Honorable Finalist, Level I Grace Sugaski Letter to author “Erin Hunter” (authors Victoria Holmes, Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, Gillian Philip, Inbali Iserles, Tui T. Sutherland, and Rosie Best) concerning Bluestar’s Prophecy Dear “Erin Hunter:” In your book Bluestar’s Prophecy, I knew right away, when Bluestar’s character was introduced, that she was a noble and fair leader. She offered Rusty a place in her clan because of her shortage of warriors. I thought that was a very wise decision. I always wished I could be as calm and wise as Bluestar. Little did I know about her sad and troubled past. As I read your book, I felt like I could relate to her character as she was growing up. Bluestar’s Prophecy reminded me of the quote “Be kind, for everyone is fighting their own battles.” I try to be more patient, which all of the Warriors books have reminded me, as I face my own battles. I lost my mom in 2013. I blamed myself because I thought I could have said goodbye or visited her one more time. I felt lonely. I am an only child, and my dad has since remarried. A lot of times, to this day, I feel lonely, and that my family doesn’t love me very much. I am not used to the treatment that is much less gentle than what I received from my mother. This is kind of like how Bluestar’s father never paid her and her sister much attention. It is miraculous how well Bluestar turned out as a warrior and as a character.

  • Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No
For Exhibitors September 21, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 135 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising We celebrate the remarkable career of actress Frances McDormand, who has delighted audiences for 35 years with her portrayals of strong-willed and colorful heroines. Her debut to feature film was in 1984 in Blood Simple, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Joel and Frances met in 1983 during her audition for the film, became a couple and married the next year. McDormand also starred in the Coen Brothers’ comedies Raising Arizona (1987) and Fargo (1996), in which she played a very pregnant detective, Marge Gunderson, with an unforgettable Norwegian-American accent. McDormand has earned critical acclaim throughout her long and prolific career for her performances in film and television and on stage. In fact, she is one of only 24 actors to have won Academy, Emmy and Tony Blood Simple Awards, a feat known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Her most recent role is in Chole Zhao’s Nomadland, about a (1984) woman in her 60’s who sets off in a van to wander through the American West, a modern-day nomad. The film and McDormand’s performance have emerged as darlings of the 2020 International Film Festival circuit. Nomadland is being distributed by Searchlight Pictures and opens in theatres nationwide on 12/2. “I'm a character actress, plain and simple...Who can worry about a career? Have a life. Movie stars have careers - actors work, and then they don't work, and then they work again.” – Frances McDormand Three Billboards

  • DISNEYLAND Grand Opening on 7/17/1955 the Happiest Place on Earth Wasn't Anything of the Sort for 13 Months of Pandemic Closure
Monday, July 19, 2021 | No. 177 Film Flashback…DISNEYLAND Grand Opening on 7/17/1955 The Happiest Place on Earth wasn't anything of the sort for 13 months of pandemic closure. But, happily, Disneyland began coming back to life in late April and by June 15 wasn't facing any capacity restrictions. Now it's celebrating the 66th anniversary of its Grand Opening July 17, 1955. To help finance Disneyland's construction in Anaheim, Calif., which began July 16, 1954, Walt Disney struck a deal with the then fledgling ABC-TV Network to produce the legendary DISNEYLAND series. For helping Walt raise the $17M he needed -- about $135M today -- ABC also got the right to broadcast the opening day events. Originally, July 17 was just an International Press Preview and July 18 was to be the official launch. But July 17's been remembered over the years as the Big Day thanks to ABC's live coverage -- despite things not having gone well with the show hosted by Walt's Hollywood pals Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings & Ronald Reagan. Live TV was in its infancy then and the miles of camera cables it used had people tripping all over the park. In Frontierland, a camera caught Cummings kissing a dancer. Walt was reading a plaque in Tomorrowland on camera when a technician started talking to him, causing Walt to stop and start again from the beginning. Over in Fantasyland, Linkletter sent the coverage back to Cummings on a pirate ship, but Bob wasn't ready, so he sent it right back to Art, who no longer had his microphone.

  • Victoria Holmes Cherith Baldry
As you may have heard, Erin Hunter is actually six people! She is experienced children’s book writers Victoria Holmes, Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, Tui Sutherland, Gillian Philip and Inbali Iserles. Victoria Holmes I grew up on a farm and love all animals, including cats, but most especially dogs and horses. This comes in very handy when I need to send cats to a sticky end—I'd have a lot more trouble killing off a dog or a horse! I love being one of the Erins, and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could. We each have our favorite characters and ideas for what could happen next, which means the stories have three times as much energy and passion Cherith Baldry I grew up on a farm, so of course I grew up with cats—working cats who kept down the mice in the house and barns, but were still friendly house cats who would play and curl up on a lap. My first cat after I married was a grey tabby called Tomlyn. We acquired him while we were out in Africa, teaching at the University of Sierra Leone. He was part Siamese, part African bush cat, and one of the friendliest cats I've ever known. When we came back to the UK we brought him with us; although he had to stay in quarantine for six months, he didn't forget us, and when we went to visit him he climbed all over us, shedding hair and purring like mad! My next cat was called Schrodinger, after the Austrian physicist—my husband Peter was a scientist.

Many of the films listed were made in a time when filmmakers had to refrain from including curse words, exploitive sexuality or desensitizing violence. To younger members of the family, that means, these films are old! Understandably, a younger generation will not relate to styles and mannerisms of a time gone by, but here is something to keep in mind. Though haircuts change and clothing tightens, people all desire to be warm, to be fed, to be loved, to be respected, etc. In other words, we share a commonality with those of all generations. We’re really not all that different from one another. The following movies will entertain because they contain the most special special effect of all: great storytelling.
