Kids Korner . . . . is doing the right thing even when you don’t feel like Self-Control ... it. There are lots of these de- cisions we have to make eve- ry day: Should I talk back to my mom? Should I yell at my brother? Should I eat ten cookies? Should I put aside time to pray to God? This last one is a good place to start learning self-control. Ask your parents for a children’s prayer book, and say a few simple prayers at the same time eve- ry day. Another good thing to do is to follow the fasting calendar of the Church.

The Gospel of St. Luke 12: 16 - 21

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 “And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18”So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and goods. 19 ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whore will those things be which you have provided?’ 21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

12”16-21 The rich man is a fool, despite his material success, because he vainly puts all his trust in his posses- sions rather than in God. To be rich toward God (v.21) is to have a life of close communion with Him through faith and works.

For Consideration

If human philosophy can content a man, why did the philosophers Justin and Origen become Christians? Why did Basil and Chrysostom and Gregory, who had in Athens studied Hellenic philosophy in its fullness, receive baptism? And Blessed Augustine, who was familiar with Hellenic and Roman wisdom - why did he set side everything and seek salvation and light in the Christian faith? And St. Clement of Rome, who was very rich and very learned? And St. Catherine, who was of the royal house and learned in all the secular knowledge of Egypt? And Joasaph, the heir of India, who was versed in the whole of Indian philosophy? And so many, many others who first sought an explanation for the enigmas of the world and light for their souls in philosophy, and then drew near to the Church and came to worship Christ the Lord.
