GENERAL NOTES

Even with the increasing internationalisation of the film business, the US remains the market by which the success or failure of a European film is judged: if it doesn’t make some impact in America, it remains a local success. This is problematic for producers of European movies made in a language other than English, since the US is a market with a strong degree of resistance to foreign-language titles, particularly subtitled ones, and has proved especially difficult for German films of late.

In the six years covered by these surveys, German-produced, English-language films like THE LAST STATION, THE INTERNATIONAL, PANDORUM, THE FUTURE, A DANGEROUS METHOD, THREE MUSKETEERS, CLOUD ATLAS and RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION have been the strongest performers, and only two non-English-language German films – Michael Haneke’s DAS WEISSE BAND and ’ PINA – have crossed the all-important $1-million mark at the US box office since 2008 (Haneke’s AMOUR took over $6 million, but that was a majority French co-production), and only 10 of the remaining 33 solo German films or majority co-productions grossed over $100,000, with several failing to reach even the $10,000 threshold.

The total gross for German-language films (not including minority co-productions) on the US market from 2008-2013 was around $10 million, with two films – DAS WEISSE BAND and AUF DER ANDEREN SEITE – accounting for almost half that total. Results vary from year to year: 2011 was good, with German films taking $30 million at the box office ($20 million of that coming from THE THREE MUSKETEERS). But 2012 and

MARKET STUDY USA, APRIL 2014, BY SPLIT SCREEN FOR GERMAN FILMS

2013 were disappointing, with English-language films topping the chart, and German-language films grossing just under $400,000 between them, again with one title – GERHARD RICHTER - PAINTING – accounting for almost all the revenue.

Box office apart, German films do seem to have a regular toe-hold on the American market and, with festival and special-event promotion, should manage to maintain a profile, as well as providing German actors and directors with the time-honoured chance of being talent-spotted for Hollywood studio movies.

The emergence of VOD as a viable – if not the dominant – release platform for arthouse movies does not look likely to change this in the immediate future, since currently only the most obviously commercial English-language titles are being offered on the main platforms. The number of titles available on DVD remains, meanwhile, far greater than those offered on VOD platforms. And, as this market is eroded by the success of VOD, so too in all probability will the number of available German titles decline. The aggregation of films onto free advertising- supported VOD sites is unlikely to be a serious revenue stream for German producers, and the current transition period could be tough for German producers and sales agents. On the foreign-language scene at present, only high-profile Cannes titles seem guaranteed a US release. And there have been precious few of those emanating from Germany in recent years.
