Through the Arch 2020 GREETINGS from the HEAD of SCHOOL

Through The Arch 2020 GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL These pages tell the story of the second year of our young school’s history. The themes that emerge ring true with our school’s mission and speak to a profound sense of community that is characterized by kindness and inclusion. Reflecting on the 2019-2020 academic year brings to mind so many good memories of the special events and emerging traditions our community has celebrated here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Forest City International School. The range of activities and clubs at SSM-FC is constantly growing as new ideas and innovations come to light. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every student and teacher who has demonstrated the courage and commitment to bring forth new ideas for clubs, sports, and activities for the community. It’s not just innovative leadership that makes our community work so well, but our school thrives on the energy and enthusiasm that every member of every group brings to each and every meeting, match, or event. While individuals may originate ideas, it is the work of teams and committees that make things happen! I am personally grateful to every student, teacher, staff member and parent for joining the school community and making Shattuck-St. Mary’s Forest City a success. Thank you as well to the Yearbook Team for your effort to make this annual publication come together. Thank you for helping everyone to remember what an inspiring, resilient, and terrific school community we have built together! Gregg Maloberti. Our early learning community has more than doubled since our first year. Our teachers are building this community by writing Learning Stories with parents that focus on helping our students develop awareness of their strengths. Whether they are expressing themselves through art or music, in their home language or in English, the children are finding different ways to represent their growing understanding. They are developing skills that will last a lifetime, like learning to swim. Our teachers have helped the students gain confidence in their abilities and belief in their capacity to solve and address real world problems, whether that be turning off the faucet with a paper towel after washing their hands or logging on to the computer for a sing-a-long with their classroom community. Dr. Nathan Johnston Our students know that they are part of a community that includes their families, other families, and teachers. They are part of a community where people care about each other and help each other learn no matter what happens. It has been my pleasure this year to watch our students grow, and gain confidence in their abilities. I can’t wait to see what they will do next. Sincerely, Dr. Nathan Johnston Early Childhood School Principal KINDERGARTEN 3 Homeroom Teacher: Ms. Stephanie Spiller Teaching and Learning Assistant: Ms. Adele Ng KINDERGARTEN 3 Du You Yi (Yomy) Elisa Lani Efthymiou Pirtam Kanagasaba Liu Yi Peng Ning Xi Yue Qiu Yi Wang Jia Lin (Ruth) Xue Yi Shuo (Brady) Not Pictured: Ma Jun Zhe (Morris) Zhang Xin Yue (Elina) Zhang Yi Lin (Andy) Zhu Jun Xi (Rick) KINDERGARTEN 4 Homeroom Teacher: Mrs. Miel Sadhwani Teaching and Learning Assistant: Ms. Vicky Chai KINDERGARTEN 4 Chen Jinxuan (Jane) Chi Yi Tong Cui Ding Sheng Ge Yu Guo (Hugo) Yoon Tae Young (Taron) Not Pictured: ZiXin Zhao ART ATTACK! WAYNE FROM THE BURNETT ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL Dear Students, Dear Parents, Dear Colleagues, Our second year of operation has been an exciting, unexpected, learning adventure. We started off the year with many new colleagues and students. Extending to five separate homerooms for five grades was an achievement and I was super impressed by the learning I saw in each class. We also added teachers in Music (Ms. Esther), Visual Art (Ms. Khai Ling) and Physical Education (Mr. Vince), so that we shared those teachers with Early Childhood only. This meant we had much more and Chi Lǎoshī. Further creativity and personal involvement from those teachers in our work and I development were developed by Ms. Kimber, know students were impressed by the teachers we Ms. Lianne and Ms. Li Teen. had. This all changed when COVID became an issue Sadly, we said goodbye to Ms. G, Stefanie Goebel, in and we transitioned to Home Learning. Well, it the middle of the first semester. A real child at heart, changed and it did not, because with the Ms G was remarkable for her playfulness, excellent work of teachers and the strong relationships with students, and her hard work, support of parents, learning continued. Perhaps from helping students individually to exhibiting that was the greatest achievement of the year - student artwork in the Forest City Hotel. our ability to overcome challenges - learning in English and learning at home - and succeed. The beginning of the year is always a challenge when it comes to playing and studying in English at This is my last year at Shattuck-St. Mary’s school. But, around Chinese New Year, this year like Forest City. I know I leave the school in good last year, I noticed a shift in the ability and hands, supported by my AA Ms. Chin, the folks willingness of students to use English much of the in the Administration Department, and my day. No doubt the work of the EAL teachers, Ms. Jay fellow senior leaders. My best wishes to and Ms. Heidi, were key to that. But, of course, we everyone in the SSMFC community. don’t only teach English. Learning Math, Science & Engineering, and Community & Cultural Studies Sincerely, were all supported by Mrs. Netter, Ms. Conley, Mr. M-O, Mrs. C, and Mr. Netter, along with our terrific Teaching and Learning Assistants (TLAs), Ms. Elaine, Ms. Jia, and Ms. Eunice.
