ATHENIANS AND ELEUSINIANS IN THE WEST PEDIMENT OF THE PARTHENON (PLATE 95) T HE IDENTIFICATION of the figuresin the west pedimentof the Parthenonhas long been problematic.I The evidencereadily enables us to reconstructthe composition of the pedimentand to identify its central figures.The subsidiaryfigures, however, are rath- er more difficult to interpret. I propose that those on the left side of the pediment may be identifiedas membersof the Athenian royal family, associatedwith the goddessAthena, and those on the right as membersof the Eleusinian royal family, associatedwith the god Posei- don. This alignment reflects the strife of the two gods on a heroic level, by referringto the legendary war between Athens and Eleusis. The recognition of the disjunctionbetween Athenians and Eleusinians and of parallelism and contrastbetween individualsand groups of figures on the pedimentpermits the identificationof each figure. The referenceto Eleusis in the pediment,moreover, indicates the importanceof that city and its majorcult, the Eleu- sinian Mysteries, to the Athenians. The referencereflects the developmentand exploitation of Athenian control of the Mysteries during the Archaic and Classical periods. In the time-period between 700 and 300 BCE, this was often true for the women of the world, but there was one major exception: Spartan women. In most other parts of ancient Greece, women were expected to be seen and not heard. Spartan women, however, were allowed much more freedom than their contemporaries. They were allowed to own property, could live independently, and were not forced into marriage and motherhood at a young age. -

In the English text, short indented lines have been included with short lines above them in computing the appropriate line number. The stage directions and footnotes have been provided by the translator. In this translation, possessives of words ending in -s are usually indicated in the common way (that is, by adding -’s (e.g. Zeus and Zeus’s). This convention adds a syllable to the spoken word (the sound -iz). Sometimes, for metrical reasons, this English text indicates such possession in an alternate manner, with a simple apostrophe. This form of the possessive does not add an extra syllable to the spoken name (e.g., Hercules and Hercules’ are both three-syllable words; whereas, Hercules’s has four syllables). Indeed, there has been explicit and vocal policy activism since the end of the dictatorship in the mid-1970s to redress some of the most salient aspects of gender discrimination in the legal framework and gender gaps in economic outcomes, with a focus on employment. It is useful to situate the gender trends in the context of three distinct periods. In the first phase, from WW2 to 1980, Greece was a more-or-less successful developing economy, trying to qualify for what was then the European Community. This was the time of the explicit “male-breadwinner model”. Very few women were in employment – just three out of ten – and of those who were working, one out of three had the status of “unpaid family member”. The context was one of fast growth, a large primary sector, big and closely knit families, urbanization and fluid borders between the family firm/farm and the family. -

Di Yan November 12, 2018 III Abstract This thesis, with its reflections on previous myth theories, especially structuralism in the 20th century and post-structuralist readings in recent decades, suggests a new approach for understanding GreeK mythology. TaKing Athenian autochthony as a case study, it argues that, instead of regarding GreeK myth as either a narrative system with one universal logic (structuralist reading) or as an ever-changing corpus without a unified concern (post-structuralist reading), it is more plausible to understand various myths as a dynamic system of social conversation, where individual authors and different genres respond to, argue with, or even compete against one another concerning core issues for a compelling explanation and understanding of the world.
