Bardzo cieszy mnie fakt, że grono doktorów honoris causa naszej Uczelni systematycznie się powiększa. Świadczy to o naszej otwartości i szeroko zakrojonej sieci kontaktów naukowych nie tylko w kraju, ale też za granicą. Są oni naszą wizytówką, ambasadorami, którzy rozsła- wiają markę naszej Uczelni. Zasłu- żyli na to. prof. dr hab. Marek Ziętek Rektor Stanisław Kulczyński urodził się w Krakowie 9 maja 1895 r., studiował zoologię i botanikę na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Studia botaniczne uzu- pełnił w Wiedniu. W latach: 1918–1919 asystent, 1919–1924 adiunkt Ogrodu Botanicznego Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 1924–1941 profesor Katedry Morfologii i Sys- tematyki Roślin Uniwersytetu Lwowskiego, 1945–1962 profesor Katedry Morfologii i Systematyki Roślin Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego. Jednocześnie w latach 1945–1951 rektor Uniwersytetu i Politechniki we Wrocławiu. Autor lub współautor ponad 60 prac naukowych, głównie z zakresu paleo botaniki, morfologii i systematyki roślin, torfoznawstwa oraz ochrony przyrody, a także około 100 publikacji na tematy społeczno-polityczne. Członek Towarzystwa Naukowego we Lwowie, współzałożyciel i prezes Wrocławskiego Towarzystwa Naukowego, członek korespondent (1935) i członek czynny (1945) PAU, członek rzeczywisty PAN (1952). Członek Klubu Demokratycznego we Lwowie (1938–1941), członek (1945), przewodniczący (1956–1959) i przewodniczący honorowy (1969–1975) Rady Naczelnej Stronnictwa Demokratycznego, poseł do KRN i Sejmu (1946–1972), zastępca przewodniczącego Rady Państwa (1956–1969). Laureat nagrody naukowej miasta Wrocławia, doktor honoris causa Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego i Politechniki Wrocławskiej. W latach 1911–1914 studiował medycynę w Paryżu, w latach 1915–1922 odbył stu- dia matematyczne na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, 1922–1924 asystent, 1924–1939 docent II Katedry Matematyki Uniwersytetu Warszawskie- go, 1939–1941 profesor Katedry Geometrii Uniwersytetu Lwowskiego, 1945–1963 profesor Katedry Geometrii Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego. Jednocześnie od 1952 r. profesor Instytutu Matematycznego PAN. Autor ponad 50 prac naukowych, głównie z topologii metrycznej, topo- logii ogólnej, teorii mnogości.     Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism.

The 14th Dalai Lama and the Japanese Buddhists An Account and Analysis of Complicated Interactions Introduction On April 18, 2008, Buddhist priests of ZenkØ-ji in Nagano reversed their initial decision to offer their temple as starting point for the Japan torch relay in preparation of the Olympic games in Beijing. This was eight days before the event was scheduled to take place. The priests provided two reasons for their refusal: On the one hand, previous disruptions of the torch relay and demonstrations in other countries caused safety concerns for ZenkØ-ji’s believers and its “cultural assets.” On the other hand, referring to the protests in Tibet in March 2008, they stated: “We were concerned about the crackdown on Buddhists in Tibet who rose up.” And: “Indiscriminate killings were undertaken in Tibet.” (JT April 19, 2008) Previously, the temple had received about 100 phone calls mostly in protest against the original plan. Subsequently, however, in the night from April 19 to 20, vandals retaliated and sprayed graffiti on the wooden walls of the 1.400 years old temple, a national treasure. (JT April 21, 2008) This episode indicates a conflict between Japanese Buddhist loyalties towards their Tibetan brothers and sisters on the one hand and the present political relationship between Japan and China on the other. In modern times, the Buddhist connection between Japan and Tibet reaches back to the Meiji Period when monks such as Kawaguchi Ekai (1866-1945) and Teramoto Enga (1872-1940), in “search for the dharma,” undertook dangerous trips to Tibet in order to acquire “authentic” Buddhist sutras.1 Study of these old texts played an important role in the vigorous endeavor in Japanese “Modern Buddhism” (kindai bukkyØ) to define its identity in times of radical changes in the social, political and religious environment brought about by severe criticism and persecution during the Meiji revolution.

Objective of the mission The objective of this mission of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) was to better understand the ongoing reforms of the Polish justice system as carried out by the Polish authorities, their objectives and their impact on the rule of law situation in Poland, within the framework of the Article 7(1) TEU procedure activated by the European Commission on 20 December 2017 in relation to the rule of law situation in Poland. For this purpose, the delegation met with representatives of the Polish Government, the Sejm and the Senate, political parties, judicial institutions, representatives of the OSCE/ODIHR, legal practitioners, journalists and representatives of civil society.
