The original terms of reference from the Department of Conservation stated that the bibliography should deal with flora and fauna values and pest man- agement in the park. The scope has been somewhat broadened to encompass ecological values and management in the broadest sense, including descrip- tive material, research papers, forest history, management plans and the resto- ration of forest condition and wildlife following direct or indirect human im- pact (especially from the introduction of browsing animals and predators). The period covered is 1950-1999. Pureora (State) Forest Park was formed in 1978 after a New Zealand Forest Service seminar held in Taupo to consider management proposals for the Rangitoto/Hauhungaroa Ranges.

Once mining commenced in California in 1849 and Australia in the early 1850s, many Maori participated on several fields, especially in Victoria. When gold was first discovered in New Zealand, at Coromandel in 1852, Maori were keen to learn prospecting skills, and soon found gold in several parts of both the North and South Islands. Some alluvial claims were worked communally, even some women participating. From the start, Maori were determined to protect their rights against Pakeha when they were rivals for the same ground. On the Hauraki Peninsula, which had no alluvial gold, Maori were prospectors rather than miners. Some were successful, often going against the wishes of rangatira who, fearing that opening goldfields would result in their losing their land, refused access to prospectors, particularly in Ohinemuri. At Thames, Maori prospectors succeeded where Pakeha ones had failed, finding the gold that led to the 1867 rush; a rush encouraged by one rangatira in particular, Wirope Hoterene Taipari, who understood how a successful field would benefit him financially (including obtaining a reward for discovering a payable goldfield).

Of the 20 wild animal species found on the central North Island Volcanic Plateau, most attention has been given to browsing animals but 'the impact of most mammals is only slowly becoming known'. Little is known of some species, e.g., feral pig. Small mammals have hitherto received little attention (but see 3 papers by King et al. 1996 for studies at Pureora). Whilst this pamphlet refers mainly to a study of kokako in Rotoehu pine plantations there are observations and conclusions that can be extended to Pureora. Kokako move, sing and feed freely in pine plantations rather than reside or breed there. Fast growing pines may be the quickest way (within 15 years) to establish forest corridors between isolated native forest blocks and help protect the bird's future survival.

    WAIPA CATCHMENT PLAN ACTIONS FOR IMPLEMENTATION 2014/15 About this document In 2014/15, the Waikato River Authority is giving increased priority to projects that support the implementation of the Waipa Catchment Plan. This document lists actions that parties can undertake to support the implementation of the Waipa Catchment Plan in 2014/15. The actions are grouped into: • soil conservation • cultural and community • sustainable land management • maintaining/improving water quality • protecting/restoring indigenous biodiversity. About the Waipa Catchment Plan The Waipa Catchment Plan sets a 20 year plan to support the restoration and protection of the health and wellbeing of the Waipa River (and the Waikato River). The Waipa Catchment Plan is currently being finalised and is expected to be released in October 2014. The Waipa Catchment Plan has been developed: • in collaboration with the Waipa Zone Liaison Subcommittee and representatives of Waikato-Tainui Te Kauhanganui Incorporated, Maniapoto Māori Trust Board, Raukawa Charitable Trust, Ngati Mahanga and Ngati Koroki Kahukura • with co-funding from the Waikato River Authority. Roach The yellow-brown loams are to the dairy industry in the North Island what the Draughtmg: C.B. l>owell clover plant is to New Zealand's pastoral farming. Today, these soils also form the basis of our kiwifruit industry in the Bay of Plenty and of a host of new horticultural enterprises in addition to traditional market gardening uses, such as in south Auckland and Ohakune. Yellow-brown loams occupy about 1.5 million ha or about 15% of the North Island. They are one of the major natural resources of New Zealand and increasingly they will become a cornerstone of our food production industry and export earnings. In this, the sixth volume of Soil Groups of New Zealand, the New Zealand Society of Soil Science has attempted to draw attention to the uniqueness of the yellow-brown loams and the special properties which they display. This volume comes at a time when global interest in such groups of soils is widespread and This volume has been compiled from both published readily complements the recently published book "Soils with Variable Charge", and unpublished information.
