aramaic itself, Syriac is worthy of special attention. As a dialect, it is a direct heir of the Achaemenid Aramaic tradition3, but its formation as a distinctive branch of Aramaic and its linguistic and literary development took place under Greek, Iranian and Arab influences4. Its lexica reflect this, just as its later history down to the present century in the Tur cAbdin reflects later influences, espe cially Kurdish and Turkish5. Within the 2,000-year history of Syriac itself, the earliest inscriptions are particu larly interesting for the following reasons: (i) They contain very clear evidence of the formation of classical Syriac6; (ii) The corpus is small and therefore easy to survey exhaustively7; Beyer, Aramaic, gives a bibliographical survey.

  • Artikel an Explanation of the Etymology of the Name Ammon In
Artikel An Explanation of the Etymology of the Name Ammon in Genesis 19, Based on Evidence from Nabataean Aramaic and the Safaitic Arabian Dialect Elitzur Avraham Bar-Asher (Harvard University)* In Genesis 19:36–38 we encounter the story of Lot and his two daughters as an etymology for the names of the two regional nations: Ammon and Moab (Moab).1 According to this story, these names originated with the names of the two boys who were products of an incestuous relationship between Lot and his two daughters. The narrator tells us that their mothers named them Moab and Ben-‘ammi. However, explanations for their naming are missing in the Biblical story. Ancient interpreters,2 as well as modern ones, have attempted to draw a connection between the daughters’ deeds and the names they gave to their sons. The name Moab was probably regarded as a folk etymology in which the element ’ab was understood as ‘father’ and, therefore, the first element was interpreted as a variation of the preposition m/min ‘from.’ The combination was consequently regarded as ‘from a father,’ signifying that the mother wanted to indicate that she had conceived with her own father. It should be noted that some scholars have suggested that this ‘interpretation’ is stronger than it first appears. If the first element of the name was taken as the preposition ‘m/min,’ which expresses ‘the origin,’ we would have expected that the name would have been Me’-b due to the Aleph at the beginning of the word. However, if this is the case, the name Mo’-b can be explained as a variant of the * I wish to thank Prof.

  • New Evidence for the History of Indigenous Aramaic Christianity in Southern Jordan
New Evidence for the History of Indigenous Aramaic Christianity in Southern Jordan W. J. Jobling • Pre-Islamic Southern Jordan has for some time been a much neglected Aramaic-speaking domain in the history of the spread of the early Christian movement as it emerged from its Judaic origins. This is in spite of the large Byzantine site of Khirbet Humayma at the northern end of the Hisma and the sites in and around the Wadi Ramm, Petra and the copper-rich Wadi Araba. Now recent excavations of a large tripartite basilica which was discovered at Petra in 1990 and the discovery in its environs of ancient scrolls in December, 1993, have revived interest in the episcopal sees of Palestina Tertia, or Third Palestine, and the history of their origins and development.l Prior to tf1is new evidence it was widely held that after the Roman annexation of Petra in I 06 A.D. there was a gradual decline in the area generally and a move of socio-economic interests to Bosra which is situated to just south of the Hauran in southern Syria. A Greek inscription dated to 446 A.D. in the Urn Tomb at Petra indicated that this Nabataean structure had been converted into a church, and crosses engraved on the walls of the Deir which looks west across the Wadi Araba from just below Aaron's Tomb were thought to denote the consecration of the lofty Deir for Christian worship. Backtracking through the early Patristic sources it can be seen that Petra became the seat of a bishopric in the fourth century and was later elevated to that of a metropolitan see.
