Through the Arch 2020 GREETINGS from the HEAD of SCHOOL Through The Arch 2020 GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL These pages tell the story of the second year of our young school’s history. The themes that emerge ring true with our school’s mission and speak to a profound sense of community that is characterized by kindness and inclusion. Reflecting on the 2019-2020 academic year brings to mind so many good memories of the special events and emerging traditions our community has celebrated here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Forest City International School. The range of activities and clubs at SSM-FC is constantly growing as new ideas and innovations come to light. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every student and teacher who has demonstrated the courage and commitment to bring forth new ideas for clubs, sports, and activities for the community. It’s not just innovative leadership that makes our community work so well, but our school thrives on the energy and enthusiasm that every member of every group brings to each and every meeting, match, or event. While individuals may originate ideas, it is the work of teams and committees that make things happen! I am personally grateful to every student, teacher, staff member and parent for joining the school community and making Shattuck-St. Mary’s Forest City a success. Thank you as well to the Yearbook Team for your effort to make this annual publication come together. Thank you for helping everyone to remember what an inspiring, resilient, and terrific school community we have built together! Gregg Maloberti. Our early learning community has more than doubled since our first year. Our teachers are building this community by writing Learning Stories with parents that focus on helping our students develop awareness of their strengths. Whether they are expressing themselves through art or music, in their home language or in English, the children are finding different ways to represent their growing understanding. They are developing skills that will last a lifetime, like learning to swim. Our teachers have helped the students gain confidence in their abilities and belief in their capacity to solve and address real world problems, whether that be turning off the faucet with a paper towel after washing their hands or logging on to the computer for a sing-a-long with their classroom community. Dr. Nathan Johnston Our students know that they are part of a community that includes their families, other families, and teachers. They are part of a community where people care about each other and help each other learn no matter what happens. It has been my pleasure this year to watch our students grow, and gain confidence in their abilities. I can’t wait to see what they will do next. WAYNE FROM THE BURNETT ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL Dear Students, Dear Parents, Dear Colleagues, Our second year of operation has been an exciting, unexpected, learning adventure. We started off the year with many new colleagues and students. Extending to five separate homerooms for five grades was an achievement and I was super impressed by the learning I saw in each class. We also added teachers in Music (Ms. Esther), Visual Art (Ms. Khai Ling) and Physical Education (Mr. Vince), so that we shared those teachers with Early Childhood only. This meant we had much more and Chi Lǎoshī. Further creativity and personal involvement from those teachers in our work and I development were developed by Ms. Kimber, know students were impressed by the teachers we Ms. Lianne and Ms. Li Teen. had. This all changed when COVID became an issue Sadly, we said goodbye to Ms. G, Stefanie Goebel, in and we transitioned to Home Learning. Well, it the middle of the first semester. A real child at heart, changed and it did not, because with the Ms G was remarkable for her playfulness, excellent work of teachers and the strong relationships with students, and her hard work, support of parents, learning continued. Perhaps from helping students individually to exhibiting that was the greatest achievement of the year - student artwork in the Forest City Hotel. our ability to overcome challenges - learning in English and learning at home - and succeed. The beginning of the year is always a challenge when it comes to playing and studying in English at This is my last year at Shattuck-St. Mary’s school. But, around Chinese New Year, this year like Forest City. I know I leave the school in good last year, I noticed a shift in the ability and hands, supported by my AA Ms. Chin, the folks willingness of students to use English much of the in the Administration Department, and my day. No doubt the work of the EAL teachers, Ms. Jay fellow senior leaders. My best wishes to and Ms. Heidi, were key to that. But, of course, we everyone in the SSMFC community. don’t only teach English. Learning Math, Science & Engineering, and Community & Cultural Studies Sincerely, were all supported by Mrs. Netter, Ms. Conley, Mr. M-O, Mrs. C, and Mr. Netter, along with our terrific Teaching and Learning Assistants (TLAs), Ms. Elaine, Ms. Jia, and Ms. Eunice.

  • Warriors As the Feminised Other
Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

BRENDA LEE by Tamela Meredith Partridge “Herald & Review” newspaper Decatur, IL. © 2003 Country Music Hall Of Famer, Brenda Lee, will bring her vibrant vocals to Nashville North USA on Saturday, November 20 at 5 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $23.50 and avail- able through the Nashville North USA box office or by calling 287-2103. Country and pop star Brenda Lee has been rockin’ music fans around the world for over four decades with such chart- topping hits as,“Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” “I’m Sorry,” “The Crying Game,” “Nobody Wins” and “Big Four Poster Bed.” “I loved every song I ever recorded,” Brenda Lee said during a recent phone interview. “If I had not, I could not have sung them.” The songstress was born Brenda Mae Tarpley, the second of four children to parents Ruben and Grayce, in a Atlanta, Georgia hospital charity ward. Destined to sing her way out of an impoverished childhood, the young vocalist was first introduced to the music business at age five when she won first place at a local talent show with a touching rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” Her father, a carpenter and semi-professional baseball player, was killed in a construc- tion accident when Brenda was only eight years old. In order to support the family, her mother went to work in a cotton mill while Brenda began singing to supplement the family income. Launching her professional singing career at age eleven on entertainer Red Foley’s popular weekly television show, “Ozark Jubilee,” provided a recording contract and financial relief for the struggling family.

  • Whiteness, Femininity, Adolescence and Class in 1960S Music
Laurie Stras, ed. 2010. She's So Fine: Reflections on Whiteness, Femininity, Adolescence and Class in 1960s Music. Surrey, UK, and Burlington, VT: Ashgate Publishing. Reviewed by Sayo Yamagata Laurie Stras's edited volume She's So Fine: Reflections on Whiteness, Femininity, Adolescence and Class in 1960s Music is a welcome addition to the recent scholarship on music by female musicians of the 1960s that attends to the complexity of the women and girls who performed and listened to this music in the United States and the United Kingdom. So unexplored is this area of inquiry from a musicological standpoint that, in her introduc tion, Stras appropriately envisions She's So Fine to be the "beginning of a re-evaluation-with emphasis on value-of the very premises of 1950s and 1960s pop" (23). By extension, Stras's ambitions for the book not only necessitate an interrogation of the merits of the popular music canon, but also call for a reconsideration of the standard criteria for assigning and naturalizing value wherever it calcifies. The pop music of women musicians in the 1960s has, critically and in general popular thought, been denigrated for its polish and mass appeal. Celebrated volumes on rock history such as The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll, (2001) or Robert Palmer's Rock and Roll: An Unruly History (1995) have participated in the dismissal of girl groups by credit ing their success to the complex labor force of producers and song-writers "behind" the musicians. Stras observes that "Pop and its attendant girl space, with their alleged emphasis on conformity and concomitant lack of authenticity, have been noted as a phenomenon, but one that always seems to operate as a foil to prove rock's ultimate superior cultural worth" (22).
